O LITORAL DO CONCELHO DE LAGOA É
INESQUECÍVEL. A BELEZA NATURAL DAS ARRIBAS
ALCANTILADAS SÓ É ULTRAPASSADA POR UM MAR
DE UM AZUL LÍMPIDO, A BEIJAR PEQUENAS PRAIAS
CHEIAS DE ACOLHEDORES RECANTOS NATURAIS.
A orla costeira do Concelho, estende-se por pouco mais de 17 Km mas, apesar da sua pequena extensão, maravilhará os visitantes mais exigentes. Este troço impar da costa Algarvia é constituído por arribas rendilhadas, debruçadas sobre o mar, onde se sucedem harmoniosamente, promontórios alcantilados e pequenas praias de areias finas, banhadas por um mar de águas transparentes e tranquilas.
A mesma complexa geomorfologia que originou aquelas formas particulares, deu também origem a curiosas estruturas chamadas algares poços verticais que ligam a superfície a uma intricada rede de galerias subterrâneas que, eventualmente, desembocam no mar.
Merece destaque, pela sua complexidade e beleza, o Algar Seco, perto de Carvoeiro.
Todo o maciço é atravessado por cavernas, fendas e cavidades de todas as formas, que constituem abrigo para uma diversidade de seres vivos, onde se destaca o raromorcego-de-ferradura-mourisco (precioso para a biodiversidade da região).Por entre a vegetação mediterrânica que cobre a crista das arribas, onde o tomilho, o alecrim e outras aromáticas perfumam a atmosfera, crescem as fabulosas orquídeas mediterrânicas como aErva-abelha. Por aqui também se encontra a Aroeira, o Carrasco a Roselha-maior;ou Narciso-de-inverno, a Palmeira-anã e o Murtinho. O elenco florístico é vasto e diversificado, com uma história natural que vale a pena conhecer.
Desfilam ao longo do ano aves migratórias que não deixam indiferentes os ornitólogos.
Uns binóculos, um guia de aves e um pouco de paciência revelará imponentes aves de rapina como o Falcão-peregrino e o Francelho. Aparecerão também nas nossas objectivas grandes passariformes como a ruidosa Gralha-preta ou o pequeno e coloridoPisco-de-peito-ruivo. No verão, várias espécies de Andorinhões enchem o ar com gritos e acrobacias.
Com paciência ou sem ela, a omnipresente e atrevida Gaivota-de-patas-amarelas será sempre fácil de avistar. É ela que, desde há milhões de anos, reina sobre esta costa rochosa.

The shoreline of the municipality extends for just over 17 km but, despite being small, it will wonderer the most demanding visitors. This unique section of the Algarve coast consists on laced cliffs, bended over the sea, where harmoniously succeed headland cliffs and small beaches of fine sand, bathed by a sea of transparent and calm waters.
The same complex geomorphology that originated those unpaired shapes, was also the origin of curious structures called algares vertical wells who connect the surface to a intricate network of subterranean galleries that, eventually, are lead to the sea. It is noteworthy for its complexity and beauty the Algar Seco near Carvoeiro.
The entire rock massif is crossed by caves, crevices and cavities of all shapes, which give shelter to a wide diversity of life. From these, it stands out the cave bats, being a few very rare out the cave bats,
being a few very rare as the Mehely’s Horseshoe Bat that is a precious heritage for the region biodiversity.Among the Mediterranean vegetation covering the crest of the cliffs where the thyme, rosemary and other herbs perfume the atmosphere grow small but fabulous Mediterranean orchids such as the Bee Orchid. It’s almost unfair to refer to the Aroeira (Brazilian Pepper), the Kermes Oak and the Cistus; or the Bunch-flowered Narcissus, the Miniature Date Palm or even the Myrtle. The floristic cast is vast and diverse, with a natural history worth knowing.
Over the years, migratory birds do a parade that doesn’t let ornithologists indifferent. Binoculars, a bird guide and a little patience will reveal imposing raptors such as the Peregrine Falcon, and the Lesser Kestrel. There may also appear large passerine as the noisy Carrion Crow or the small and colourful European Robin. During summer, several species of Common Swift fill the air with shouting and stunts. With patience, or without it, the ubiquitous and sassyYellow-legged Gull will be always easy to watch. Since millions of years ago, she reigns over this rocky coast.

São as Praias Naturais de Lagoa.
PRAIAS SELVAGENSNa orla costeira há mais de 40 praias encastradas nas arribas calcárias, a maior parte delas inacessíveis por terra e muitas de difícil acesso, mesmo por mar. São as Praias Selvagens de Lagoa. Nelas a natureza excedeu-se na criação de recantos maravilhosos.
Belas mas perigosas, frequentá-las exige a adoção de alguns cuidados. Assim é fundamental manter a distancia de segurança em relação às arribas. Recordamos ainda que nestas praias não há vigilância por nadadores salvadores.

At the same time, a strict monitoring programme assures the high quality of the bathing waters.
NATURAL BEACHESThe clear waters of Lagoa coast attract thousands of visitors to the warm sands stretched along its 17 km limestone cliffs. Through the last decades has been naturally consolidated the use of these beaches that, although with minimum or even nonexistent services, do not keep away the bathers.
WILD BEACHESIn the shoreline there are over 40 beaches recessed in the limestone cliffs, being most of them inaccessible by land and many of them even by sea. Those are the wild beaches of Lagoa. The nature has exceeded itself on the creation of amazing corners with clear water.
Beautiful but dangerous, face them demands adopting some care. Therefore, it is fundamental to keep the safety distance of the cliffs. Let’s remember that there is no vigilance by swim-saviours.

PRAIA GRANDEPRAIA BALNEAR

No troço final do estuário do rio Arade, o areal
desta praia tranquila encontra-se protegido
pelos dois molhes da barra do rio, e enquadrado
por arribas de cristas revestidas por uma
vigorosa vegetação mediterrânica.
A Norte da praia ergue-se o Forte de
S. João do Arade, estrutura que, em conjunto
com a Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, garantia
a defesa do estuário perante as investidas
da pirataria. Não longe, um pouco mais a
montante, avista-se o casario branco da vila de
Ferragudo, antiga aldeia de pescadores, hoje
pequeno núcleo urbano a merecer uma visita.
At the end of the estuary of the Arade River,
the sand of this quiet beach is protected by two
walls and framed by cliffs with crests coated
with vigorous Mediterranean vegetation.
On the North of the beach rises the
S. João do Arade Fort (Forte de São João do
Arade), a building that, along with the Santa
Catarina Fortress (Fortaleza de Santa Catarina),
guaranteed the defence of the estuary when
attacked by pirates. Not far, just a little ahead,
you can see the white house of the Ferragudo
village, a former fishing village, which today
comprehends a small urban core that it’s worth
visiting.

Localizada a norte da Ponta do Altar, o seu
areal encontra-se enquadrado por uma densa
mancha de vegetação mediterrânica.
Esta praia, que marca a embocadura natural
do rio Arade, é rodeada por arribas da cor do
barro, onde são bem visíveis os fósseis marinhos
que constituem a matriz da rocha calcária,
formando esculturas naturais que a erosão
marinha talhou ao longo das eras geológicas.
Daqui avistam-se os molhes da foz do rio e,
em segundo plano, a marina e a cidade de
Portimão.
Located north of the «Ponta do Altar»
(Lighthouse), this beach is framed by a dense
patch of Mediterranean vegetation.
This beach marks the natural embouchure of
the river and it’s surrounded by clay-coloured
cliffs where the marine fossils are quit visible
and comprehend the matrix of the limestone,
forming natural sculptures that were carved by
the sea along the geological eras.
From here can be seen the piers from the river
mouth and, in second plan, the marina and the
city of Portimão.

Encaixada entre arribas como todas as praias
do Concelho de Lagoa, a Praia dos Caneiros
forma um conjunto natural com a praia do
Vale da Azinhaga, apenas separadas por um
pequeno promontório.
Impressionam as altas arribas de tons de ocre e
rosado e, junto ao areal, as pequenas grutas e
reentrâncias cavadas pelo mar na rocha frágil.
Do areal avista-se, a poente, a Ponta do Altar
e a velha casa do farol, agora apequenada pela
torre do VTS (sistema de controlo do tráfego
marítimo) que domina a paisagem. Sobre
a praia, as cristas das arribas encontram-se
colonizadas por uma diversidade de plantas
características destes habitats secos da
paisagem mediterrânica - Tomilho,
Funcho-do-mar, Pampilho marítimo, Limónio,
Barrilha, Salgadeira e Aroeira, entre outras.
Embedded between cliffs has all this
municipality beaches, the Caneiros Beach forms
a natural set along Praia do Vale da Azinhaga,
separated only by a small promontory.
It can be pretty impressive the ochre and pink
high cliffs and small caves and recesses carved
by the sea into the fragile rock. From the beach
you can see on the west the Lighthouse of
Ponta do Altar and its old house that is now
smaller because of de VTS tower (a system for
maritime traffic control), which conquer the
scenery. Above the beach, the crests of the
cliffs are filled with a diversity of characteristic
plants of this dry Mediterranean landscape
Thyme, Samphire, Asteriscus Maritimus,
Common sea Lavender, Prickly Saltwort,
Mediterranean saltbush, Aroeira (Brazilian
Pepper), among others.

PRAIA DE CARVOEIROPRAIA BALNEARBATHING BEACH GPS: 37.09647,-8.47165
Carvoeiro tornou-se, nas últimas duas décadas,
num cosmopolita centro turístico do Concelho
mas, apesar disso, na vila são ainda frequentes
as pitorescas janelas, açoteias e platibandas
pintadas de tons de ocre e azul, contrastando
com o branco do casario que cai em cascata até
à praia.
No areal persistem os coloridos botes de
madeira das velhas fainas da pesca artesanal.
Os tempos mudaram, e agora as vistosas
embarcações aguardam grupos de turistas para
visitas às grutas que o mar escavou na rocha
sedimentar.
Ao longo das arribas, um conjunto de trilhos e
miradouros oferece oportunidades de percursos
pedonais à descoberta da orla costeira de
Lagoa (Trilho dos 7 Vales e Passadiço de
Carvoeiro).
Carvoeiro has become, in the last two
decades, a cosmopolitan touristic centre of the
municipality, but despite that, in the village it is
still frequent to see the picturesque windows,
terraces and parapets painted with shades of
ochre and blue, contrasting with the white of
the houses which go all the way to the beach.
On the beach persist the colourful wooden
boats of the old chores of traditional fishing.
Times have changed, and nowadays the showy
boats await groups of tourists to visit the
caves that the sea craved in sedimentary rock.
Along the cliffs, a set of paths and sights gives
the opportunity to do footpaths discovering
Lagoas’ shoreline (7 Valleys rail and Carvoeiro
footbridge) .

Arribas imponentes e abruptas enquadram
o pequeno, belo areal. Se por um lado os
ambientes emersos ao longo mas da costa
exibem a curiosa vegetação, típica dos
ambientes mediterrânicos da região, por
outro, o mar esconde explosões de vida
impressionantes, ao alcance de qualquer
mergulhador apenas munido de máscara e
barbatanas.
À noite, a brisa fresca da maresia envolve os
convivas de festas intimistas que só terminam
de madrugada.
Imposing and abrupt cliffs frame the small
but beautiful sand beach. If, for one hand, the
emerged environments along the coast show
the curious vegetation, typical of the regional
Mediterranean environments; on the other hand
the immense sea hides explosions of impressive
life, within reach of any diver, only equipped
with mask and fins.
At night, the cool sea breeze involves the party
guests who only finish at dawn.

Não é por acaso que esta pequena praia foi
escolhida para porto de abrigo das gentes do
mar. Aconchegada entre dois promontórios, o
areal está protegido contra grande parte das
intempéries que, desde sempre, ameaçaram
a vida dos pescadores. Quando o abrigo da
pequena baía não era suficiente, a fé era o
outro porto dos navegantes que, seguindo
um impulso místico ancestral, ergueram no
promontório sagrado a pequena ermida de
N. Sra. da Rocha.
Para quem passa pelo Concelho de Lagoa, é
incontornável um curto passeio indolente ao
promontório e à sua ermida. Dali avistam-se
as duas baías - a da Praia Nova e a da Praia
da N. Sra. da Rocha, com o seu núcleo de
pesca tradicional a conviver com uma intensa
atividade balnear num areal que mal chega aos
90m de extensão. Com alguma sorte podem
avistar-se grupos de golfinhos a brincar ao
largo.
Is not by chance that this little beach was
chosen as haven for the sea people. Nestling
between two promontories, the beach is
protected against most of the weather
problems, that since ever have been threatening
the lives of fishermen. When the shelter of the
small bay wasn’t enough, faith was considered
as another haven for sailors that, according the
mystical ancestor impulse, raised in the sacred
promontory the small chapel of Nossa Senhora
da Rocha. For those who visit the municipality
of Lagoa, is unavoidable the short walk to that
promontory and its chapel.
From there you can see two bays Praia Nova
and Praia da Nossa Senhora da Rocha with their
fishing traditional core, living with the intense
touristic activity on a small beach that hardly
gets to 90 meters of extension. With some luck,
you can even watch groups of dolphins playing
off the bay.

Vale a pena descer a longa e estreita escadaria
de calçada portuguesa para chegar ao areal.
A brancura da areia, a transparência da água
e a tranquilidade da praia são a generosa
recompensa de quem se mete ao caminho.
It is worth going down the long and narrow
staircase of Portuguese Calçada to get to the
beach. The whiteness of the sand, the water
transparency and the tranquillity of the beach
are a generous reward for those who are
courage enough to go down that path.

PRAIA DE VALE OLIVALPRAIA BALNEARBATHING BEACH GPS: 37.101929,-8.370254
No extremo nascente do Concelho de Lagoa
surge o areal da baía de Armação de Pêra. Os
rochedos perdem gradualmente a arrogância e,
no Vale Olival, começa a doçura da monótona
extensão de areia. A arriba, mais frágil nesta
zona, está muito desgastada pela erosão.
Um estreito trilho serpenteia através da
vegetação e guia o caminhante até à vizinha
Praia dos Beijinhos. É preciso cuidado para
não colocar um pé em falso, mas vale a pena
percorrê-lo para contemplar as ravinas, os arcos
rochosos e o sempre presente azul do mar.
In the eastern end of the municipality, arises
the sandy bay of Armação de Pêra. The rocks
and cliffs are slowly loosing arrogance and,
in Vale Olival, it starts the sweetness of the
monotonous extension of sand. The cliff more
fragile in this area is very worn by the erosion.
A narrow trail meanders through the vegetation
and guides the visitor to a nearby beach Praia
dos Beijinhos. It’s necessary to watch out and
not put one foot in false, but its worth go
through it to contemplate the ravines, the rocky
arches and the infinite blue of the sea.

PRAIA DO MOLHEPRAIA NATURAL

Pequeno areal que se desenvolve em torno do
molhe nascente do rio Arade. O acesso
faz-se por uma escadaria íngreme que desce até
à praia por mais de trinta metros de parede
rochosa alcantilada. É rodeada por arribas
calcárias intensamente fissuradas, e cristas
revestidas com espécies da flora mediterrânica.
As águas, calmas durante o Verão,
convertem-se num local procurado para a
prática do surf durante o Inverno. A natureza
frágil das arribas torna sensato guardar uma
distância de segurança.
It is a small beach that developed around the
east jetty of the Arade River. Its access it’s
made by a steep staircase that goes down
all the way to the beach for over 30 meters
of precipitous rocky wall. It is surrounded by
limestone cliffs intensely fissured, and crests
coated with species of Mediterranean flora.
The waters, calm during summer, are sought for
surfing during winter. The fragile nature of the
cliffs makes it wise to keep a safety distance
from them.

Não é fácil chegar ao Paraíso. À Praia do Paraíso
também não, mas o esforço será largamente
recompensado pelo murmurar tranquilo das
ondas e pelo cheiro a maresia desta nesga de
areal, escondida do bulício da vila de Carvoeiro
ali tão perto.
Não vale a pena contar os degraus porque são
muitos, mas cada um deles faz-nos aproximar
de um local impar. O cansaço provocado pelo
percurso dissipa-se no serpentear da escadaria
que percorre o anfiteatro avermelhado da arriba
calcária. O ar é atravessado pelo eco dos gritos
das Gaivotas que, voando em círculos nesta
pequena enseada, lembram-nos que ali é o seu
reino.
It is not get to Paradise. And to Paradise Beach
(Praia do Paraíso) neither. But the effort will
be amply rewarded by the quiet murmur of the
haves and the smell of the salt air of this small
beach, hided from the bustle of the village of
Carvoeiro, right there beside.
Don’t mind counting the number of stairs
because there are lots of them, but each one
makes us get closer to a unique place. The
exhaustion caused by the walk disappears as
soon as the eyes penetrate the marvellous
red amphitheatre of limestone cliff. The air is
traversed by the echo of the cries of seagulls
that, flying in circles in this small bay, remember
and warn everyone that there is their kingdom.

Num recorte anguloso da costa, esconde-se um
pequeno areal dourado, enquadrado por arribas
esculpidas pela erosão. Dominando a praia, um
leixão interrompe a linha do horizonte azul.
O acesso à praia é feito através de um túnel
escavado na rocha e, apesar da dificuldade de
acesso, a praia é muito popular entre locais e
visitantes. No espaço envolvente,
o Pampilho-marítimo e o Limónio salpicam a
crista da arriba calcária, enquanto Aroeiras,
Zimbros, Carrascos e Palmeiras-anãs cobrem o
barranco verdejante que desagua na praia.
O temperamento inconstante do maciço
rochoso aconselha prudência, pelo que o
visitante deverá guardar uma distância de
segurança em relação às escarpas altaneiras.
In an angular cut of the coast hides a small and
golden sand beach, framed by cliffs craved by
the sea erosion.
Dominating the beach, there is a rocky islet that
interrupts the blue horizon line.
The access to the beach is made by a tunnel
carved into the rock and, despite this difficult
access, the beach is very popular among locals
and visitors. In the involving space, plants
like Asteriscus Maritimus and Common sea
Lavender coat the crest of the limestone cliff,
while plants like Aroeira, the Common Juniper,
the Kermes Oak and the Miniature date Palm
cover the verdant ravine that empties at the
beach. The fickle temperament of the rocky
cliffs advises caution. Therefore, the visitor
should keep a safety distance from the towering
cliffs.

A praia, que foi outrora o domínio das gentes
da faina da pesca é, nestes tempos, ocupada
sobretudo por banhistas.
Agora, os coloridos botes de madeira dão as
boas vindas da praia a estes novos utentes.
Durante o verão, a atividade piscatória é
complementada com visitas às grutas, guiadas
por quem melhor conhece esta costa - os
pescadores.
The beach that was once domain of the local
fishermen is, nowadays, occupied essentially
by bathers. Now, the colourful wooden boats
welcome these new users of the beach. During
summer, the fishing activity is complemented
with visits to the caves, guided by those who
best know this coast the fishermen.

Não é por acaso que a Praia da Marinha foi
galardoada com a Bandeira Dourada e colocada
entre as 100 mais belas praias do mundo. A
Natureza excedeu-se neste recanto do Algarve,
e forjou um recanto mágico. Quem pensou que
as arribas alcantiladas e os pórticos suspensos
sobre o mar; os gritos das aves marinhas e o
azul do mar, esgotavam o encanto desta praia,
enganou-se! Uma máscara de mergulho e umas
barbatanas são as chaves para penetrar no
reino submarino.
Este património natural mereceu a atenção
de várias entidades como a Universidade
do Algarve, a CCDR-Algarve e o Município
de Lagoa para estabelecer um conjunto de
percursos subaquáticos de descoberta da
natureza.
Aventure-se! Belas, mas de temperamento
instável, as arribas rochosas podem dar origem
a desmoronamentos inesperados, pelo que
o visitante deverá guardar uma distância de
segurança.
It is not by chance that this beach was awarded
with the Golden Flag (Bandeira Dourada) and
placed among the top 100 beautiful beaches
in the world. The nature has exceeded itself
on this little corner of Algarve and created a
magical nook. Who thought that the limestone
cliffs and the suspended porticos, the cries of
the sea birds and the blue of the sea, would
deplete the charm of this beach, have made a
huge mistake! A diving mask and some fins are
the key to penetrate the undersea kingdom.
This natural heritage deserved the attention
of several entities such as the University of
Algarve, the CCDR-Algarve and the Municipality
of Lagoa to establish a set of underwater routes
to discover the nature. Adventure! Beautiful but
with fickle temperament, the rocky cliffs can
collapse unexpectedly, for that the visitor must

Com a praia de Albandeira, o termo recanto
ganha um novo significado. Para lá chegar, o
visitante terá de percorrer uma estreita estrada
que parece já não ser destes tempos. Tal
como muitos dos caminhos da região no século
passado, serpenteia por entre velhos muros de
pedra solta, constituindo, por si só, como que
um espaço eco museológico.
Atravessam-se assim 2 km de característicos
matos mediterrânicos que vão ocupando
antigos pomares de sequeiro há muito
abandonados.
A pequena praia de Albandeira surpreende-nos
pelo encanto miniatural dos seus elementos
- um pequeno promontório divide-a em dois
areais acariciados por um mar de um azul puro
e luminoso, o conjunto aninha-se como um
brilhante entre pequenas arribas rendilhadas.
With this beach, the term «corner» gains a
whole new meaning.
To get there, the visitor will have to go trough
a narrow road that looks coming from another
times. Such as many paths in the region from
the past century, it lays between old walls of
loose stone, which by its own consists in an eco
museum space.
There are over 2 km of characteristics
Mediterranean bushes that start occupying
former dryland orchards long abandoned.
The small beach can surprise us by its charm
from the miniature elements - a small
promontory divides the beach in two, being
them gently caressed by the blue, pure and
bright sea, while this two beach set nests like a
jewel in the mid of the small laced cliffs.

A Praia dos Tremoços ocupa uma pequena baía
abrigada, na parte nascente do Concelho de
Lagoa. Um molhe submerso e a alimentação
artificial da praia garantem um areal,
praticamente inexistente há alguns anos. Apesar
de não ser fácil encontrar o acesso, a
persistência será largamente recompensado por
um dia de praia inesquecível.
This beach occupies a small and sheltered
beach, on the east of the municipality. A
submerse jetty and the deposit of sand by the
county assure now the existence of the beach,
that was almost vanished just a few years
ago. Although the access is not easy to find,
the persistence will be truly rewarded by an
unforgettable sun and beach day.

Chega-se à praia dos Beijinhos a partir da praia
do Vale Olival, por uma estreita vereda que
serpenteia através da vegetação típica da crista
das arribas. É preciso cuidado para não colocar
um pé em falso, mas vale a pena percorrer este
trilho pitoresco e contemplar os barrancos e os
arcos rochosos.
You get to the «Praia dos Beijinhos» through
the «Vale olival» beach, by a narrow path that
crosses the typical vegetation on the top of
the cliffs. It’s better watch out so you don’t set
foot in false, but it’s worth to walk along this
picturesque path and contemplate the bounds,
the rocky arches and the infinite sea.

PRAIAS SELVAGENSWILD BEACHES
Na orla costeira há mais de 40 praias encastradas nas arribas calcárias, a maior parte delas inacessíveis por terra e muitas de difícil acesso, mesmo por mar. São as Praias Selvagens de Lagoa. Nelas a natureza excedeu-se na criação de recantos maravilhosos.
Belas mas perigosas, frequentá-las exige a adoção de alguns cuidados. Assim é fundamental manter a distancia de segurança em relação às arribas. Recordamos ainda que nestas praias não há vigilância por nadadores salvadores.
In the shoreline there are over 40 beaches recessed in the limestone cliffs, being most of them inaccessible by land and many of them even by sea. Those are the wild beaches of Lagoa. The nature has exceeded itself on the creation of amazing corners with clear water.
Beautiful but dangerous, face them demands adopting some care. Therefore, it is fundamental to keep de safety distance of the cliffs Lets remember that there is no vigilance by swim-saviours.
