ST PAUL’S CHURCH MORTON WEST LINDSEY OPEN CHURCHES FESTIVAL

During the first two week-ends of May, churches throughout West Lindsey will be open to the public and St. Paul’s church will be open 14 and 15th May between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Festival generates a lot of interest from visitors from a large area of the country, and St Paul’s has many visitors to view the stained glass windows and other features of the church. This year we are trying something a little different to try to involve the Morton Community in the festival “A Celebration of Flowers.” We are inviting you to bring to church any possessions that you have with flowers included in the design of it that you may think visitors will be interested in looking at. Suggestions are:- Ceramics, cups, saucers, plates, jugs, ornaments etc “Flower Fairy” collectables, fabrics, dresses, skirts, scarves etc. Pictures, paintings, photography, books, poetry. We will also be having four displays over the week-end that you are invited to contribute to. An art exhibition of flower paintings by local artists that could be offered for sale. Photographs of children and flowers/gardens. A collage of flowers, using any media-maximum A3 A miniature garden in a foil container. Any item can be brought to church on Friday between 3-6 p.m. to be placed on the display tables, pin board on window bottoms. Further details available from the Churchwardens Alan Clapham- 612546 or Jim Muncaster 612329. THE LABYRINTH The labyrinth was created in the field adjoining St. Paul’s Church in 2015. This year the children of Morton Trentside School have been asked to design a series of 16 panels to be placed round the Labyrinth in words and pictures of the hymn “All th ings bright and beautiful.” The panels will be A3 size on a metal support. If you would like to sponsor a panel please ask for details from either of the above two contacts, your name will be included on the panel The panels will be on displayed over the Churches Festival Weekend. During the weekend Morton Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows. Brownies and Guides will be having demonstrations and exhibitions on the field that you are invited to join in with.

Headstone restoration - Morton St. Paul's churchyard

The Friends of Gainsborough Cemeteries and Chapel have raised funds to restore two headstones which have fallen into disrepair in Morton St. Paul's churchyard, they remember two soldiers who died in WW1, and the Friends are trying to find out if there are still any relatives in the area. Clarke and Lily Barlow lived in Stevenson's Building, Morton, with their two children William Clarke and Hilda. William enlisted in the Royal Engineers early in the war and died of wounds in 1916. After the war his parents had a headstone erected in the churchyard at Morton to remember him. The headstone in now flat on the ground. The inscription reads "IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR DEAR AND ONLY SON, L’CPL. WILLIAM C BARLOW R.E. WHO DIED OF WOUNDS ON OCTOBER 29TH 1916, IN HIS 22ND YEAR., INTERRED AT THE KARASOLI MILITARY CEMETERY GREECE . Before the war William was well-known in Morton, he had worked at Marshalls and had been a member of the St. John Ambulance Corps, Morton Choral Society, Morton Church Choir, was a teacher at the Gainsborough Poor Sunday School and had been a Boy Scout. He enlisted on 2nd September, 1914.

The Gainsborough News published a letter that was sent to his parents from one of his officers:-

Dear Mrs. Barlow, - It is with the very deepest regret that I write to tell you that your son who was serving with the Field Co., R.E., made the "great sacrifice" last night. He was in action with seven others of his section when he was hit with a bullet in the stomach. He was wonderfully brave and displayed the greatest fortitude and endurance of pain while we were carrying him out of action. ...He died at 11.15 a.m. this morning at the clearing station. I have only been the officer in charge of his section for a few weeks, but I wish to express on behalf of his section and myself our admiration for him, and at the same time tender our sympathy for you and the rest of his family."

The intention is to get the headstone restored before the 100th anniversary of his death later this year. The Friends know very little about the other soldier who is remembered on his nephew, Samuel Drinkall's, headstone in the churchyard. The inscription says:- "IN LOVING MEMORY OF CPL. ERNEST SPRAKES, UNCLE OF THE AFORESAID, KILLED IN ACTION IN FRANCE, OCT. 30TH 1917, AGED 20 YEARS.” He was awarded the Military Medal and was killed in action on 30th October, 1917. He does not have a known grave and is named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres . His mother, Mary Hannah Killelay, lived at 15 Marlborough Street he had a sister Olive and two brothers Alfred and Thomas. Before the war he had worked for the Post Office and enlisted in the London Regiment (Post Office Rifles). His name was on the War Memorial which once was in Gainsborough Post Office. The Friends are keen to find out if anyone may have any further information about these two soldiers. Please contact either Peter Bradshaw 610507 or Susan Edlington 612030 or email [email protected]

St Paul’s Church, Morton Revd Kevin writes…….

Dear Friends It seems hard to believe that it was nearly 3 years ago that Julie and I came to Morton to

live and for me to be the Curate in the Parish of Gainsborough and Morton. But it is true and as is the way with all curates they eventually have to leave and serve God and his people in a new place.

For us that new place will be the Team Ministry of Bottesford with Ashby back in Scunthorpe and we are both looking forward to the challenge and to getting to know new people and a new community.

Of course, going somewhere new means that we will be saying goodbye to you and for us both that will indeed be a sad day. You have made us so welcome and it has been very easy to feel part of the village community here in Morton.

I have had pastoral oversight of St Paul’s Church during my curacy and it has been a privilege to serve the faithful congregation of St Paul’s and to help them to grow in confidence and be the village church. As I have stressed in the past, St Paul’s is Morton’s church and over the last 3 years we have tried to build a sense of belonging within the village that it is a place where all are welcome and valued.

I believe that the relationship between the church and the village is as strong as it has been for a long time and I have particularly enjoyed my time serving the community through working with the school, care homes, village hall, shops and pubs as well as being involved in village activities such as Morton Feast.

On many occasions there have been a lot of people in church as we have celebrated together at Christmas, Easter, Harvest, and Mothering Sunday; when the school children, families and staff have been in and when, at ‘Feast’ time we have started to celebrate village life and community together.

These opportunities represent times when we can build relationships and our understanding of one another. This can only bode well for the future and for when you look to your church community to support you both in the happy and in the painful times which inevitably come to us all. To serve the community and its families at weddings, christenings and funerals has been a very special part of my ministry here.

Last year we created a labyrinth in the church field next to St Paul’s. Some of you will have seen it and perhaps even used it and in May 2016 the Morton School children are going to help you walk the labyrinth using the theme of the hymn ‘All things bright and beautiful’. In the future it is also intended to incorporate the labyrinth into a garden that will be open to the whole community as a place of peace and prayer. Please do come, over the weekend of Sunday 15th May, and see the children’s artwork and familiarise yourself with this new village space.

As we leave, I would like to say a big thank you to you all and to everyone who I have had the pleasure to share my ministry with over the last 3 years. The time has gone very quickly but I have learned so much in my time here and come to appreciate the wonderful village community life that is shared here in Morton.

All our love and blessings for the future.

Revd Kevin & Julie Dyke

Paul is hosting an evening of musical delight on Friday 22nd April at Hemswell Court near Gainsborough. Paul will regale the audience with humorous tales from his 20-year career and mesmerise with his exquisite piano playing. Paul is a renowned pianist and organist who has appeared on the BBC Proms and over sixty productions in the West End. His achievements are even more astonishing when you consider that Paul is profoundly deaf. After his performance at The Proms, Paul was described as having "twinkling charisma, and the effect is intoxicating." He will also be joined our local Lindum Ladies Choir where he will sign alongside their performance. Paul is a born performer who can captivate any audience with his sheer passion and boundless talent. Tickets are £22 and include canapes and a drink on arrival!
