You don’t have to live withpainful varicose and spider veins.Should I Have My Veins Evaluated?Q & A WITH A VEIN SPECIALIST: While finishing charts at theend of my day, I took a few moments to listen to my staff answerquestions for a patient on the phone. The questions asked were veryimportant as were the answers that were given. Here are someexamples:
What is Phlebology?Phlebology is the branch of medicine that deals with veins and the
disease of veins. Two organizations dedicated to the advancement ofthis field are The American College of Phlebology and the AmericanVenous Forum.
Why should I see a board- certified phlebologist to evaluate my varicose veins
When it comes to any aspect of your health care, it is important tobe proactive in the choice and research of who will become medicallyresponsible for your evaluation and treatment. Though venousdisease is not always a visible ailment, it can be a serious healthproblem leading to more serious issues, so choosing a specialist, orboard certified phlebologist for your venous care is a wise decision.
Board certification in phlebology identifies a physician who hastaken the extra step of becoming specialized in the treatment ofvenous disease. Not only is the physician often a member oforganizations such as the American College of Phlebology (ACP) andthe American Venous Forum (AVF) but they have met additionalrequirements set by the certifying board. After meeting theserequirements, he or she must then pass a certifying exam allowing thephysician to identify him or herself as board-certified.
Is membership the same as board certification? This question is particularly important as it defines the specialty of
a phlebologist. While a physician may be a member of many differentorganizations, these organizations only require an interest in the fieldfor joining. Thus membership is unlike board certification wherequalification is determined through training and testing. Here’s howthe ACP defines its board certification: “The establishment of a BoardCertification Exam brings recognition to both the field of phlebologyand those providers in the field who have the knowledge, skills andexperience to provide quality care to phlebology patients.”
I had a free screening at ahealth fair and was told thatI don't have venous disease, but I still have aching, painand discoloration at theankles. What should I do?
While free screenings can beinformative, remember that this isjust a brief glance into a patient'svenous system. A complete venousexam and venous mapping by aboard-certified phlebologist is bestto determine if a patient has venousdisease.
Since a proper venous ultrasoundis such an integral part of thisevaluation, the American College ofPhlebology has set requirements for itthat include the following:• A venous ultrasound should be ordered by a
physician.• A lower extremity ultrasound should study the entire leg, from ankle
to groin. Failure to identify and treat all sources of reflux may resultin outright treatment failure.
• Evaluation of the venous system should be performed with the patientin the upright position. Sitting or lying down are inappropriate forthe detection of reflux or the measurement of vein diameters.
• A venous ultrasound should be performed by a trained physician or aregistered vascular ultrasound technician (RVT) and theninterpreted by a physician.
If I have had an evaluation elsewhere, can I still be evaluated in your office?
Of course. A free evaluation is commonly ‘ free’ because patientsare often not meeting with a physician, a physician assistant or a nursepractitioner, so this visit cannot be billed to insurance. However, mostinsurances allow for a second opinion. If you have any questionsabout the second opinion being covered, contact member services onthe back of your insurance card.

JOY TO THE WORLD
Joy to the World! The Lord is come;Let earth receive her King;Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room, And heav’n and nature sing,And heav’n and nature sing,And heav’n, and heav’n and nature sing.
Joy to the World! The Savior reigns;Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks,
hills and plains,Repeat the sounding joy,Repeat the sounding joy,Repeat, repeat the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace,And makes the nations proveThe glories of His righteousness,And wonders of His love,And wonders of His love,And wonders and wonders of His love.
THE FIRST NOEL
The first Noel the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in fields
as they lay;In fields where they lay keeping
their sheepOn a cold winter’s night that was so deep.Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the

In 2004, he led the Youth Symphony in a special performance at the first National Performing Arts Convention and conducted the orchestra on an interna-tional tour to Vienna, Prague, Leipzig and Bu-dapest. He also led the orchestra in the world premiere of David Stock’s Clarinet Concerto with soloist Richard Stoltzman, and conducted the premiere of a new work by John Harbison in May 2009. David Zinman awarded Meyer the pres-tigious Aspen Conducting Prize in 2002, and invited him to return as Assistant Conductor and to lead a subscription performance at the Aspen Music Festival. Committed to new music and contemporary composers, Meyer conducted several premieres at Aspen, was featured on the Adventures in Listening new music series, and has appeared on National Public Radio’s Performance Today. A native of Cleveland, Meyer is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conserva-tory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, includ-ing a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Meyer re-ceived the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award. He also studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. He is married to violist Mary Persin.

How will the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh get to Carnegie Hall in 2014? With a little help from our friends.
The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh has been invited to accompany the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to perform Manfred Honeck's dramatic presentation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem at Carnegie Hall in Spring 2014. The Choir's last performance at Carnegie Hall was almost a dozen years ago and choir members will tell you that there is nothing like the feeling of standing on that historic stage preparing to sing. To help the Mendelssohn Choir raise the funds to cover its travel costs, Mr. Richard P. Simmons has generously agreed to match every donation dollar for dollar! Make a donation to The Mendelssohn Choir's Carnegie Hall Challenge Fund and see your dollars doubled.

MENDELSSOHN CHOIR OF PITTSBURGHBecause of its many performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, many people assume that the Mendelssohn Choir of Pitts-burgh is a part of the PSO, but it is not. The Mendelssohn Choir is a separate arts organiza-tion that, at 104 years young, is Pittsburgh’s oldest continuously performing arts organiza-tion. The Mendelssohn Choir is passionate about choral music. By singing choral music at the highest level, the Choir combines the clar-ity of words with the mystical power of music so that the deepest and most universal of hu-man expressions are magnified through a com-munity of voices. As the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s “chorus of choice,” the Mendelssohn Choir has performed under the baton of some of the world’s foremost conductors including Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Michael Tilson Thomas, Claudio Ab-bado, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Slatkin, Charles Dutoit, André Previn, Sir Neville Marri-ner, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Helmuth Rilling, Ingo Metzmacher, Richard Hickox, Zdenek Mácal and Manfred Honeck. Performances of the Choir with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra are heard locally over WQED-FM (89.3) and distributed nationally by PRI. Under the direction of Betsy Burleigh, the Choir has become known for its mastery of the great choral classics. Most recently un-der her direction, the Mendelssohn Choir has performed Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning and Mozart’s Great Mass to sold-out audi-ences at East Liberty Presbyterian Church and Dr. Burleigh has led the chorus in a critically acclaimed performance of Rachmaninoff’s a cappella masterwork, the Vespers, at St. Paul Cathedral.
The Choir has numerous commissions and premieres to its credit, including works by Ned Rorem, Nancy Galbraith and Derek Bermel. A leader and collaborator in the regional arts community, the Mendelssohn’s artistic part-ners have included the Pittsburgh Opera, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the River City Brass Band, the Children’s Festival Chorus, and the Duquesne University Tamburitzans. The Men-delssohn Choir continues to garner critical accolades as it shares the joy of choral music with the more than 50,000 individuals who hear the Mendelssohn in performance each year. The more than 120 singers who comprise the Mendelssohn share a remarkable commit-ment to the art of making great choral music and collectively contribute more than 35,000 volunteer hours each year. Through its recordings and commissions of new choral works, the Mendelssohn Choir seeks to advance the choral art. The Choir’s most recent recording released in fall 2011 is Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Pitts-burgh Symphony Orchestra and the Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh with Manfred Honeck conducting. As part of its commitment to educating the next generation of choral musicians, ap-proximately 50 high school singers participate annually in the Junior Mendelssohn Program. Junior Mendelssohn alumni are to be found in concert halls and on opera stages throughout the world. The Junior Mendelssohn achieved national acclaim last year when it was honored nationally with a 2011 American Prize for best vocal performance by a high school chorus. The Mendelssohn Choir is a Steinway Artist.

BETSY BURLEIGHBetsy Burleigh, music director of the Men-delssohn Choir of Pittsburgh since 2006, was named Artistic Director of the Providence Singers (Rhode Island) in 2011 and has served as Music Director of Chorus pro Musica (Bos-ton, MA) since 2009. She has led the Mendelssohn in their own concert productions, including Brahms’ Requi-em, Bach’s B Minor Mass, and Rachmaninoff’s Vespers, in addition to preparing the choir to sing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. In 2009, she took the Mendelssohn Chamber Singers, a select sub-chorus of 32, to sing an invited performance at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. As guest conductor, Burleigh has led the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Akron Symphony, the Canton Symphony, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. Theater engage-ments have included music direction at Opera Cleveland and the Cleveland Public Theater. Also active as a clinician and festival conduc-tor, she most recently led Cincinnati’s October Festival Choir in Haydn’s Theresienmesse.
Burleigh’s conducting has been critically acclaimed; her 2012 Chorus pro Musica per-formance of Haydn’s Creation was praised in the Boston Globe as an “expansive, poetic reading,” and in the Boston Phoenix as “a stir-ring and elegant, lilting and expansive perfor-mance.” Her 2010 Chorus pro Musica rendi-tion of Orff’s Carmina burana was praised as being both “nuanced” and “hair-raising.” She won the 2000 Northern Ohio Live Achieve-ment Award for best classical/opera perfor-mance and conducted the Cleveland Or-chestra Chorus on an Emmy award-winning concert for the 9/11 Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. She has prepared choruses for Manfred Honeck, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jan Pas-cal Tortelier, Leonard Slatkin, Sir Andrew Da-vis, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Anton Coppola, Jane Glover, Jahja Ling, Nicholas McGegan, John Nelson, Yuri Temirkanov and Franz Welser-Möst, among others. Burleigh served as assistant director of choruses for The Cleveland Orchestra from 1998 until 2009, and as chorus master for Cleveland Opera from 2002-2006. From 1994-2010 she was Coordinator of Choral and Vocal Music at Cleveland State University, where she achieved the rank of full profes-sor. Her career began in Boston, where she was music director of The Master Singers, the Longy Chamber Singers, the Cambridge Mad-rigal Singers, and held teaching positions at Tufts University, Clark University and the Mas-sachusetts Institute of Technology. Burleigh earned a doctor of music degree at Indiana University, a master’s degree at the New Eng-land Conservatory of Music, and a bachelor of music education degree from Indiana Univer-sity. She is an enthusiastic grower (and con-sumer) of heirloom tomatoes.

PITTSBURGH BALLET THEATRE SCHOOLWhile the founding of Pittsburgh Ballet The-atre School pre-dates that of the company, the two were merged under the direction of Patrick Franz, PBT’s Artistic Director from 1977-1982. The Pre-Professional Division of the school experienced a surge of growth and development under the direction of Patricia Wilde, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Di-rector from 1982-1998. Today, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School (PBT School) is recognized as one of the na-tion’s finest schools for dance education and training. The School is under the direction of internationally renowned PBT Artistic Director Terrence S. Orr and School Directors Marjorie Grundvig and Dennis Marshall. PBT School offers a thorough and well-rounded dance ed-ucation for over 800 students of all ages, lev-els, and degrees of interest - taught by faculty and guest teachers of international acclaim. The School works to instill a long-term value of the art form in each student while empha-sizing the study of diverse, high quality cur-riculum in a positive and inspirational learning environment. PBT School provides classical ballet train-ing through four divisions: Children’s, Student, Pre-Professional (High School & Graduate), and Adult. The Children’s Division introduces very young children to dance through Pre-Bal-let and Beginning Ballet classes. As students move into the Student Division, they begin studying classical technique. Many students in this division have the opportunity to audition
for and perform in Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s annual presentation of The Nutcracker and other repertoire productions. The Pre-Professional Division is the key-stone of the School, training the next genera-tion of professional dancers. Admission to this program is by audition and invitation only. The Adult Division’s Open Ballet classes are offered for adults in beginning through advanced level ballet, Hip Hop, Pilates Mat classes and Private Pilates sessions are also of-fered. Each year, PBT School embarks on an au-dition tour, traveling across the United States auditioning students for a five-week Intensive Summer Program (ISP). Approximately 165 students attend the ISP program. From this group, select students are invited to attend the Pre-Professional program each year. The School’s modern and air-conditioned facility is conveniently located in Pittsburgh’s famed Strip District, just 1.5 miles from the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. It features five spacious studios with new sprung Harlequin floors. Free parking is available. Live music ac-companies most classes.

In addition to income from the Annual Fund, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is dependent on a ro-
bust endowment to assure its financial stability. Gifts from Legacy of Excellence programs are directed to
the endowment to provide for the PSO’s future. The Steinberg Society honors donors who have advised
the PSO in writing that they have made a provision for the orchestra through their estate plans. Mem-
bers of the Sid Kaplan Tribute program have made a planned gift to the endowment of $10,000 or more
to commemorate a particular person or event. Endowed Naming Opportunities for guest artists, musi-
cians’ chairs, concert series, educational programs or designated spaces allow donors to specify a name or
tribute for 10 years, 20 years or in perpetuity. For additional information, call Jan Fleisher at 412.392.3320.

SPECIAL NAMED GIFTS
THANK YOU. For the second year in a row your Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra was “number one” in dollars received during The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving on October 3rd!
In a 24-hour period the PSO received 645 gifts – over $247,000 – for the Annual Fund. Thank you to everyone who participated, and helped make Day of Giving 2012 a success
for the PSO and the other local non-profits who benefitted from our region’s overwhelming generosity.
If you missed Day of Giving – don’t worry – there’s still time to make a tax-deductible gift to the PSO’s 2012-2013 Annual Fund before the end of the calendar year.
The musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra have led the way with their pledge of $100,000 to the 2012-2013 Annual Fund. We ask that you show your support
for their incredible gesture by making your own gift – TODAY!
Consider making your gift to the Annual Fund via the web at www.pittsburghsymphony.org. It’s quick, secure and easy. An added bonus – By making your gift online, you help the PSO
save on administrative, printing and mailing costs. And your support will go to work immediately.
For more information about the PSO’s Annual Fund call the Donor Relations Department at 412.392.4880. THANK YOU!
