Public Housing, Income and Education: Focus on City of Los Angeles

The city of Los Angeles built several large housing projects after WWII to

provide housing for low-income factory workers.

Through time these have become sites of increasing levels of poverty.

Education is the only way out of this cycle of poverty.

Housing Sites: Location

Skill set: *Inset Map of Los Angeles City within LA county and bordering counties. *Geocoding: Assigned geographic location to attribute data of HACLA public housing sites.

The majority of HACLA sites service the South Los Angeles and East Los Angeles areas.

With a few scattered sites in West LA and The SF Valley.

Nickerson Gardens - 1066 Units

Built in 1955, is the largest public housing project West of the Mississippi River.

Pueblo del Rio – 660 units

Jordan Downs – 677 units

Mar Vista Gardens – 601 units

Skill Set: *Boundary sub-sets selection- LA City Limits shapefile created by selecting LA_City from larger California cities file and converting to new shapefile.

Skill Set: *Create an index- calculated the % of individuals 25+ w/no HS Diploma using data acquired: total # of 25+ individuals and total # of individuals with no HS diplomas.

Correlation between Income and Education

Data Source: US Census 2010; ACS.

Lower Median Income correlates directly to areas with highest % of adults 25 and over with no High School degrees.

Low Median Income and high % of 25+ adults w/no High School degrees peak in areas approximate to HACLA sites.

Poverty and Education Near HACLA Sites : South LA

Skill Set: *Create an index- calculated the % of individuals 25+ w/no HS Diploma that are also living below poverty.

• Using our previous map that describes the % of adults 25+ with no High School education, we now see an overlay of the percentage of those individuals that are living below poverty.

Poverty and Education Near HACLA Sites : West LA

• Areas adjacent to HACLA sites show high rates of these individuals with low educational attainment also living below poverty

Skill set: *Attribute sub-sets selections- create major fwy file from major hwys derived by querying LA_streets for 405, 5 ,10, 105 and 405 fwys and creating new layer files
