A MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR to each of the 1706 members of our World

Bank Group staff as well as to our Executive Directors and their Alternates-and Mrs Woods joins in these good wishes

We come to the close of another eventful year and all concerned may be proud of the results achieved There

are many kinds of service a man can render and all forms of servke are worthwhile But we in the Bank Group are I think particularly fortunate in being able to cast our net broadly- in being able to be helpful on a truly world scale Participation in the work of the Bank IDA and IFC

is thus an immensely enriching experience We continue to accumulate knowledge and to achieve greater undershystanding of the problems of development and their variashytions and interrelationships around the world Perhaps most important of all after twenty-one years of operating experience we are increasingly a coordinated team which has learned to be tolerant and even humble in the face of some of the intractable problems of development finance

The World Bank Group I believe can look forward to an ever larger and more effective role in helping member countries to approach and meet their development goals

A special greeting and welcome to the 279 staff memshy

bers who joined our organizations in 1967-and a special word of thanks and congratulations to the 108 veterans who have been with the Bank from the beginning

Again a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to all

Homes and public buildings all burst forth with evergreen decorations and candlelit windOvs at Christmas

If you have once experienced the qu iet charm of Williamsburg you will have no trouble envisioning what the celebration of Christmas there would be like We are sometimes troubled by the commershycialism that creeps in at this season and it is comforting to find a place where traditional feelings and customs have not been forgotshyten Many Washingtonians including some staff members succumb to the spell of tu rn ing the clock back to the eighteenth centu ry They travel the 150 miles--a beautiful drive almost all the way-to Williamsburg wf1ere without knowing just when it happens they become a part of an earlier era The restoration of Williamsburg has done more than preserve the customs of the period It revives the spirit of good fellowship of men alienated from their mother coun shytry constantly challenged in their quest for a new life It is the discovery of this spirit that gives Williamsburg its special appeal And doubly so at Christmas

An evening walk down Duke of Gloucester Street during the Christmas season recalls scenes from the past in the glow of candles lit one by one when the torchlight parade passes This is known in Williamsburg as the Grand Illumination and begins two weeks of Yuletide events which continue through January 1 You hear the good wishes of friends and the sound of carols The music is not a dream for strolling minstrels and carolers are still a part of the festivities

Wreaths and garlands of pine lau rei and fresh fruit decorate the inside and outside of homes and shops of Williamsburg and are beautiful reminders that natures beauty is not easily outshone And there is the scent of Christmas everywhere

There are many things to do Take the children along and let them enjoy amusements such as lawn bowling dancing racing pie-eating contests and climbing the greased pole If this reminder is taken seriously you may put it on the calendar for 1968 because Christmas at Williamsburg is a season not a day You will need to be there several days before Christmas to see Rumplestilskin the Marionette Show Young bankers seven to eleven may go on the Tricorn Hat Tour any day from two days before Christmas through New Years Day but not on Christmas Day If you wish to be there for the Firing of the Christmas Guns then make for Market Square at 3 00 pm on December 23

Costumed carolers serenade

throughout the Historic Area

~

More than one Yule Log is brought in at Williamsburg One we were told about is so big it takes two men to carry it The log is decorated and hidden in the woods and several days before Christshymas a party goes out singing carols to find the log The lucky caroler who spots the log gets a small reward The log is sawed in half blessed and one half is burned that day The other half is saved for Christmas Eve

Visiting the craft shops in Williamsburg is pleasant and intriguing at any time of year but at Christmas time you may visit them on special evenings both before and after Christmas by Ianthorn light

In Colonial Williamsburg the exchange of gifts was not customary Only Christmas boxes were filled with bits and small coins for the servants However we do have the notation that A thoughtful guest might send ahead a Virginia ham to his host

As you sit before a table groaning under the weight of roast beef wild turkey goose duck venison plum pudding and mincemeat with little effort you visualize the early citizens gathered at the festive table and you feel their contentment at the shared accompUshments in shaping their community the brotherhood of honest toil the celebration of thankfulness for the true meaning of Christmas

When New Years Day is past and gone Christmas is with some people done But further some will it extend And at Twelfth Day their Christmas end Some people stretch it further yet At Candlemas they finish it The gentry carry it fu rther still And finish it just when they will They drink good wine and eat good cheer And keep their Christmas all the Year

l Following are reviews of recent books submitted by the Library Commitshy

tee

Esme Benjamin reports on The King by Morlan Cooper

After taking quite a few chapters to get off the ground this book turned out to be a repetition of The Arrangement J also think I detected some of Valley of the Dolls except that Mr Cooper puts drinking in place of pill taking But even though this book is a combination of the plots of two other books (or perhaps because it is) I was not impressed

In a nutshell the story is about a rags-to-riches singer who devotes the earlier part of his career to song women and wine and the latter part to wine women politics and trying to right the wrongs of the earlier part However he does not succeed sufficiently at any of these attempts

I read this book through to a literal bitter end hoping to find a surprise or two but after reading it I found the whole story on the blurb inside the jacket

c J Martin reviews Janus Island by Sloan Wilson

This novel I place in the s category-a story of strain and stress resultshying in successive sex often in sordid surroundings systematic sipping of spirits supersonic smashes and stark stupidity to which have been added here snooping sadism and shark orgies The story is about a TV writer (Ben Powers) recently divorced who has a rich and more than eccentric friend who always wants to win at everything and recruits Ben to help him Ben feels lonely remembers a girl he met at a party telephones her and spends most of the remaining pages with her-often in amorous postures It is light reading but more than a little far fetched The authors descrrptions of the sea sailing techniques and Florida island scenery bear a stamp of authenticity I have my doubts about the rest

The Espionage Establishment by David Wise and Thomas B Ross

A summary of information otherwise scattered through many books magazine articles and newspaper reports If you are an avid reader of spy cases you will be merely reminded of what you have read before but it is interesting

Linda Owens regarding Topaz by Leon Uris

I waited with great expectations to have the chance to read a new work by the author of Exodus and Armageddon As I progressed through one chapter after another disappointment mounted Mr Uris is attempting to take advantage of the current popularity of spy stories and spins his plot on the flimsy cliches of United StatesFrench antagonism Not only the authors sympathies are transparent-his plot is too However a thinking man may wish to delve a little cioser into the career of a certain general as a result of reading Topaz
