The PU item was prone to problems of stick-slip, necessitating the addition of oil to the assembly, and an expensive rubber gaiter to prevent seepage. Railko's material, coded ~~80, has eliminated the need for oil, and allowed the use of a cheaper gaiter. A printer-head chassis for Unisys Burroughs in France, originally in die cast aluminium with bronze and steel components - 48 in all - has been redesigned with only 10 parts using mouldings in a PTFE-filled, glass-reinforced Lexan polycarbonate. The PTFE is used to overcome frictional problems and it is the first time this Lexan material has been used in Europe. One special feature is integral bushings on the chassis; cost savings on the part have been around $60-70. A special masterbatch of carbon black in high density polyethy- lene formulated by Cabot Plastics Europe provides long-term pro- tection against ultraviolet radiation in HDPE geogrids used to reinforce engineering structures with design lives as long as 120 yrs.
