1 Dear Parents June 2018 As we move towards the end of this term, I am writing to update you on a number of activities within the school in the usual eclectic fashion. Naturally, this has been an extremely important term for those taking public examinations the results of which will be released on Thursday 16 August for A levels and Thursday 23 August for GCSE. The IB results will be released next week. All of our pupils are fully aware of the method by which these results may be accessed and some may need to be in contact with the school on those days. One of the ways in which we seek to motivate pupils to give of their best in the academic sphere is through the Academic Honour Roll which reflects excellent Effort and Attainment in the academic sphere. Whilst it is by no means easy to achieve placement on the Academic Honour Roll, the criteria are not so difficult to meet in that it is beyond most pupils to achieve such a placement. Being on the Academic Honour Roll is, therefore, entirely within the reach of a pupil who is dedicated to his/her work, is well-organised, is proactive in preparing for lessons, follows up issues which are not understood and presents work on time.

Dear Parents June 2018 As we move towards the end of this term, I am writing to update you on a number of activities within the school in the usual eclectic fashion. Naturally, this has been an extremely important term for those taking public examinations the results of which will be released on Thursday 16 August for A levels and Thursday 23 August for GCSE. Whilst it is by no means easy to achieve placement on the Academic Honour Roll, the criteria are not so difficult to meet in that it is beyond most pupils to achieve such a placement. The Clark Cups are awarded to the highest scoring Boys’ House and Girls’ House respectively in terms of academic effort over the term; these go to No. 9 for the boys and No. 6 for the girls. I note that No. 6 have won the cup for the last three terms which I am sure has pleased their outgoing Housemistress, Mrs Vanessa Young, enormously. The Lower Sixth Leadership Group (Chapel Prefects, Heads and Deputy Heads of Houses and School Council) have impressed Mr Lewis Faulkner (Deputy Head: Pastoral), Mrs Penny Bijl (DSL) and Mrs Sarah Angus (Senior Deputy Head) during their evening leadership training sessions this term. Their training has involved discussing issues which they may encounter in the course of their leadership as well as examining safeguarding and pastoral scenarios and they have already put some of their learning

into practice in guiding and welcoming the incoming FY pupils who joined us for a BBQ last Sunday. The pupil “Thrive” group has been another successful initiative this term in which some twenty pupils have met weekly under the guidance of Mr Faulkner and Mr Adam Hutsby to explore ways in which they can take a lead on pastoral issues within the school. They contributed some good ideas towards our kindness week and have been reviewing issues such as the House buddy system, the life skills programme and the induction programme for new pupils. The Caswell Cup was first presented in 1987 and is an annual award to the pupil who produces, in the course of the year, the best creative writing. Congratulations to Annabelle Moody for being the 2018 winner.

Another avenue for pupil leadership in the realm of pastoral care lies in the Peer Mentor programme . Forty-seven pupils in the Hundred and Lower Sixth underwent several months’ training in order to be able to provide practical help to younger pupils in such areas as time management, organisation, problem solving and overall support. My thanks go to the following Peer Mentors who have made themselves available to help others: Jasmine Jain, Tia Tanna, Bianca Gaeta, Stephanie Bitature and Melissa Shorter (Ellerslie House); Ethan Zhao, Noa Kotsikas, Temidola Shonubi, James Wakefiled and Ethan Wang (No. 1); Jasper Penrice, Tassilo Ritter von Kempski, Bosa Gubago, Tom Doherty and Henry Queen (No. 2); Natsumi Nakamura, Djazia Spowers, Nathalia Prior and Mallika Prakash (No. 3); Imogen Cole, Lucie Gonder, Gemma Luscombe, Ellie Blyth, Natasha Cook and Ariana Davison (No. 4); Nicholas Horn, Kit Saxton, Sean Aggarwal, Ben Merritt, Max Pickering, Max Regan and Owen Carroll (No. 5); Giulia Buttiglione, Poppy Underwood, Maria Decio, Georgina Denham, Leonie Soravia and Francesca Hsu (No. 6); Jonathan Asamoah, George White, Harry Bluck, Sebastian Corry and Vishal Koneru (No. 7); Georgina Hartley, Imee Marriott, Annabelle Moody, Amber Anderson, Daria Di Michele, Saskia Griffiths and Brianna

Yung (No. 8); Oliver Cook, Harvey Freeman, Dino Abduljawad, Charles Izzard, Jamie Bitenyo-Jones, Edward Mayell and Nick Yeoward (No. 9); Hans Baare-Schmidt, Daniel Brierley, Hamish Houghton, Monty Lampard and Philip van Nederpelt (SH). A further opportunity for leadership in the junior year groups is on the Lower School Council. Congratulations to these pupils who will represent their peers on this body: Charlie Canton-Smith and Tendo Kauma (SH); Rehaan Edavalath and Vansh Ladwa (No. 1); Jack Bedford and Adam Narbeth (No. 2); Sophie Roberts and Maissa de Oliveira (No. 3); Bella Cole and Lucia Paris Meseguer (No. 4); Angus Catto and Louis Staley (No. 5); Kitty Holroyd, Emily Elgar and Banita Dodhia (No. 6); Zach Watson and Daniel Cheng (No. 7); Jemima Martyn-Smith, Maddie Queen and Hattie Sibthorpe (No. 8); Floris Tjan, Johnnie Stephenson and James Francis (No. 9) and Syuzanna Avanesova and Chioma Anazodo (EH). The George Washington Book Award recognises younger pupils who embody the spirit and drive of George Washington in terms of academic prowess, leadership outside of the classroom, diversity of thought and the ability to put knowledge into action. This year, the award has been made to Dino Abduljawad. The FY engaged in a two-day project to develop their entrepreneurial and collaborative skills under the banner of Malvern Young Apprentice. The pupils were split into groups of four or five and the task was to create a company/brand name, produce a skin cream and lip balm, create a marketing campaign and business strategy to maximise profits as well as to develop advertising and packaging for the product. The idea was to develop a popular product as many pupils will use creams such as suncream and, having received some guidance on how to set up a business and work out costings, possible turnover and growth rates for the company, the group had to present their findings to a panel of senior staff. The overall purpose of the exercise was to promote entrepreneurship and, therefore, to give pupils a taste for business opportunities, whilst at the same time developing their knowledge of the scientific process involved in the creation of a particular product. Well done to Emilio Dorai Raj, Emily Elgar, Louisa Marsden-Smedley, Lara Davidson and Sophie Roberts for creating the “Aphrodite” range of cosmetics.

All FY girls took part in a workshop presented by a researcher at the James Dyson Foundation which aims at encouraging women to become engineers.

The FY Award comprised two expeditions, one of which was a four-day exercise on the Isle of Man. This is still underway as I write and will, hopefully, bring a successful year to a conclusion for our FY. The Remove had three days off timetable to work on a cross-curricular project on the theme of “Change”. Working in groups, pupils were required to investigate a period of dramatic change in one country and develop an understanding of how these changes influenced the arts, philosophy, design, economics and religion. The project culminated in each group creating an exhibition of their findings with a display, a synoptic poster and a powerpoint presentation before presenting their conclusions to the rest of the year group and a group of senior staff. Two students from each of our Houses in the Remove were involved in a LOST expedition last week. In short, the pupils were taken to a variety of different destinations equidistant from Malvern College and had to make their way back to the school using their own ingenuity. Each couple was under the surveillance of a member of staff for safety reasons and, overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable event. Congratulations to Jayda Khimiji and Chioma Anazodo from Ellerslie House who won this event and returned back to Malvern in only 14 hours.

Thirty-one pupils which included three qualifying groups for Duke of Edinburgh Award certificates and two training groups spent four days in North Wales walking for a minimum of eight hours a day with heavy rucksacks through wild country. This was no mean feat as even the roads appeared to be melting in the hottest weather in that region for several years. All of the staff and the assessor were extremely impressed by

the positive nature and achievement of all of those involved and our thanks go to Mr Phil Wastie and his staff team for their support for our pupils on these exercises.

Each year we run an Exchange Programme which is essentially aimed at pupils spending a portion of their summer holiday in a school in Australia, Japan, South Africa or Canada. The availability of places for such an exchange largely depends upon there being students in each of the various schools who are keen to ensure that a reciprocal arrangement is able to be engineered. Next year, we hope to have exchanges between Malvern and Tara Anglican School for Girls, Sydney (Remove girls); Knox Grammar School, Sydney (Remove boys); Musashi High School, Tokyo (Lower Sixth boys) and Okayama High School, Japan (Lower Sixth boys and girls). There is also a possibility of further exchanges and, if your sons or daughters are interested, they should make contact in September with Mr Jamie Russell who is our teacher overseeing this programme: [email protected] A project to sell named seats in the refurbished Rogers Theatre has been completed with all the seats now named; the work on the Theatre itself, will, take a little longer than expected to get it just right, but we hope that the project will be finished by half-term of the Autumn Term. In any event, the grand opening of the Theatre is only planned for early December. I would like to thank all those who have generously supported this project, including those who have named a seat in the auditorium and I very much look forward to seeing all your dedications in place. All the seats have now been named, but if you would like to become a part of the Theatre project in any other way, please contact Alexandra Albright, Head of Development, on +44 (0)1684 581607.

Congratulations to the pupils who performed so well in the Concerto Concert on Sunday: Ani King (violin), Tristan Hubbard (trumpet), Verity Manning-Cox (saxophone), Lucie Fletcher (voice), Ali Hawkins and Tom Luscombe (violin), Shea John (flute), Elise Black, Annie O’Gorman and Lauren Maxey (voice) performed with the backing of a professional orchestra and rose to the occasion under the baton of our Director of Music, Mr Jonathan Brown.

Well done, too, to those who performed in the Summer Serenade: Finley Morris, Harriet Carpenter, Johnnie Stephenson, Maissa De Oliveira, Bea Barnes, Jamie Hawkins, Cameron Eldridge, Josi Jebens, Jacob Perry, Missy Hingley, Kitty Holroyd, Ani King and Shea John. This was a very good way of welcoming our new musicians to Malvern. Our Lower School dramatists from the Remove and Foundation years presented Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales over two performances last week. Imaginatively staged in the round in the temporary drama studio, the cast and crew delivered a richly entertaining piece of story-telling theatre. Five traditional Grimm fairytales were retold with considerable theatrical wit, skill and verve, achieved through excellent collaboration from the entire ensemble. These were Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Three Snakes Leaves, Hans-my-Hedgehog and Hansel and Gretel. An appreciative audience saw impressive performances from Jack Yeoward, Ottie Thomas, Maissa De Oliveira, Louis Packham, Lottie Bulley, Ed Thurlow, Lara Davidson, Morgann McGee, Missy Hingley, Devon Perry, Lakshya Joshi, Rory Upton, Alex Inchbald, Delphine De Bokay, Sam Hughes, Jacob Perry, Cameron Eldridge, Oli Doherty, Syuzanna Avanesova, George McEwan, Hattie Sibthorpe, Bea Barnes, Jemima Martyn-Smith, Bella Cole, Saffy Wickes, Shareek Oluwo, Emily Elgar, Boo Forbes, Jasmine Ellis, Angus Catto, Charlie Canton-Smith, Ani King and Georgina Wood. Lighting and sound operations was by Basil Marsden-Smedley, Saskia Drake, Johnnie Stephenson and Daniel Cheng, with

Lawrence Hooker came second in the Boys’ intermediate 800m, Lewis McMurdo came second in the Boys’ intermediate Long Jump, whilst Urav Ladwa was placed third in the Boys’ intermediate shot put and long jump. Well done to Vivien Kruse who won the Girls’ intermediate shot put. In the English Schools’ Championships the following week, Vivien Kruse came seventh in the Girls’ intermediate shot put whilst Lawrence Hooker and Lewis McMurdo did well in the Boys’ intermediate 800m and long jump respectively.

• A number of members of our CCF attended a live fire shooting practice at Whittington range. There were a number of high scores and Mathew Bruce and Owen Carroll achieved the smallest overall groupings of the day. Eight Air Cadets visited Weston-Super-Mare Air Festival and saw a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, a display by the Red Arrows and an awe-inspiring series of aerobatics by the Eurofighter Typhoon.

• In Swimming Tom Cox competed in the Worcestershire County Relay Championships for the Ledbury and District Swimming Club and achieved fifth place in the Men’s 13/14 200m Medley and fourth place in the Men’s 13/14 200m Freestyle Relay. Well done to him!

• Our Junior Boys’ Tennis Teams have had an exceptional season going through unbeaten. Some of the toughest matches were against Cheltenham College where our A team won 5-4 with George Blackburn and Alexey Artemov leading the way. The team also beat Monmouth 6-0 with Felix Albert Strolz and Edmund Thurlow doing particularly well. In the match against Shrewsbury we managed a 6-3 win with George Blackburn, Alexey Artemov, George Batyrev and Charles Faujour all contributing very well. Our strong B team beat Cheltenham 8-1 and Shrewsbury 9-0. Well done to Charlie Clarke and Sam Phillips, Francesco Totaro, Jack Yeoward, Floris Tjan and Oliver Tulloch. Our First Team enjoyed a narrow 5-4 win over Cheltenham whilst our Second Team lost 2-7. Overall, it has been a great season for our boys’ tennis players.

• Congratulations to Izzy Lloyd who continues to excel at Golf. Over half-term, she won the Knowle Golf Club Girls’ Open with a score of 75, and the Droitwich Golf Club Girls’ Open with 78. Then, teaming up with Basil Strolz, she won her match against the Old Malvernian Golfing Society 5 and 4. Overall, Malvern drew with the Old Malvernian Golfing Society in a wonderful game at The Sunningdale Golf Club. The Golf awards for 2017-18 are as follows: OMGS Player of the Year: Izzy Lloyd; OMGS Most Improved Player: Basil Strolz; OMGS Captain’s Player of the Year: Allaster Renton who is also the Captain for the new year; The Hind Award for sustained contribution to golf: Charlie Hickman. Well done to all of the above.

• In Girls’ Tennis, there have been many good performances throughout this season and Sasha Wilson and Ria Shah, Imogen Cole and Gemma Luscombe, Lydia Newman and Lexie Clarke, Bonnie Green and Emily Atherton have all been mentioned in dispatches. Victories have been a little scarce, though for example, against Cheltenham College we performed well losing at First Team level 6-3, at Second Team level by the same margin and, in the Third Team, 8-1. The U14 A & B and U15 A & B teams have similarly struggled, but Emily Elgar and Louisa Marsden-Smedley have played particularly well.

• In Girls’ Cricket Georgina Macakiage and Heather Harris starred in a narrow loss by two wickets to Bromsgrove, whilst the latter teamed up with Sophie Roberts to do well in a victory against The Downs. Jemima Martyn-Smith and Megan Edwards each took two wickets in a match against Packwood Haugh. Our girls’ cricket has grown tremendously during the course of this season and we look forward to further matches for our three teams next year.

• In Boys’ Cricket our players have been very busy over the last fortnight: the U14C beat Shrewsbury by nine wickets with Sergey Artemov taking 5 for 8, whilst the U14B team beat Shrewsbury by 42 runs, Johnnie Stephenson taking 3/16 and Nuwa Rukendeema 3/11. The U14 A lost by five wickets with Oli Doherty making 64. However the U14A team then beat Millfield by five wickets, Olly Cox scoring 78 and taking three wickets, whilst the U14Bs beat Milfield by nine wickets, Harry Finch making 49 not out. The U15Bs also beat Millfield by nine wickets, Kit Staley and Minty Murray starring, and the U15As beat Millfield by 6 wickets with Jacob Perry and Harry Sillence impressing. The 1st XI progressed to the Regional finals of the National 20/20 and then beat Shrewsbury twice, once in a Saturday fixture and then in a 20/20. In the first of these fixtures we made only 168, but great fielding and three wickets from Jack Haynes brought us back into the picture and we bowled Shrewsbury out for 142. More recently, against Rondebosch, the touring side from South Africa, we made 258 and bowled them out for 172 with Will Sharp taking 5/23. Against Wellington, we chased 258/7 and won by 5 wickets, with Jack Haynes making 125*. Special congratulations go to Jack Haynes, our Captain, on his many successes over the course of the season; most recently he has been called up to play for England U19 in next month’s 2-Test series against South Africa. He has also made his first-class debut by playing for Worcestershire against West Indies A and has been offered a professional contract for the future.

Thomas. In the Autumn Term we will be launching the Mi-SoCS Co-curricular platform. We already use SoCs Sport and have done so for the past year with great success. This provides an effective source of information for staff, pupils and parents. Going one stage further, it will help us improve tracking and communication across all of our co-curricular activities including clubs and societies. The website and this functionality will ensure that parents can keep up to speed on all that is happening in this busy and thriving school. Further information can be obtained in September from our Deputy Head: Logistics, Mrs Roberta Keys on [email protected] I know that Mr Lewis Faulkner, Deputy Head: Pastoral, has written to you in connection with some reminders concerning uniform and norms that will be enforced from September and I would appreciate your support in this important matter.

I have already said farewell at Commemoration to those staff who are leaving us at the end of this term: Miss Laura Romijn, our German Assistant, who will be returning home; Mrs Natalie Heuter who will be moving to North Wales with her husband; Mr James Ricci, who will be working in Harrogate and Mr Richard Coughtrie who will be teaching at Dulwich. Ms Rachael Pike, who has been ill for most of the term, will also be leaving our staff. We wish them all a happy landing in their new situations. Mrs Vanessa Young will be stepping down as Housemistress of No. 6 after seven happy years there, and Mrs Rachel Graaff will be the new Housemistress in No. 6. Father Andrew Law will be stepping down as Chaplain, after 16 years of dedicated work, though remaining on our staff in a part-time capacity teaching RS and being at the helm of our UCAS applications. We thank him for his work as Chaplain over the past years providing pastoral support to our broader community. Very recently, we have appointed the Reverend David Ibbotson, currently Chaplain at Eastbourne College, who will be joining us in January 2019. In the interim, Adam Wharton, currently Housemaster in No. 1 will fulfil the Chaplain’s role and we are grateful to him for stepping up to this challenge. I would also like to wish Mark Moss, our Senior Hockey coach, every success as he captains the England over 35 Men’s Squad in the World Cup this summer. Lastly, may I wish you all a very happy and fun-filled summer. I do hope that there is plenty of time for relaxation and I hope that our young people will take up my suggestion of engaging with at least one new challenge over the next two months. With my best wishes

Antony Clark Headmaster
