FEMS Microbiology Letters Poster Prize Winners

We are proud to announce the winners of the FEMS Microbiology Letters  Poster Prize, awarded at the  Molecular Microbial Ecology Group Meeting (MMEG) 2018 in Swansea, UK.

The 4 judges felt that 2 posters and their presenters were outstanding and were keen to recognise both of them. Two prizes were presented to Chiara Borsetto and Luke Hillary by Dr Kevin Purdy, the FEMS editorial representative to the MMEG conference.

Chiara Borsetto‘s (Twitter: @chiara_borsetto) poster was titled: ‘Investigating environmental antibiotic resistance using flumes to mimic the river environment’

Luke Hilary‘s (Twitter: @lukehillary) poster was titled: ‘Phages under foot: viromics detects long-term persistence offaecally associated viruses in biosolid amended soils’

Call for papers: Halophilic Microorganisms

We invite manuscripts on all aspects of microbial life at high salt concentrations.

Topics may include ecology, taxonomy, physiology, genetics, -omics approaches, and applications of halophilic bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotic microorganisms.

All submitted papers should be complete and adequately supported by original experimental work leading to significant advances in line with the journal’s usual scope and policies – they should not be preliminary versions of studies to be published elsewhere in complete form at a later date.

This Thematic Issue of FEMS Microbiology Letters is connected to the: Halophiles 2019 Conference, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 24 – 28 June 2019

Submission Deadline: 1 September 2019

FEMS is seeking two new Directors

We are seeking two new members of our Board

FEMS is steered and overseen by a Board of Directors, each contributing their skills and experience to ensure the organization works efficiently and is ready to meet future challenges:

Secretary General:Responsible for overseeing FEMS governance including the running of general meetings and elections according to the Articles of Association and overseeing the application, reporting and termination of membership.

Director (Business & Policy):A new role to help connect microbiology research across academia and industry and to work to ensure scientific input into relevant policy making.

Application Deadline: 30 April 2019

Pathogens and DiseaseMiniReview

Estimating treatment prolongation for persistent infections

Treatment of infectious diseases is often requires patients to take drugs after they have seemingly recovered because of a phenomenon called persistence, which allows small fractions of the bacterial population to survive treatment. The authors develop a generalized mathematical framework that can accommodate various persistence mechanisms.

Strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance: anti-plasmid and plasmid curing

AMR genes (ARGs) are frequently located on plasmids. Novel strategies to combat AMR are needed, and plasmid curing and anti-plasmid approaches could reduce AGR prevalence, and sensitise bacteria to antibiotics. This review highlights a general lack of in vivo curing options, which, if filled, could provide a promising mechanism to reduce ARG prevalence in humans and animals.

Environmental dimensions of antibiotic resistance: assessment of basic science gaps

Historical approaches to managing antibiotic resistance have often focused on individual patients, specific pathogens and particular resistance phenotypes. However, it is increasingly recognized that antibiotic resistance is a complex ecological and evolutionary problem. This opinion paper identifies key knowledge gaps in our understanding of resistance phenomena, and outlines research needs that should help us manage resistance into the future.

Physiologic and metabolic characterization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae reveals limitations in the synthesis of the triterpene squalene

Here, the authors physiologically characterized a squalene overproducing S. cerevisiae CEN.PK strain to elucidate the effect of cultivation conditions on the production of this central triterpenoid precursor and for guiding further optimization efforts.

Lactic acid bacteria: from starter cultures to producers of chemicals

The aim of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the potential of lactic acid bacteria as biological catalysts for production of different organic compounds for food and non-food sectors based on their diversity, metabolic- and stress tolerance features, as well as the use of genetic/metabolic engineering tools for enhancing their capabilities.

GRANTS CORNER OPPORTUNITIESFEMS Meeting Attendance

Grants - Grantee StatementsDr. Paz Aranega Bou, Biosafety, Air and Water Microbiology

Group, National Infection Service, Porton Down, Public Health England

Member Society: Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM)

Meeting attended: 11th Healthcare Infection Society International

Conference, 26-28 November 2018, ACC, Liverpool, UK

“The Conference gathered national and international experts to discuss current research and clinical practice regarding the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of healthcare-associated infections. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to attend this event and present our work in this forum.

We presented our latest research looking at the effects of drainage and position of the drain in relation to the tap on dispersal of Gram negative pathogens from hospital sinks [in particular, carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)]. The session in particular and the whole conference was also an opportunity to strengthen links with our collaborating hospitals and build new ones, which enables us to ensure our research is relevant to the needs of hospitals.

I am truly grateful to FEMS for supporting our applied microbiology research with a meeting attendance travel grant.

Attending The 11th Healthcare Infection Society Annual Conference has been very rewarding both at a professional and personal level and has inspired me to continue working to generate evidence to improve infection control guidelines related to sinks, water and wastewater.”

EXTRAS

For a healthy planet, the health of all living creatures is equally important. One Health is a fairly new concept that prioritizes an interdisciplinary approach in science — to preserve the health of animals, humans and the environment. It is an approach that can be extended to any problem.
