PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS ʻThe people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as soldiers rejoice when dividing plunder.ʼ Isaiah 9:2-3 Lord Jesus, Creator of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our Christmas preparations. We who have so much to do - seek quiet spaces to hear your voice; we who are anxious over many things - look forward to your coming among us; we who are blessed in so many ways - long for the complete joy of your kingdom; we whose hearts are heavy - seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, seeking the light – so help us to unlock the door of our hearts. And let gentleness enter in. Open the window of our souls - breathe in the season of miracles. No matter how far we have travelled, it is time to come home. Where Christmas abounds in love. Amen

Creator, during this season of waiting and watching, we draw near to you.Help us to be loving and generous with one another.Help us to remember those in need in our community. We pray this in the name of the Holy One,Whose Spirit gives courage to all. Amen.(from "Children of the Dancing Sun--Advent's Promise: Waiting in Hope", p. 47)

CHRISTMASTIDE

O God, giver of all good gifts, at this time of the giving and the receiving of gifts, help us to remember that Jesu said: It is more blessed to give than to receive. And put into our hearts that love which knows that true happiness comes from making others happy, and true wealth from sharing all we have: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

God of shepherds and sheep, thank you for tending us especially when we stray.Glory be to you and to all people on this earth. Amen

Lord God Almighty, Father of every family, against whom no door can be shut: Enter into the homes of our land, we beseech thee, with the angel of thy presence, to hallow them in pureness and beauty of love; and by thy dear Son, born in a stable, move our hearts to hear the cry of the homeless, and to convert all sordid and bitter dwellings into households of thine: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Help us to remember, that you were born in a stable and cradled in a manger, and so

keep us from coveting a wealth and a comfort an ease and a luxury which you never enjoyed.

Help us to remember, that there was no room for you in the inn, and grant that our lives may never become so crowded that there is no room in them for you.

Help us to remember, that to you there came the Shepherds and the Wise Men, and grant that learned and simple, high and humble great and small may be joined together in worshipping and in loving you.

Help us to remember that you grew up in an ordinary home, and went school, and worked in a carpenter's shop, and so grant that we may think no task too humble and too common for our hands to touch, when you, the Lord of Glory, lived amidst the common things.

Help us to remember, that you were obedient to your parents, and that you grew in wisdom and in stature, and in favour with God and man, and so help us to honour our father and mother, to discipline our bodies, and to live in such a way that we will gain the respect of our fellowmen, and gladden the heart of our father in heaven.

This we ask this Christmas Sunday for your love's sake. Amen.A Christmas Prayer from Memorials upon Several Occasions

Christmas Blessings May there be harmony in all your relationships. May sharp words, envious thoughts, and hostile feelings be dissolved. May you give and receive love generously. May this love echo in your heart like the joy of church bells on a clear December day. May each person who comes into your life be greeted as another Christ. May the honour given the Babe of Bethlehem be that which you extend to every guest who enters your presence. May the hope of this sacred season settle in your soul. May it be a foundation of courage for you when times of distress occupy your inner land.

May the wonder and awe that fills the eyes of children be awakened within you. May it lead you to renewed awareness and appreciation of whatever you too easily take for granted. May the bonds of love for one another be strengthened as you gather with your family and friends around the table of festivity and nourishment. May you daily open the gift of your life and be grateful for the hidden treasures it contains.

May the coming year be one of good health for you. May you have energy and vitality. May you care well for your body, mind and spirit.

May you keep your eye on the Star within you and trust this Luminescent Presence to guide and direct you each day.

May you go often to the Bethlehem of your heart and visit the One who offers you peace. May you bring this peace into our world. Joyce Rupp

PRAYERS FOR THE SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS DAY

Almighty God, who hast given us thy only begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin: Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O God, our Father, we remember at this Christmas time how the eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We thank you that Jesus took our human body upon him, so that we can never again dare to despise or neglect or misuse the body, since you made it your dwelling-place.

We thank you that Jesus did a day's work like any working-man, that he knew the problem of living together in a family, that he knew the frustration and irritation of serving the public, that he had to earn a living, and to face all the wearing routine of everyday work and life and living, and so clothed each common task with glory.

We thank you that he shared in all happy social occasions, that he was at home at weddings and at dinners and at festivals in the homes of simple ordinary people like ourselves. Grant that we may ever remember that in his unseen risen presence he is a guest in every home.

We thank you that he knew what friendship means, that he had his own circle of men whom he wanted to be with him, that he knew too what it means to be let down, to suffer from disloyalty and from the failure of love.

We thank you that he too had to bear unfair criticism, prejudiced opposition, malicious and deliberate misunderstanding.

We thank you that whatever happens to us, he has been there before, and that, because he himself has gone through things, he is able to help those who are going through them.

Help us never to forget that he knows life, because he lived life, and that he is with us at all times to enable us to live victoriously.

This we ask for your love's sake. Amen.

THE CHRISTMAS SAINTS

26th St Stephen, deacon and martyr

Stephen was one of the seven deacons appointed by the apostles to look after the distribution of alms to the faithful and to help in the ministry of preaching. His eloquent speech before the Sanhedrin, in which he shows the great sweep of Jewish history as leading to the birth of Jesus, the long-expected Messiah, and his impassioned plea that all might hear the good news of Jesus, leads to his inevitable martyrdom by being stoned to death. The witnesses placed their clothes at the feet of Saul (afterwards Paul), who consented to his death.

Gracious Father, who gave the first martyr Stephengrace to pray for those who took up stones against him:grant that in all our sufferings for the truthwe may learn to love even our enemiesand to seek forgiveness for those who desire our hurt, looking up to heaven to him who was crucified for us,Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate, who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

27th St John, Apostle and Evangelist

Whether or not John the Apostle and John the Evangelist are one and the same, the Church honours on this day the one who proclaims Jesus as the Word made flesh and who is 'the disciple whom Jesus loved'. John was one of the sons of Zebedee, along with James and Peter, who followed Jesus. John was there at the Transfiguration of Jesus on the holy mountain; he was there with Jesus at the last supper; he was there with Jesus in his agony in the garden; he was there with Jesus and his mother, standing at the foot of the cross; he was there with Jesus as a witness of his resurrection and 'he saw and believed'. John was a witness to the Word, he proclaimed the Word and he lived and died witnessing to the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ, who loved him and whom he loved.

Merciful Lord, cast your bright beams of light upon the Church:that, being enlightened by the teachingof your blessèd apostle and evangelist Saint John,we may so walk in the light of your truththat we may at last attain to the light of everlasting life;through Jesus Christ your incarnate Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, light of the world, Son of God, guide and teacher of human friends, We thank you for the witness of John, Apostle and Evangelist. Help us so to read and meditate upon his life and words that we may draw closer to you day by day [email protected] PSP Christmas 17

CollectHeavenly Father, whose children suffered at the hands of Herod, though they had done no wrong:by the suffering of your Sonand by the innocence of our livesfrustrate all evil designsand establish your reign of justice and peace;through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Even as we praise you, Lord,we cannot escape the darker side of life.Is it right that we should be rejoicingin blessings receivedwhile others are engulfed in tragedy? We find it hard to understandthe suffering so many have to endure. We hold to the fact that in Jesusyou identified yourself with the weak, the helpless, and with all who endure pain or sorrow. We still cannot understandwhy the world is the way it is,but we do believe that you are calling usto play our part in carrying on the work of Jesus.Stiffen our resolve, we pray,to give help in his namewherever we have the opportunity to do so.Edmund Banyard

POETRY

Neighbours of the Christ Night

Deep in the shelter of the cave,The ass with drooping headStood weary in the shadow, whereHis master's hand had led.About the manger oxen lay,Bending a wide-eyed gazeUpon the little new-born Babe,Half worship, half amaze.High in the roof the doves were set,And cooed there, soft and mild,Yet not so sweet as, in the hay,The Mother to her Child. The gentle cows breathed fragrant breathTo keep Babe Jesus warm,While loud and clear, o'er hill and dale,The cocks crowed, "Christ is born!"Out in the fields, beneath the stars,The young lambs sleeping lay,And dreamed that in the manger sleptAnother small as they.

These were Thy neighbours, Christmas Child; To Thee their love was given,For in Thy baby face there shoneThe wonder-light of Heaven.Nora Archibald Smith

A Christmas Carol

The Christ-child lay on Mary's lap, His hair was like a light. (O weary, weary were the world, But here is all aright.)

The Christ-child lay on Mary's breast, His hair was like a star. (O stern and cunning are the kings, But here the true hearts are.)

The Christ-child lay on Mary's heart,His hair was like a fire. (O weary, weary is the world, But here the world's desire.)

The Christ-child stood at Mary's knee, His hair was like a crown. And all the flowers looked up at Him, And all the stars looked down.G.K. [email protected] PSP Christmas 19

A Christmas Carol

The shepherds went their hasty way,And found the lowly stable-shedWhere the Virgin-Mother lay:And now they checked their eager tread,For to the Babe, that at her bosom clung,A Mother's song the Virgin-Mother sung.

They told her how a glorious light,Streaming from a heavenly throng.Around them shone, suspending night! While sweeter than a mother's song,Blest Angels heralded the Savior's birth,Glory to God on high! and Peace on Earth.

She listened to the tale divine,And closer still the Babe she pressed:And while she cried, the Babe is mine! The milk rushed faster to her breast:Joy rose within her, like a summer's morn;Peace, Peace on Earth! the Prince of Peace is born.

Thou Mother of the Prince of Peace,Poor, simple, and of low estate! That strife should vanish, battle cease,O why should this thy soul elate? Sweet Music's loudest note, the Poet's story,Didst thou ne'er love to hear of fame and glory?

And is not War a youthful king,A stately Hero clad in mail?Beneath his footsteps laurels spring;Him Earth's majestic monarchs hailTheir friends, their playmate! and his bold bright eyeCompels the maiden's love-confessing sigh.

Tell this in some more courtly scene,To maids and youths in robes of state!I am a woman poor and mean,And wherefore is my soul elate.War is a ruffian, all with guilt defiled,That from the aged father's tears his child!

A murderous fiend, by fiends adored,He kills the sire and starves the son;The husband kills, and from her boardSteals all his widow's toil had won;Plunders God's world of beauty; rends awayAll safety from the night, all comfort from the day.

Then wisely is my soul elate,That strife should vanish, battle cease:I'm poor and of low estate, [email protected] PSP Christmas 20

The Mother of the Prince of Peace.

Joy rises in me, like a summer's morn:Peace, Peace on Earth! The Prince of Peace is born!Samuel Taylor Coleridge

A Hymn on the Nativity of My Saviour

I sing the birth was born tonight,The Author both of life and light; The angels so did sound it,And like the ravished shepherds said,Who saw the light, and were afraid,Yet searched, and true they found it.

The Son of God, the eternal King,That did us all salvation bring,And freed the soul from danger; He whom the whole world could not take,The Word, which heaven and earth did make,Was now laid in a manger.

The Father's wisdom willed it so,The Son's obedience knew no "No,"Both wills were in one stature; And as that wisdom had decreed,The Word was now made Flesh indeed,And took on Him our nature.

What comfort by Him do we win?Who made Himself the Prince of sin,To make us heirs of glory? To see this Babe, all innocence,A Martyr born in our defense,Can man forget this story?
