From our Principal, John Maguire Tenā koutou katoa ngā whānau, tālofa lava, afio mai,

I can honestly breathe a sigh of relief as we close the door on Term 2 2020! What a long, challenging, exciting and eventful time this has been, in fact, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, change in term dates and the launch of online learning, term one and two have effectively blended into one! Hallelujah, the holiday’s have arrived, our “shelter from the storm”. In my school assembly this week I encouraged our students to head into the holidays with purpose and meaning. I encouraged them to actually take a break, rest and recharge. Whilst we might at times look at our teens and wish they would do more, give more, be more, the net effect of the global pandemic on their lives means that our students, like all of us, are navigating significant change and uncertainty in their lives. Of course, change and uncertainty can be uplifting, exciting and rewarding, it is also challenging and exhausting. I pray that our students, our teachers and staff experience peacefulness and downtime throughout the holidays to enable them to regain balance in their lives. For our students it will also be important to give a little time for independent learning, study or revision during the break to support them in their preparation and readiness for term 3 and the year ahead.

I have been pleased and inspired by the commitment and energy of our students this term. So much has been achieved. This week is no exception, our Christian Service leaders Josef and Sarah supported by the Justice and Ministry team launched the school wide Mufti Day to raise over $700 to donate to UNICEF who are helping to aid those suffering in Yemen. Students enjoyed gathering in the school library on Thursday for an evening of fun, games and film. Thank you to

year 12 student Jonty Perrett for his leadership in setting up lighting and sound to create a most welcoming and warm environment.

It was a privilege to travel to the Playhouse Theatre to experience talent and creativity of our year 11 students drama performances held over two evenings this week. Thank you to our wonderful Drama teacher Mrs Annie Millard and the Arts Faculty for the opportunity to share these performances with family and friends.

Enrolments for 2021 are steadily coming in from throughout the top of the South. We look forward to our Parent information evening on the 22 July and Open Day on the 30 July. I also welcome parents and whānau to arrange a time to meet with me to discuss their child’s learning and to view the College in action. Should you have friends or family considering Catholic secondary education for their children, please do encourage them to make contact with me. I wish to remind parents of the opportunity to apply for Twinkle scholarships in Catholic Character, Academic, Arts &Performing Arts, Sport and Finance. Visit Garin College Website for more information on Scholarships and enrolment packs.

Thank you again to you all for your wonderful support this term, I look forward to meeting you again in Term 3 and building on all that has been achieved by all to date this year. God Bless John Maguire Principal

Live Reports

Garin College in 2019 shifted to a Live Reporting system through the KAMAR Parent Portal. The purpose of this shift was to move away from a mid year/ end of year reporting system. We felt that whānau/caregivers should be made aware of their son/ daughters learning progress as it occurs, rather than waiting for a reporting time period in order to do this. Garin College Staff are reporting marks and comments to your son/ daughter’s KAMAR Portal as learning occurs. This enables you to start a learning conversation with your son/ daughter and we invite you to connect with the teacher who has posted their learning progressions. Please check this regularly as it is being updated every two - three weeks once learning has been completed in particular curriculum areas. For NCEA Level 1, 2 & 3 Learners you are able to view their NCEA Results as they come in for 2020. You can view the subject, grade and credit weighting they have received. These updates are automatic and occur in real time as soon as our staff have uploaded their results into KAMAR. To view how to look at Live Reports and their NCEA Results please follow the steps below:

1. Log into KAMAR Parent Portal

2. To view Live Reports for 2020

Te Aho Reports

Garin College staff are continuing to report on learning and personal excellence through Te Aho Reports every fortnight. Our KAMAR System which presents this data to you is experiencing challenges and not presenting this data. This means you will not be able to view Te Aho information on the Parent Portal at present. KAMAR have assured our College that they are working on this issue and we receive daily updates from them. Once this issue is resolved you will be notified and all data for the year will be available to view.

Thank you for your patience with this.

Teaching & Learning @ Garin College

Teaching & Learning @ Garin College Parent Teacher Interviews Garin College due to Covid - 19 has made the decision to postpone all Parent Teacher Interviews that were organised to be offered in Term Two. The reason for this is the Live Reporting system that is available to all whānau & caregivers. This is available on Parent Portal and is updated by teachers of your son/ daughter regularly throughout the Term. Please view these reports and if you have any questions please email your son/ daughters classroom teacher with their contact details on this link.

Survey - Your perspective on Online Learning At Garin College our motto is 'faith & wisdom”. The recent rāhui has led us to consider the learning opportunities and challenges our rangitahi faced during the lockdown, and to think about those changes we may wish to hold onto. As a College we are very interested in hearing views from our whānau and community on learning and your experiences during the Covid-19 rāhui. We know we saw some really interesting and valuable learning occurring, and we are keen to know what you thought, felt, saw and experienced as parents. We want to try and learn from those experiences, so your feedback is important. One great piece of learning was: "As we go back to 'normal', let's decide what parts of normal we want to go back to." Thinking about what learning in the future may look like at Garin College, we would like to ask for your help in deciding which parts of rāhui and our pre-Covid-19 style of learning we want to hold on to and which parts we need to move on from. Please follow this link and complete the short survey: https://forms.gle/Ln6v321NSzVjhKtA9 If you would like to forward any additional thoughts to Jeremy Cumming, please don't hesitate to be in contact (email address below).

End of Year Digital Exams The College is continuing to offer digital exams at the end of the year for NCEA. Teachers will be talking with students regarding which subjects will be available and how any online learning experience this year could help build their confidence in digital exams. Resources to help students get ready include practice activities, digitised versions of 2019 exams and video resources showing how to use features and functions of the exams. More information can be found on the Student Exam Hub - https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/ncea/

Later in the year, we will be canvassing students about their preferences for the end of year examinations. Where a digital exam is offered by NZQA, all students will have the option of completing the exam digitally. They will be able to choose to change this to paper at any point, up to and including during the exam. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact me. Jeremy Cumming [email protected]

“Faith Facts" week 12- Term 2

Give nothing to racism

Give no tolerance, give no laughs, give no likes

Give no attention, give no welcome, give no respect

Give no agreement, give no encouragement, give no support

Give no power, give no home

This Sunday is the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time: ‘I am gentle and humble of heart’: Zechariah 9:9-10, Psalm 145 Romans 8:9-11, Matthew 11:25-30 This week’s readings set the scene in the Gospel for a contradiction, where Jesus implies his message is not necessarily for the educated and clever. This is a slight to the Scribes and Pharisees, the ‘academics’ of the day. Jesus maintains that understanding is for the humble, those who have a sense of wonder and awe. Matthew is writing to Jewish converts caught up in the turbulence of the times, where the yoke of the Law was burdensome. Matthew’s contention is that Jesus’ yoke in contrast is easy and light. A yoke is a piece of agricultural tackle that went around the neck of an ox and was attached to a plough or cart that the ox could then drag along. Yokes are still in use in many parts of the world today. The Gospel passage begins with Jesus praying a blessing, called a berakah. It is the basis of Jewish prayers of praise and thanksgiving and still in evidence in the Eucharistic liturgy today.

WELLBEING

CORNER Kia ora Everyone Happy holidays! What a term it has been. We came into it two weeks early, and started the term by studying from home. We then came back to a very different school environment, where we couldn't even meet for assemblies! But we got there in the end. READING CHALLENGE 2020 - RESULTS Our annual Reading Challenge has just finished, and despite the crazy term with its unexpected rāhui, and the

overlap with Mahi Toi, it was great to see just as many students as usual record the pages they read over the 3

week period. Despite strong challenges from Mrs Rankin’s A5 whānau and Mrs Moorhead’s M4, Ms Walker’s B4

whānau again took the prize for 100% participation – the 7th year in a row! Congratulations go to our top readers

for each house: MacKillop - Mackenzie Brough; Barbier - Sarah Carter; McAuley - Simmone MacManus, and top

reader for Aubert & overall for 2020 - Ryan Chilton. Mention must also be made of Jake Beekmeyer, Grace

Robson, Theresa Hills, Lucy Forgan, Megan McCauley & Asha White who all read thousands of pages, but were

beaten to the top prize in their houses.

This year the House competition was extremely close, and Barbier was slightly in front at the end of the

Challenge, however MacKillop had put quite some effort into ‘flattering’ Mrs Ditzel, our librarian, into gifting her

pages to them, and her pages were enough to propel MacKillop to victory for the first time since 2015.

Congratulations to MacKillop, and especially their captains Sebastian & Taneeka who put in the effort to ensure

they were the winning House.

Reading Challenge is an opportunity for our students who are voracious readers to be recognised, and an

encouragement to all students to pick up a book for enjoyment. Reading for pleasure naturally drops off as

students hit their teens, with the greater demands that school, sports, work and their social life place on their

time, so Reading Challenge serves as a reminder of the pleasure that can be found in reading. Thanks to all those

who took part, those who encouraged them, and those who lost their children for 3 weeks into a book!

Careers Corner

Well here we are wrapping up another term - from someone new to working in this role, the school year sure goes by fast! This term I have been working closely with our Year 13’s to help them refine their plans for next year and beyond. The majority are choosing to go to university in 2021. See the graph below for more detail:

Year 11 Careers Education This term I spent time in all Year 11 Mathematics classes exploring career options using the Career Central programme. If you would like to see the job options that came up for your teen based on their interests, skills and values, please ask them to login in and show you. This can be a great way to start career and future pathway discussions at home. Have a wonderful school holiday break - take care and keep safe.

From the Performing Arts Garin Musicians have been busy this week. On Monday, three Rockquest hopefuls entered the solos and duos competition. Good luck to soloists Zac Griffiths, Elysia Bronte and duo of Ariana Copeland with Brooklyn Scott.

On Thursday afternoon Year 11 Music students enjoyed a short

piano recital by Gloria, before sharing their own performances for

Level 1 NCEA assessments. It was an enjoyable afternoon, showing

our range of musical talents from rock to folk, classical and jazz.

Well done everyone.
