Principal’s message What a busy time we’ve had in Term 2 at Boolaroo PS. Last Friday night the students had a fantastic
time at the “Rainbow Disco” a very big thankyou to the P&C for their organisation. This week K-4 had
an amazing day at the Australian Reptile Park, learning many new things about Australian animals,
and FINALLY the weather has been kind to us and we were able to hold our Small Schools Sports
Carnival. Well done those students who were able to participate and a big thankyou to Ms Webb ,
great job!
Next week, Semester 1 reports will go home with students and the staff are holding a thankyou
breakfast being held on Thursday 5th for all our wonderful and supportive parents / carers.
NAIDOC Week NAIDOC Week is 8th – 15th July and BPS will celebrate this in Term 3 Week 2, Thursday 2nd August. This year’s NAIDOC
theme, celebrates the essential role that Indigenous women have played - and continue to play - as active and significant role
models at the community, local, state and national levels.
Enrol for Kindergarten 2019 It is that time of year when we start processing enrolments for Kindergarten 2019. If you have a child or know someone with a
child who will start Kinder in 2019, it is time to collect an enrolment package from the school. Please let them know about our
Little Skippers program that runs every 2nd Wednesday from 2pm for all 4 year olds (dates are located at the back of the
newsletter).
Enrolments for other years are also available so if you know of anyone moving into the new estates in Boolaroo or thinking of
a change then please let them know to ring or call into the office to obtain information for their child.
Lost Property There is a large amount of lost property in the school corridor outside the main office. If your children are missing any items,
feel free to have a look. It is mainly clothing apparel. Please ensure that all school items are labelled and this will make it easier
for staff to return items back promptly.
So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu.
As Term 2 draws to a close, Mrs Mbonimpa and the LAST extension Year 3 and Year 5 students reflect on their learning. We
have enjoyed a rich and varied learning journey in what seems like such a short time.
Growth Mindset, NAPLAN preparation, Reading Comprehension, Writing skills, Grammar, Punctuation, Maths word problems,
problem solving strategies, operations and number facts were just some of the important learning areas we delved into.
The students in Mrs Mbonimpa’s LAST Learning Classroom are leaving with a greater sense of themselves and their ability to
achieve across the curriculum using positive mindset strategies, as well as, measured improved results in targeted areas.
Last week, Year 3 students were excited by the fact that they had improved in basic division facts from an average of 64% to
87% celebrating with loud cheers and Jasmine’s well-known “happy dance” that I’m sure could be felt in Mrs Wilkinson’s

classroom next door. The Year 5 students were also proud of their achievements, which showed an
improvement in reading comprehension, scoring 91% in comparison with their previous score of
79%. The senior class celebrated with cool hand slaps all round and rather large grins.
It has been a pleasure working with the Year 3 and Year 5 students during first and second term. I
am proud of the students who have attended my classes regularly and allowed themselves to grow as learners by applying the
knowledge and skills they have been taught.
After all… we are all learners on this journey of life. Mrs Mbonimpa : )
5/6 Shark News! The end of the term is drawing near. Well done to those students who participated in our athletics
carnival on Wednesday! We have had our soccer at LMHS postponed till next term because of the
weather. The students have been looking forward to Healthy Harold coming up. The Year 6 shirts are
in motion so if parents / carers of Year 6 students can get those notes in as soon as possible we will
be able to order them! The students have been finalising their information reports in class about
deserts and rainforests and they are looking great. It is coming to assessment time and the students will be getting assessed in
maths, reading and writing.
The Sharks are also working on presenting speeches on a historic event that involved Australia in the 20th Century. These will
be presented in week 10 and I look forward to hearing them! I hope everyone had fun at Friday’s disco, and we look forward to
celebrating our parent / carers with a breakfast on the 5th of July! Miss Webb
The Penguins have been fortunate to have Mrs Swain in their classroom teaching some fantastic
lessons. Mrs Swain is a Masters Prac student who will be working with Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Geres
over the next term to finish her teaching degree. Mrs Swain has planned and prepared some
fantastic activities for students. The Penguins have been learning about Mass and doing some fun hands on activities using
scales, play dough and wooden blocks to compare and contrast weight. Students have been engaged in these lessons and were
surprised at the outcomes. Students have been learning about fractions and have been enjoying their daily Maths rotations.

In P.E the penguins have been working with Mrs Mbonimpa participating in their active lifestyle unit called "Lets Move".
Students have been discussing important issues such as how many hours of sleep people need, nutrition and exercise. Mrs
Swain has also been taking part of the lesson and doing some fundamental movement skills with the class.
In Literacy the penguins have continued with persuasive writing and have been doing a unit of work on a fantastic book called
"I want an Iguana' by Karen Kaufman Orloff. Students are writing a letter to their parents to convince them to have a pet of
their choice. Next term the Penguins will be researching and writing information reports on selected topics. As we are coming
to the end of term two we would like to wish students and their families a well deserved break over the school holidays. Stay
safe and enjoy time with your families. See you next term. Love Mrs Geres and Mrs Wilkinson
The Turtles have worked super hard this term and I’m very proud of the effort they put into their
learning every day. They are continuing to work hard to reach their reading and writing goals! In
reading we have been focusing on sounding out words and re-reading to correct if it doesn’t make
sense. In writing we have been focusing on using capital letters, full stops, spaces and interesting words
to engage the audience. In Science we have learnt lots about worms, snails, slugs and ants. We have
spent time discussing and labelling their features and have produced some really AMAZING writing about them. Here is Oliver,
Maddi and Ada-Belle’s interesting writing about snails and Maci, Benji and Brax’s wonderful writing about snails!
All Turtles have been enthusiastically participating in music lessons and we have been
learning about beat, rhythm and pitch. We are really enjoying using percussion instruments
to play along to music and have been experimenting with our voices by singing a range of
songs (really loudly!!!)J We can’t wait to show you what we have been learning at the Week
10 assembly- Thursday 5th July 9am
K-4 Reptile Park Excursion! We had so much fun at the Reptile Park and were on our best behaviour, representing BPS
beautifully. We got to explore the park and we saw lots of different creatures like crocodiles,
lizards, koalas, snakes and spiders. We thought it was great that we had to hold Miss
McCaw’s hand through Spider World because she was SO SCARED! We also loved seeing Mrs
Wilkinson and Mr White hold a giant python called Fluffy! It was hilarious! The show was so
interesting and we got to pat a koala, blue tongue lizard and two types of snakes. We had a wonderful day out! Here is what a
few Turtles and Penguins liked best about the day:
Hunter- My favourite part of today was seeing the snakes and crocodiles.
Isaiah- I loved seeing the bats and birds.
Cailin- I like the big tortoise and the dingo pups. They were cute! Lilly- I liked watching the kangaroos wander around while we were eating.
Violet- I liked the dingo pups and the bats.
Sophie- I liked playing on the big lizard slide in the playground.
Taylor- I liked seeing the dingo pups playing together.
Payton- My favourite part of the day was when Mr White and Mrs Wilkinson had to hold the giant python.
Alexa- My favourite part of the day was spider world. We saw a funnel web!
Jaidan A- I liked seeing the dingos and shopping in the gift shop.
Zade- I liked seeing all of the snakes!
Zack- The best part was watching the show and seeing the snakes.
Infectious Diseases Impetigo (im-pet-eye-go) An infection of the skin caused by bacteria. It is often called school sores because it is common among school children. Children with impetigo are very infectious (contagious), but the spread of impetigo can be reduced by practising good hygiene, covering the sores with dressings and keeping your child away from other children until they are no longer infectious. Signs and symptoms of impetigo
The sores can be anywhere on the body, but are often on the face near the mouth and nose, or on the arms and legs.
Impetigo may start with a blister or a group of blisters.
The blister bursts leaving a patch of red, wet, weepy skin.
The sore usually becomes coated with a tan or yellowish crust, making it look like it has been covered with honey.
There can be small spots around the first sores, spreading outwards.
There is often superficial peeling on the edge of the sore.
Impetigo is usually itchy Treatment for impetigo
Take your child to your doctor who may prescribe antibiotic medicine in the form of a cream, ointment, tablets or syrup. Give these to your child as directed, and make sure you complete the course of antibiotics. If your child gets impetigo repeatedly your doctor may do a nose swab to test for bacteria in the nose. Your child may
need antibiotics, which are delivered into the nose, to prevent further instances of impetigo.
Your child can go back to child care, kindergarten or school after 24 hours of treatment and when the sores are completely
covered with dressings. go to—https://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/Impetigo_school_sores/
Whooping cough
Is a respiratory infection (infection of the lungs) that causes coughing. The coughing can occur in long spells, and often ends
with a high-pitched 'whoop' sound when the child breathes in. Whooping cough is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella
pertussis and. Whooping cough is extremely contagious and is particularly serious in babies under six months of age, who are
at risk of severe complications and will usually need to be admitted to hospital. Children and adults can also get whooping
cough, but are unlikely to need hospitalisation. Whooping cough is sometimes treated with antibiotics but there is an
immunisation for whooping cough.
Signs and symptoms of whooping cough
Whooping cough usually starts with cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose and dry cough, which last for about one week.

After that, a more definite cough develops, which may last for 10 weeks or more Some children cough
so much they vomit afterwards. Children are usually well between coughing spells. Babies under six
months of age may have pauses in breathing (called apnoeas) instead of a cough. In more severe
cases, babies and children may have problems catching their breath after a coughing spell. Other infections such as pneumonia
(chest infection) and middle ear infections are common while children have whooping cough.
When to see a doctor
Call an ambulance immediately if your child is struggling to breathe or if their lips start to turn blue.
If you think your child has whooping cough, take them to see your GP.. If your child is given antibiotics, they can still spread the
infection until they have had five days of antibiotics. Because whooping cough is easily spread, often other family members or
close contacts of the child with whooping cough will also have the infection. Antibiotics may need to be given to anyone who
has had very close contact with your child while your child was infectious, including women in the last month of pregnancy and
babies less than six months old. The antibiotics will help protect them from getting whooping cough. Children with whooping
cough should not attend child care, kindergarten or school for three weeks from the start of the cough, if no antibiotics are
given until they have had at least five days of their course of antibiotics.
If there is an outbreak of whooping cough and your child is not immunised, they will have to stay away from child care,
kindergarten or school for three weeks, or until the outbreak settles.

provided by Lake Macquarie Council.
Attendance As mentioned in our last newsletter
We understand that there have been many illness this term but the average attendance rate for the school is very low
and our text messages each day requesting a reason for your child's absence often goes unanswered. We use this
method of communication as it is easier and more convenient for you rather that having to fill out a form and remember
to send it back to the office within seven days. This leads to a flagging of the attendance of your child which then leads
to Teacher / Principal communication with you as a Parent / Carer. If satisfactory reasons are not obtained or the school
is unable to contact the Parent / Carer, the Home School Liaison Officer may become involved and this can lead to legal
prosecution. The HSLO visits the school every term to discuss high absences and views attendance rates weekly.
It is noted that absences are also placed on your child’s report cards.
Today we are sending out a letter that has all your child’s absences for this term and what the impact of this on your
child’s learning.
Only those within the last seven days may be altered. We are also sending the percentage of your child’s attendance.
If you are able to lodge a School Stream submission for any absences within the last seven days or call the school please
do so as this helps.
Exciting new Blu Bots!!
We have just purchased these fabulous little robots that
children code using maths skills to spell words.
The children love them!!
