Dear OMHS Families, Happy Spring from your PTSA! We have been working hard to plan the Project S.A.F.E. after prom party. With the help of our generous parents, OMHS alumni and the local community, this should be a fabulous time. All students and their guests attending prom are invited to this party to take part in the free food, games and amazing prizes! Senior students that choose not to attend prom may also take part in this event. Our goal is to keep all of our students S.A.F.E! We are hopeful that parents of all prom attendees will encourage their kids to enjoy this Substance, Abuse Free Environment party. Did you know that the week of May 1st is Teacher Appreciation Week? The PTSA will be catering a staff luncheon on May 3rd to show our fantastic staff how much they are appreciated! Lastly, as the final quarter of school rolls around, we hope that par- ents keep in mind that the OMHS PTSA always needs your support. Membership drives will resume in August. With your membership and contributions, we can continue to do great things for our students and teachers here at OMHS! MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Greetings OMHS Families, Spring has finally arrived as we wind down for the year, and we are looking forward to a strong finish for all staff and students. Once again, the Owings Mills High School Community is celebrating national recognition in being ranked among the nation’s top high schools by both The Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report. Such a distinction is due in no small part to the hard work and dedication of our students, families, and staff. Congratula-tions! The Third Marking Period has been busy as usual with numerous student and staff accom-plishments:

News From the Nurse

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS Every year one in four kids will sustain an injury that requires medical attention. Forty percent of all injury related emergency room visits and 42% of all injury deaths happen between May and August. We can keep kids free from about 90% of these accidents by educating ourselves and our kids on how to stay safe during summer vacation.

1. Bites and Stings – Planning to spend time outside means planning to spray yourself with insect

repellent – repellents don’t kill insects, but they can help reduce bites from mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and other bothersome bugs.

2. Ticks – Outdoorsy types aren’t the only ones who need to worry about ticks – you could pick one

up in your own yard while gardening or playing outside. Be vigilant with tick checks. 3. Pool Safety – Follow all rules of the pool. No running, Never swim alone. Never leave children

unattended in the pool. No horseplay in or around pool area. 4. Playground Safety – Check the equipment before letting kids play. Make sure the child’s clothing

is playground safe(no loose strings or clothing) 5. Safe Rides – Wear a helmet and safety equipment when riding a bike, skateboarding or skating.

Make sure your bike is the right size for your child. 6. Poison Ivy – Poison ivy, sumac, and oak contains an oil called urushiol, which when it comes

into contact with skin, causes an allergic reaction in about 85% of the population. The subse-quent rash that develops will only appear where the skin came in contact with the plant’s oil — and luckily, it isn’t contagious but it can be spread thru indirect contact (such as petting a dog that has run through poisonous plants). Home treatment is often recommended.

7. Food Poisoning – One of the best ways to avoid food poisoning during the summer months is

to be sure food items that contain mayonnaise, milk, eggs, meat, poultry, and seafood aren’t kept at room temperature for more than an hour or two.

8. Heat-related Illness – Staying hydrated in hot weather can help reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Stay in a shady or air-conditioned location during the hottest parts of the afternoon.

9. Hydration – If you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already mildly dehydrated. When outside it is rec-

ommended you drink 5 oz of fluid about every 20 minutes. 10. Sunburn – Regardless of age and skin type it is recommended that everyone, apply a water-

resistant sunscreen every day of the year. Getting one blistering sunburn when you’re a child, doubles your chances of developing a melanoma.

Remember these 10 easy safety rules and have a safe, happy, healthy summer.

Trevonn Gyles, Eddie Cashman and Ezra Rubenfeld competed in the 60th an-nual FBLA states competition over the weekend. There were 1,200 people in attendance. They competed in one of the most competitive categories, Sports and Entertainment Management. They took an hour and a half rigorous test and needed to place in the top 10 in order to compete in the live performance event. They placed in the top 10 and gave a stellar performance event in front of a panel of judges. All of their marketing and advertising knowledge, as well as their salesmanship paid off. The panel of judges were stunned! After much an-ticipation, they were awarded 1st place in the state.

Their intention is to go to Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia this summer. They are going to solicit donations from area businesses and create a go fund me ac-count.

Below is a picture of their excitement. Thank you Ms. Butler for the picture and for helping out with states.

Please congratulate them if you get a chance!

Lateness to School Students are encouraged to develop good habits of prompt attendance. Lateness to school is a Category 1 offense, according to the Baltimore County Behavior Handbook. Students must be in their seats at 7:25 a.m. Attendance

Regular school attendance has a positive affect on learning and helps to establish habits necessary for responsible adulthood. Therefore, a great emphasis is placed on the encouragement of consistent school at-tendance. A student absent from school must present a note to the homeroom teacher within 3 days upon re-turning to school. The written note must include the name of the student, signature of parent/guardian, con-tact number, date(s) of and reason for the absence. Ab-sences not supported by a note will be considered unex-cused. Visitation

NOTE: When visiting school, all parents must register at the school office and receive a visitor’s pass. Teachers will be instructed by the principal to refrain from conferring with anyone who does not have a visi-tor’s pass. This action is absolutely necessary in order for us to maintain security in our building so that the students and teachers are protected from trespassers. Drop-in visits to classes are not permitted. Teachers are allowed a 24 hour notice. Flowers, Balloons and Fast Foods Parents and friends should not send flowers, balloons or bring in fast foods to students at school. The delivery of these items is disruptive to the educa-tional program.

Telephone Messages for Students It is not possible for our secretarial staff to re-lay telephone messages to students during the school day. If there is an emergency situation that requires contact with a student, the situation will be handled by an administrator. Remember students are not allowed to be on cell phones from 7:25 a.m. to 1:55 p.m. Bikes and Skateboards We are pleased to provide bike racks for a lim-ited number of students. However, we cannot be re-sponsible for the security of any bikes, but do expect students to provide themselves with a secure lock and chain for their own protection. Parents are reminded that students should wear a helmet when riding a bike. Skateboards are not allowed in the building. They are not considered a form of transportation and must be left at home. Lockers On Wednesday, August 24, during homeroom, teachers will assign lockers . The Baltimore County Public School System has installed permanent locks on hall lockers. All locks and lockers in the school are pro-vided for the use and convenience of the students and are subject to inspection by authorized personnel.
