It is a National Research and Development Institute in the field of vocational education. The Institute was established at Bhopal in 1993 to advise and assist the Central and State Governments and Union Territories on the implementation of all matters relating to vocational education and training in schools. The PSSCIVE celebrated World Youth Skills Day on July 16, 2018 (Monday) at Ninad Auditorium of the Institute. More than 200 students, teachers, teacher educators, faculty and staff of PSSCIVE and Regional Institute of Education, Bhopal, representatives from industry and sector skill councils and students of Demonstration Multipurpose School, NCERT, Bhopal were present on the occasion.

Introduction

To raise the awareness about the importance of youth skills development, the United Nations World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) is celebrated on July 15. The theme for this year WYSD was

Welcome Address

Prof. Rajesh P. Khambayat, Joint Director, PSSCIVE welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignitaries to the function. Addressing the audience on the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Prof. Khambayat stated that it is an important tool to address youth unemployment and to empower young people to have decent and gainful employment. He further stated that we need to focus on 3 Cs, which means (i) Competitiveness, (ii) Capabilities and (iii) Connectedness for preparing youth for the success in future. He informed that the PSSCIVE completed its 25 years of existence on 5th July, 2018. During these 25 years the Institute has been actively involved with the stakeholders in promoting the success of vocational education. He also informed that during the Silver Jubilee celebration, various

activities in the campus were organised, which included planting of tree saplings, Blood Donation camp, and Painting and Quiz competition for students. He stated that the PSSCIVE is making all efforts to promote ecofriendly environment and products in the campus and therefore, it has included “Green skills” module in the employability skills curriculum of vocational subjects in schools from the current academic year to promote the concept of sustainable development on a large scale.

Video Film on Activities of PSSCIVE as UNEVOC Network Centre

A video film on the activities organized by the PSSCIVE as UNEVOC Network Centre in India was shown to the audience. It included the role played by the Centre in fostering international collaborations, partnerships and cooperation among TVET practitioners, civil society, local

communities, researchers, policy-makers and organisation of the training programmes for TVET practitioners. It also show cased the participation of the faculty in UNEVOC Electronic forum (E-forum) for exchange of information on various aspects of TVET. The participation of the faculty in various international programmes organized by UNESCO-UNEVOC were also highlighted in the video film.

Narration of an Inspirational Story by a Young Entrepreneur

A young entrepreneur Anubhav Dubey, who started food start-up in the name of “Chai Sutta Bar” at the age of 22 shared his experiences as a young entrepreneur. He informed that the Chai Sutta Bar is a chain of Tea and Coffee with the foremost priority to serve the authentic tea in superior quality and at a very affordable price. The tea or coffee is served in clay cups for promoting green consumerism. Starting with 1 outlet in 2015, the business has expanded to 10 outlets in various cities of India. He narrated the success story as a foodpreneur and also highlighted the various financial and other problems that were faced during the establishment of the food start-up. He informed that his first employee was an orphan and over the years around 200 families got employment in the outlets. He stated that our diamonds are our customer and our unique selling propositions are the taste, service and price of the tea or coffee.

There was lot of excitement among the students of Demonstration Multipurpose School, Bhopal after hearing the young entrepreneur. The students asked several questions, which included the challenges that were faced in starting the enterprise and the future plan of action. Dr. Vipin Kumar Jain, faculty of PSSCIVE also asked questions and described some of the key characteristics of an entrepreneur.

Debate

A Debate competition on the topic “Vocational Education should be made Compulsory in Schools” was organized on the occasion. The vocational students of Demonstration Multipurpose School participated in the competition. The debate was intended to know the perception of the students on the importance of vocational education in school. Out of 11 participants, five argued against the motion, while others argued for the motion. Most of the students opined that the vocational education should be made compulsory, but the curriculum should be more practice based rather than knowledge based, as they need more time to spend on the general education subjects.

Chief Guest Address

The Chief Guest Prof. Sarit Kumar Chaudhary, Director, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (National Museum of Mankind), Ministry of Culture, Government of India shared his experiences and highlighted some of the activities of the organisation. He stated that National Museum of Mankind organizes skill based activities which include pottery making and clay artifacts. To encourage the young budding entrepreneurs, he also narrated the story of the concept of a Library in London, where visitors are required to pay for the tea, coffee and a range of snacks and confectionary but they are not required to pay for borrowing the books. He stated that it is a great idea of promoting lifelong learning amongst the youth. He opined that students should think of new ideas and innovations to become entrepreneurs at an early age.

Vote of Thanks

Prof. Vinay Swarup Mehrotra, Coordinator of the UNEVOC Network Centre at PSSCIVE proposed the vote of thanks. He appreciated the presence of the young entrepreneur and thanked the Chief Guests and other guests for joining the celebration.

Exhibition of Publications

An exhibition of the publications of PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education, Bhopal was organized on the occasion. The World Youth Skills Day Poster and WYSD infographic received from the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre, Bonn, Germany was prominently displayed on the notice boards of the Institute and also during the exhibition.

Skill based Games for PSSCIVE Faculty and Staff

Skill based games were organized for the faculty and staff members of PSSCIVE in the afternoon session of the celebration of WYSD 2018.
