EVERYONE PLAYS A ROL

THE STUDENT TEAM

At K12 partner schools like CAVA, your child has the benet o apower ully effective student team—a collaboration betweenteachers, counselors, senior school leadership, the schoolcommunity, and you. In act, as a parent, your role is so importantwe call you the “Learning Coach.”

Members o the student team work hand in hand, providing support, encouragement, and care. Together, we inspire your child to believein his or her own abilities—removing barriers to reaching thepotential within.

The difference with K 12 is “dramatic,” says Laurel Barrette, K 12 director o school counseling programs. “Too many kids get put ina box. Students may be tracked into one group with one level ocourses, even i their strengths vary by subject. I they do get placedin a more appropriate mix o Honors and non-Honors courses, astigma can be attached to the so-called easier courses.

“A really important thing we’re able to do at K 12 is look at theindividual student in an accepting, open-minded way. We’re able

to put together a customized plan and meet kids’ needs, withoutthem having to worry about what other people think.”

THE K 12

PROGRAM

CAVA uses the award-winning K 12 curriculum that’s been createdby cognitive scientists, interactive designers, and master teachers—many with advanced degrees. Decades o research about howchildren learn are combined with rich, dynamic content to makelearning come alive.

This methodology incorporates everything rom engaging audio, video, and illustrations to animated demonstrations and learninggames. Each course is designed to be online rom the outset, unlikeother curriculum providers that ofen scan a textbook and call it“online education.” Subject matter is care ully sequenced so that,

rom one grade to the next, students build new knowledge uponthe strong oundations o what they’ve already learned.

To address a variety o learning styles, K 12 integrates hands-onmaterials with online lessons—books, math manipulatives, maps, art supplies, and more, particularly in early grades. Plus, mastery-based assessments are built right into the K–8 curriculum, to conrmstudents’ understanding o material. All course content meets orexceeds state and national standards.

It all comes together in the Online School (OLS), where students canlog in to their daily lessons, submit assignments, join a live web class,or reach out to their teachers or extra help. Easy-to-use planningand communication tools in the OLS let parents adjust scheduling, monitor progress, and stay in control.

ELEMENTARY &

MIDDLE SCHOOLOur K–8 program taps into children’s naturalinquisitiveness, with courses that truly engageyoung minds and reinforce key concepts inmeaningful ways.

Each grade includes the our core subjects—language arts, math, science, and social studies—along with music and art, plus worldlanguage options beginning in third grade. Courses are exibly paced, allowing students to move at the speed that best suits their needs. Those who are ready to move on to the next lesson or unit can do so,while those who require just a little more time may take it.

Nearly all courses are complemented by a wealth o hands-onmaterials you’d nd in a traditional classroom, including illustratedchildren’s stories, ash cards, counting blocks, magni ying glasses, inatable globes, tambourines, paintbrushes, rock and mineral kits, and much more. Plus, the standard math courses in K–5 and a readingremediation course or grades 3–5 eature the latest “adaptive”technology that intelligently adjusts to your child’s skill level, offeringpractice where it’s needed most.

As your child’s Learning Coach in grades K–5, you’ll typically spend 3 to 6hours per day working side-by-side with your student, helping acilitate hisor her progress through the lessons. You’ll also have the close support oyour online teacher via e-mail, phone, and one-to-one online meetings.

In grades 6–8, the Learning Coach’s role adjusts to approximately 1 to4 hours per day, as students grow more independent and rely more ontheir teachers or instructional support.

Our program for grades 9–12 is highlyindividualized to students’ abilities in eachsubject, as well as their developing interests.

The K 12 high school curriculum eatures more than 150 courses to help

teens chart a personal course to success:

→ All o the core subjects: English, math, social studies, and science

→ Two world language options: Spanish and French

→ Career-building electives, including the latest science, technology, business, and liberal arts elds: web design, marketing, economics, journalism, public speaking, art history, and more

We also offer multiple academic levels to meet diverse needs:

→ Core courses break down topics and develop study skills

→ Comprehensive courses involve more writing and analysis

→ Honors courses demand even greater independence

→ College-level Advanced Placement ® courses prep or AP exams

→ Credit recovery courses help those who didn’t pass a subject initially

Courses are taught by Cali ornia-credentialed teachers certied in

their subjects, so the parent’s role shifs to that o a mentor, providingmoral support, attendance reporting, and progress verication. Moreinstruction happens through live “ClassConnect” sessions. Teachersalso hold online office hours or extra one-to-one support.

Yes, the program will push your high school student, but only tomaximize success on his or her path. We won’t judge the path, butwe will judge the effort—and expect hard work and determination.

For students seeking more challenge, we offermany ways to kindle the spark of learning.

For grades K–8, the K 12 Advanced Learner Program (ALP) has beendeveloped in alignment with guidelines rom the National Association

or Gifed Children. Through the program’s online National LearningCircles, children investigate topics that help enhance reading, writing, research, and critical thinking skills. This includes everything rom LEGOrobotics to competing in the “Brain Olympics.”

Students can also participate in the ALP Book Club and receiveadditional direct instruction ocused on enrichment. In particular, ALPlanguage arts lessons let students collaborate and dig deeper withother advanced learners.

The exibility o the K 12 program means that any student can beplaced at his or her ability level in courses, as opposed to grade level. For example, a gifed third grader might pursue math at an acceleratedpace, while an advanced teen can take Honors American Literature.

In addition to 15 Honors courses, the K 12 high school curriculum includes19 college-level AP options. These courses prepare students to takeAdvanced Placement exams or college credit. Choices range rom APCalculus, English Literature, Physics, U.S. History, and Spanish to morespecialized subjects like AP Art History and Computer Science.

CAVA also offers a concurrent enrollment program that allowsstudents—including new enrollees—to take courses through acommunity college with pro essors on campus. Students can earncollege and high school credit. Those interested must quali y. Manycommunity colleges offer ree tuition or high school students; CAVAreimburses science and ne art subjects.
