Dr. Tandon is professor of Psychiatry at University of Florida and the Chief of Psychiatry in the Program of Mental Health at the State of Florida’s Department of Children and Families. Formerly, he was Professor at the Department of Psychiatry in the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, from 1987–2004. In addition to his medical degree, he has a Master’s degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the University of Michigan School of Public Health and a diploma in Business Administration from the Harvard University Business School. At the University of Michigan, he developed the Clinical and Research Schizophrenia Program, which was the sixth most published schizophrenia program in the world in the 1990’s. Dr. Tandon has authored more than 250 scientific publications, and given over 600 national and international scientific presentations.

Dr. Weisler, Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at UNC Chapel Hill and Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavorial Sciences at Duke, has been in practice since 1980 in Raleigh, North Carolina, where his group currently follows more than 2,000 patients with a mixture of psychiatric disorders. He is a past recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award from the UNC Chapel Hill Psychiatry Department. Dr. Weisler is credited with first identifying the usefulness of Lamictal (lamotrigine) in bipolar disorder when, in 1993, he presented a report on his successful treatment on a compassionate use basis of two severely treatment-resistant bipolar patients with the then-unapproved drug. Dr. Weisler is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has been the principal investigator in over 250 clinical trials. Dr. Weisler has authored or co-authored more than 75 journal articles and book chapters on bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder, depression, PTSD, social phobia, dementia, pharmaco-economics, suicide and generalized anxiety disorders.

ABOUT OUR DIRECTOR AND FACULTY

Dr. Nasrallah is the director of the Schizophrenia Research Program at University of Cincinnati, and his research focuses on the neurobiology and psychopharmacology of schizophrenia and related disorders. He is Editor-In-Chief of two prominent journals (Current Psychiatry and Schizophrenia Research) and is the co-founder of the Schizophrenia International Research Society. He is a fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, past president of the Cincinnati Psychiatric Society and the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists, current president of the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Education and Research Foundation, and past president of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Faculty Forum.

Dr. Citrome, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry & Behavorial Sciences at New York Medical College, is a principal investigator, co-investigator, and collaborator on a number of ongoing projects centering on psychopharmaceutical approaches to schizophrenia and bipolar disorders, including new and novel medications, treatment–refractory schizophrenia, and the management of aggressive and violent behavior. He also is an active member of the Medication Utilization and Outcomes Research Program that focuses on the practice of psychiatry within the 16 hospitals operated by the New York State Office of Mental Health.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE? This activity is designed for child and adolescent psychiatrists, general psychiatrists, geriatric psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals interested in treating patients with psychiatric disorders to remission with measurement-based care.

PROGRAM GLOBAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this CME symposium, those in attendance should be able to: • Discuss the emerging new mechanisms

for drug development in schizophrenia outside the dopamine pathways.

• Review the various novel formulations for psychotropic agents and the advan-tages of various delivery samples beyond the traditional oral medications.

• Employ combination therapy for cer-tain psychiatric conditions with multiple symptom domains or comorbidities.

• Apply nonpharmacological interventions in conjunction with pharmacotherapy to enhance patient improvement when medication alone is not enough.

• Discuss numerous DSM-IV disorders that have no FDA-approved medication and how to manage them until drugs become indicated for these disorders.
