THE COPPER IN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 7The latest tranche of awards sponsored by the Copper Development Association (CDA) represents a major swingtowards recognition of significant architectural designs incorporating copper. This move is a response to thegrowing use by British architects of copper as a versatile and sustainable material in both contemporary andtraditional architecture.

For the first time, CDA has instigated awards for the best recently completed buildings, anywhere in the •worlddesigned by a UK based architectural practice, incorporating copper roofing, cladding or other external detailing. Aseparate award has also been included for recently completed projects demonstrating innovation in a specific areaof particular relevance today. Submitted projects were assessed from drawings and photographs by three judgesfrom a panel of architects at the forefront of British design: Graeme Sutherland of the Bartlett School ofArchitecture, Laurence Bain of Michael Wilford and Partners, and Trevor Clapp of Paskin Kynakides Sands.

Twenty projects were submitted for these awards, including several already critically acclaimed buildings, fromwhich the following awards were made.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN -WINNERVENUS, LONDONReplacing a distinctive but tatty light

industrial property at the end of a 19th century terrace,Venus (named after its garment manufacturerpredecessor) is a unique multi-purpose studio/housedesigned by Chance de Silva Architects who overcameprotracted problems with both planners and bankers. Thecascade of copper rolling over a defensive brick groundfloor elevation with •watch-tower strip glazing, opening upthe higher level interiors, borrows from Japanesearchitecture but also presents a strong, modernindividuality. The architect judges chose it for itspersonality, response to its landlocked site, use ofprefabricated elements and sinuous form which could onlybe achieved this successfully with copper. Venus wasconsidered a clear and unanimous winner for theseawards.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN -COMMENDEDDUNDEE CONTEMPORARYARTS

Although partially re-using previous brick warehouses, this is a thoroughly contemporary building which iscentral to the cultural reidentification of Dundee. Theuse of light to entice visitors into the building and inviteinvolvement in the activities on offer is central toRichard Murphy Architects' design philosophy. Thearchitectural language used throughout is one ofoverlapping or "sliding" planes of different - and clearlyidentified - materials, of which copper cladding forms anessential part. The judges recognised this single mindeduse of materials, carried through to the end with carefuldetailing and enabling compositional excellence to beachieved, with a Commendation for ArchitecturalDesign.

ARCHITECTURALINNOVATION AWARDGREAT EASTERN HOTEL,LONDON

Refurbishment of this listed, turn of the century monolithhas had little impact on its exterior - with the exception ofits roofscape which presented a major challenge toarchitects Manser Associates. Here, a chaotic mishmash ofone and two storey structures has been replaced with aunified, copper-clad structure providing up to 3 storeyaccommodation -which links the various towers, turrets andother roof-top features of the original building. The judgeswere not only impressed with this innovative handling of alandmark building but also the utilisation of copper as aunifying material for cladding, flashings, traditional dormerwindows and the distinctive cylindrical dormers punchingthrough the mansard form. The use of diagonally laidcopper shingles, acting as a rain screen over a single plymembrane, was also considered to be an unusual, contemporary use of this well-established material.

THE JOHN SMITH AWARDS FOR CRAFTSMANSHIPWhile recognising the importance of architectural design, CDA believes that it is essential to maintain high standardsof craftsmanship •which are central to the traditions of copper in architecture - and •which architects continue to relyupon for the realisation of their designs. Consequently, the John Smith Awards for Craftsmanship continue torecognise exceptional -workmanship by contractors on recently completed buildings •with copper roofs and cladding, irrespective of their architecture. A separate panel of judges has been selected for this purpose: Terry Atkins, SeniorPlumbing Lecturer at the Oxford College of Further Education, Martin James, Editor of 'Roofing Cladding andInsulation' and Kean Power, Roofing advisor to CDA.

Six projects were short listed by the judges and visited for detailed inspection, resulting in the following awards.CRAFTSMANSHIP -HIGHLYCOMMENDED EQUITABLEHOUSE, LONDONAdjoining a previous Copper Roofing

Awards winner, this project is surmounted by largecurved copper roofs. Again, a bull-nosed eaves line ismaintained with concealed gutters and coppervertical cladding used for continuity. The judgesconsidered that a high quality of workmanship by TR Freeman has been carried throughout the projectwith particular care taken over details such as thecurved standing seam hip.

CRAFTSMANSHIP -COMMENDEDBELL TOWER, BASILDON

This fully glazed, free standing structure is cappedwith a curved, tapering copper roof. To achieve thisdeceptively simple form, Boss Metals have usedhorizontal panels of pre-patinated copper meetingvertically orientated batten rolls. The judges wereparticularly impressed with the care given to detailinginto tight cusps between window heads.

THE COPPER IN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 8Looking to the future, CDA •will continue to develop the awards for architectural design and is keen toinclude examples of overseas projects by British architects and unbuilt projects to be judged from drawings.Entries are now invited for the next awards which will have the following categories:

Architectural Design Award - Built ProjectsRecently completed buildings anywhere in the world designed by a UK based architectural practice, incorporating copper roofing, cladding or other external detailing.

Architectural Design Award - Unbuilt Projects Design projects incorporating copper externally, prepared by UK based architects and students of architecture.

Discretionary Innovation Award Recently completed projects demonstrating innovation ina specific area of particular relevance today.

The John Smith Award for Craftsmanship Recognising exceptional workmanship by contractors on recentlycompleted copper roofs, irrespective of architectural design.

CRAFTSMANSHIP - WINNERTHORNBURY CENTRE,BRADFORD

This thoroughly contemporary design by Allan JoyceArchitects includes sinusoidal double curved roofs andnumerous difficult details. A clear, rounded eaves line ismaintained by use of concealed gutters while copper downpipes and flashings to masonry are incorporated forcontinuity of material. The judges considered the qualityand neatness of copper •workmanship, carried out byLongworth Metal Roofing, to be outstanding throughoutall areas of this large, complex project. In particular, theywere impressed with the flatness of copper sheetmaintained on curved surfaces and the elegant execution ofcomplex details at verge and eaves junctions. The projectwas recognised as a clear winner and excellent example ofcopper craftsmanship in today's architecture.
