Whydidthatmeetingtakeplace?

Becausethestrategicdevelopmentplan,madeasadraft

byRBOIwasnotsatisfactorytoalotofcitizensfromStatia.

RBOI

is

a

spatial

planning

bureau

from

Rotterdam.

They

wereappointedbytheexecutivecounciltomakeastrate

gicaldevelopmentplanandaspatialplan.

Explanation:Statianeedsspatialplanning.Everybody

agreeswiththat,becausewithoutaspatialplanthatgives

destinationstopartsoftheisland,thereisnocontrolover

buildingactivities.

Statianeedstoworkoninfrastructure.Thisisalocalaffair.

Tomakeaspatialplanisalsoalocalaffair.

Now,youcantmakeaspatialplanoutoftheblue.You

havetohaveknowledgeaboutthewayyourislandisgoing

DecembertheycameupwiththreescenariosforStatias

socialeconomicdevelopment;AtouristicStatia,aninno

vativeStatiaandaStatiafortheStatians.Thecomments

andinputthatcamefromthatmeetingwereusedto

makeafinalstrategicdevelopmentplan.

TheypresentedthatplaninMarch,andtheexecutive

councildidnotapprovewiththisplan.Theydecidedto

continuestill

and

they

did

have

atownhallmeeting

about

thisplan.Atthatmeetingitwasclearthatthisplanisnot

whatthepeopleofStatiaexpected.

Thatswhyanalternativetownhallmeetingwashelda

fewdayslater,initiatedbyagroupofconcernedciti

zens. Thepeoplethatattendedthatmeeting(77per

sons)gaveamandatetothisgroupofconcernedcitizens.

Itwassuggestedthattheyusetheresultsfromthework

shopthatwasheldin2007aboutthemattertomakean

alternativeplan.

Thesamegroupofconcernedcitizensspokewiththe

domesticcommittee(seepage9)andnowtheplanning

bureauand

the

island

council

agree

upon

this

delay

in

the

process.

ThecitizensofStatiahavebeengivenextratimetowork

onabetterstrategicdevelopmentplanthatcanbeasolid

foundationforthemakingofaspatialplan.

Butgovernmentcomplainsthattheynevergototownhall

meetings.

IfyouareuncertainaboutthewayyouspeakproperEnglish,

becauseyouneverhadtraininginEnglishinschool,itsonly

naturalthatyoudontwanttospeakinpublic.

ofadditional

nutrients

for

our

vegetable

plants

and

fruit

trees!

Ihaveneverheardanyonesaythatthedumpisnotaprob

lemonStatia. Howevermostpeopleseemtothinkthat

dealingwiththisproblemisjusttheGovernment'srespon

sibility.Ithinkthatitisalsoeachperson'sresponsibility

andacivicduty.

MyhusbandandIcametoStatiaonasailboat.Wewere

requiredtohaveawrittenWasteManagementPlan.Statia

isabit

like

abig

boat.

We

have

to

be

conscious

of

our

trash.

Believeitornot,myhusbandandIhavereducedourtrash

byabout75%bydoingthefollowingthings. Youmaynot

beabletodoallofthesethings,butyoucanprobablydoat

leastoneofthem.Ormaybeyouhaveotherideasthat

workbetterforyou.

TheimportantthingistothinkaboutitandDOit.Ifyou

builditintoyourdailyroutine,youwon'tnoticemuchaddi

tionaltimeforit.

1.Weputasealedcontainerinourkitchenforcompost

kitchenwasteandacontainerinthebathroomforpaperwasteandemptytheminthecompostpile.
