Dear Parents
Welcome to the third PTA newsletter of the year.
This newsletter is designed to provide a flavour of what is to come in the Spring term, give you some dates for your diaries, and ask for your help. Without it, the events we have planned together with the British International School will not be able to go ahead.
We will be also taking this opportunity to thank all who contributed to our school life in December.
What is to come?
• Shows. Following last year’s stunning success, Peter Lawson, our brilliant music teacher, and our lovely teachers are working on a set of new performances to be enjoyed on April 3rd, on the big stage in Zek. Alkent show is scheduled for the morning, and Etiler for the afternoon.
o We will all be expected to contribute by sewing costumes, shopping for props and materials, building the stage decoration, etc., etc. Do expect a note from your teacher/school coordinator and please contribute.
o The Eminonu shopping trip is set for February, together with the school assistants. If you would like to come along with your car and/or a driver, please volunteer soonest. This is an especially interesting trip for seamstresses as we will be visiting all those lovely sewing and fabrics’ shops of the Grand Bazaar.
• Valentine Disco (Etiler, Wednesday, February 12th , 4pm – 6:30pm). This event is run by the Student Council; any proceeds go to the charity of their choice. Parents are kindly requested to pick up the
children on time after the disco is over. The PTA supplies crisps, kindly donated by the PepsiCo/Frito Lays and pop corn.
o We are looking for volunteers to pop the corn and we need to borrow a few pop corn machines. Can you help?
o Would you make another suitable donation? o Would you like to chaperone the children during the disco?
Contact [email protected]. • Carnival Party (Alkent, Friday, February 14th, 1:15pm – 2:45pm). We are looking for volunteers to help
set up and run games. We would like to have a bake sale for the children, in addition to free crisps, courtesy of PepsiCo/Frito Lays.
o Would you bake for the party? o Would you make another suitable donation? o Would you join the fun helping out with the party games?
Contact [email protected] • Open Day at School. A ‘fly on the wall’ opportunity to see our school at work is coming on March 18th, 9-‐
12noon. If you would like to visit, observe regular classes and specialist lessons, please make sure you sign up with the school administration before hand and obey the strict ‘do not disturb’ rules. Classes should continue as usual.
• Cross Country Race. The race for Etiler children will take place in the Belgrade forest on April 7th. Our children need parents to cheer them on along the 2.5km path. Please, feel encouraged to put on your running shoes and help the kids along the path.
• Easter Egg Hunt and the Bonnet Parade. Coming April 11th, on the last day of school. We can use some skilled parents to hide the eggs, etc., etc.
• Book Swap. We would like to run a book swap for the children if we can find volunteers to supervise on March 6th, the International Book Appreciation Day. Our children have got a lot of used books at home and would surely enjoy swapping them for something else to read.
• Etiler Skating Trip. We are looking for volunteers to hold hands of the absolute beginners on ice. Date TBD.
• EYFS Gardening Project. The Early Years are looking for parents with ‘green fingers’ to work with children planting flowers, vegetables, sunflower seeds, etc., to add more color to our playgrounds. Donations of pots/containers suitable for growing plants are welcome. Contact [email protected]
• EYFS Outdoors Kitchen. Your old pots and pans are welcome as a donation to make a creative music area outdoors.
• EYFS Non-‐uniform Day. February 14th is a non-‐uniform day for EYES. Kindly send a lira donation for charity and dress your children in red.
Clubs: from Parents for our Children
On the back of the successful bake off day, Mark Phoenix (Ella’s dad) is running cooking club for the Key Stage 2 children of Etiler in the Spring term. If you can contribute as a parent and run a club to benefit our children, please contact the PTA today. For example, we would like to set up a chess club in Alkent. Can you help?

Santa’s Grotto
Many thanks go to Mike and Flora Becket for their unparalleled patience in volunteering for Mr and Mrs Claus. We have been touched by their graciousness. Cheers go to Dawn Biyashev for convincing Santa to spend a day at the British International School on his way from the North Pole. We owe it to Inger Hyper and Hana Moualla for contributing to the Grotto look.
Bake off Day
We are happy to report back that our bake off day has been a smashing success with all the Etiler children participating in a day of making their own personalized chocolate muffins under the direction of PTA’s food and beverage liaison, Mark Phoenix, and his helpers: Mary Adams, Radima Bazorkina, Inger Hyper Della Yilmaz, Marie-‐Liesse de Geloes, Gosia Galek, Carolyn Guven (coordination), and Arzu Abusoglu (sponsorship). The cakes have been decorated beautifully on the Winter Bazaar day by the skilled hands of our children, with help of Serap Albayrak, Meliha Ozkan, and Unnati Mehrotra.
Singalong
We owe our big thanks to the lovely volunteers: a soprano and her accompanist, Christa Fuelster and Hande Akkan, and to our prodigy pianist Alara Coban for an hour of wonderful music. Their concert reminded us that the time of giving is indeed coming.
Giving Tree
Thanks to your generosity, our Student Council under direction of Lindsey Pembridge and Hana Moualla, have made many children in need happy in time for the festive season. The motoric/developmental skills toys were delivered to the center for children with the Down syndrome, DoST Yaşam Down Sendromu Vakfı, and lots of other fun new and used toys found their new child owners at a local orphanage, Tarlabaşı Toplum Merkezi.
All the BISI children had the opportunity to give a gift and to get a lovely personally handmade Christmas Tree decoration in return. Well done all around.
Sinterklaas
Sinterklaas has visited our Etiler campus straight from the Netherlands with his helper “Zwarte Piet” Basia. Everyone got to do the Sinterklaas move and eat real “kruidnoten”.
Newcomers
Please, do not hesitate to contact any of the PTA board members to help settle into the new school, get involved in the Spring school activities, or call 0537 049 2200 for help.
Teachers Appreciation Day
Our Class Parents have organized for a lovely set of appreciation gifts for all teachers. We are all very thankful for their time and creativity to make this day special. On behalf of the whole PTA, our teachers have been treated to a cake from the famous Pera Palace Hotel to accompany their coffee break, while Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts helped around.
Opportunities for volunteering with the PTA
All parents and teachers at BISI are automatically members of the Parent Teacher Association, the PTA. Our meetings are open to all, and active members are welcome to join in any time. The school has been so kind as to communicate place and time of the PTA meetings via their sms/email system. Please, contribute to the benefit of our children.
Best regards,
City Campus PTA.
