Information

AimThe course is intended to provide an overview of internal and external corrosion and failure of pipelines by cracking mechanisms. Delegates will be introduced to the different internal and external corrosion mechanisms and the methods of deciding which corrosion mechanism is most relevant to inline and spot inspection findings. The course is also intended as a foundation for the special inline inspection tracks of the Pipeline Technology Conference.

The course aims to provide pipeline engineers with an awareness of the op-tions available for corrosion monitoring and corrosion control using a risk-based approach.

Target GroupManagers and engineers responsible for pipeline integrity, pipeline engineers and technicians from the operators, design engineering consultant companies and service companies. Personnel from the regulatory authorities and certification bodies involved with pipeline inspection and assessment and licensing may also be interested.

Course Content

1 Corrosion Statistics forPipelinesIntroducing the course with dis-cussion of the different corrosion patterns and statistics that occur in full well stream flowlines, interfiled lines, trunklines and main oil and gas pipelines.

2 Internal Corrosion MechanismsBrief overview of the operating parameters that are relevant to general internal corrosion, pitting corrosion and crack-ing including factors related to linepipe fabrication.

3 External Corrosion MechanismsOverview of the factors that are relevant to external corrosion and stress corrosion cracking including the nature of soils, coating defects, field joints and cathodic protection systems.

4 Corrosion Risk AssessmentStandard methods of evaluat-ing corrosion risk by sampling, intrusive and non-intrusive monitoring and surveying of the pipelines. Relationship of corro-sion risk with inline inspection.

5 Corrosion ControlStandard practices for control of corrosion in the various pipe-lines including procedures for optimum use of corrosion inhibi-tors and biocides. Limitations of present technology.

Lecturer

Lecturer

Dr. Roger A. King, United Kingdom

Dr King has worked in the oil and gas industry for over forty years. Trained as a chemical engineer he received his Master´s degree in Corrosion Science and Engineering and his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester, UK. After a senior technical role in the international microbiological corrosion group at Manchester he joined the university industrial unit with responsibility for establishing a research and development group to serve the nascent UK offshore oil industry.

In 1989 he left academe to work as an independent consultant and as such has worked with many operators and ma-jor contractors in the design and construction of onshore and offshore oil and gas fields throughout the world and in establishing corrosion philosophies for major national operators.

Dr King has published over 100 technical papers and co-authored a textbook on Subsea Pipeline Engineering with Dr Andrew Palmer. He has presented novel engineering solutions to corrosion problems at international conferences and given courses on corrosion awareness, cathodic protection, microbiological corrosion, water injection systems, onshore pipeline engineering, subsea pipeline engineering and defect analysis.

Other work involved the development of a materials and corrosion module for the pipeline engineering course offered by the University of Northumberland; expert witness in cases where corrosion issues had to be evaluated; and assistance in establishing The Qualification Panel for the pipeline industry.
