Unique method to curb credit card frauds globallyIn a move to stem credit card frauds worldwide, a team of US

researchers has developed an inexpensive, secure method to pre-vent mass credit card fraud using existing magnetic card readers.Called SafePay, the novel technique works by transforming disposablecredit card information to electrical current and driving a magnetic cardchip to simulate the behaviour of a physical magnetic card. The keychallenge today is that existing magnetic card readers use plain text tostore confidential information which makes them vulnerable to anuntrusted card reader or skimming device. “Because SafePay is back-ward compatible with existing magnetic card readers, it will greatlyrelieve the burden of merchants in replacing card readers and, at thesame time, protect cardholders from mass data breaches,” explained

Yinzhi Cao, assistant professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Here is how it works.First, the user downloads and executes the mobile banking application which communicates with the bank

server. During transactions, the mobile application acquires disposable credit card numbers from the bank server, generates a wave file, plays the file to generate electrical current and then drives the magnetic card chip via anaudio jack or Bluetooth. “With SafePay, disposable credit card information expires after a limited time or number ofusages. So, even if the information is leaked, it cannot be used for future transactions,” the authors pointed out.

Its has a magnetic credit card chip that makes it completely compatible with existing readers. It also features a mobile banking application that automates the process making and makes it extremely user-

friendly. Cao and his colleagues conducted real-world experiments with the SafePay technology performing trans-actions with a vending machine, a gas station and a university coffee shop. In all three scenarios, the SafePaymethod worked and the transactions were successful. The research is set to be presented at the IEEE Conferenceon Communications and Network Security from September 28-30, in Florence, Italy. Picture for representationpurpose only.

Par panel asks FinMin to make 15% of PSBbranches all-women offices

A parliamentary panel has recommended making at least 15 per cent<http://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/banks/govt-to-invest-rs-70000-cr-over-four-years-in-public-sector-banks/story/222451.html>PSBsbranches all-women offices to provide safe and convenient work environ-ment to women in the banking sector.

It has also recommended flexible working hours for women employ-ees to help them balance their professional and family responsibilities. In areport on ‘Working Conditions of Women in Public Sector Banks’, the panelsaid that PSBs should be instructed by the Finance Ministry to open atleast 15 per cent of their branches as all-women units, especially in thoseparts of the country where discrimination against women has traditionally

been on the higher side than the rest of the country. It will make womenfolk feel comfortable to access a bankingsystem that is devoid of gender-biases as well as is non-discriminatory towards them, the Committee on Empow-erment of Women said in its report. The report said the government should also work out the modalities forintroducing flexible working hours for women employees in PSBs.

As flexi working hours will allow women employees to strike a balance between her professional and familyresponsibility, maintain healthy lifestyles and contribute to parenting well, it is recommended for the same and urgeupon the government to work out the modalities in this direction, it said.

The Committee asked the banks to take a lenient view regarding transfer of women employees. There arisesthe need for the banks to take the most lenient view while taking decisions regarding posting of women employees, keeping in view her spouse’s place of posting, her obligation towards off-springs and also the dwelling place ofparents in case she is as yet not married, it said.
