Publicity!
Lions are the best kept secret in our communities.
We need to change this so that we can continue to be
viable through our second century of service. But
how??
Do all clubs have a Facebook page? Are they up to
date? Do you link events to your town or other
community Facebook pages? Have you thought
about doing radio or television Public Service
Announcements? Most stations have to give out so
much time to non-profit PSA’s to keep their licenses.
When was the last time you submitted an article to
a local or statewide newspaper? Do you wear Lions
gear occasionally when you are not at a Lions event?
There are nearly 1100 walking billboards in our
district that we are not utilizing!
Think about devoting a club meeting to new ways
to toot your horn with your community. By raising
awareness, you can reach new people who could be
potential new members. Which means your club can
help more people!
Speaking of publicity, we have Lion’s Pride Day
on January 13th (Melvin Jones’ birthday) where we all
get to “show our colors” and wear our Lions gear for
the day. If we all do this on the 13th just think about
the impact we could make! It can be a shirt, a hat, a
pin or any Lions stuff you have. Help us show the
communities in our district that Lions are here and
Lions are strong! And post the pictures to Facebook!
January 3-5 is the next New England Lions Council
meeting in Connecticut. Saturday there will be some
seminars including a Guiding Lion certification
course and an introduction to the North American
Membership Initiative (NAMI). All are welcome and
the registration for it is in this issue.
Next we have the Mid-Winter Convention. You
have the opportunity to hear our International
Director Allan Hunt speak. Come meet him and his
wife Sonja. It will be a great and “mesmerizing”
weekend. See the flyer in this issue of the Roar, fill it
out and register to attend. Remember, you can come
just for the meeting on Saturday morning if you
prefer.
Finally for this month, please make sure that if you
are interested you look at the Regional Lions
Leadership Institute application and flyer. This is a
tremendous opportunity for all of our New
Hampshire Lions. It is the first time that New
Hampshire has hosted an Institute and it will be held
right here in Nashua! So if you want to learn more
about Lions and topics you can even use outside of
Lions to possibly help build your resume, think about
applying to become a participant. There are only 25
openings available and it is being offered to all of
New England.
I hope everyone had a great holiday season and
let’s work together to make the second half of our
Lion’s year even better than the first.

Dear Lions:
It is with great sadness that I am writing you today. We have experienced an incredible
loss to our Lion family.
On December 17, International First Vice President Judge Haynes H. Townsend passed
away. We are heartbroken by this tragic loss to our Lion family, to the Townsend family
and his loving wife, Donna.
Judge Townsend was a capable man, a humble man, a man who believed in the power
of kindness to help and to heal. He was a judge who presided over his courtroom with
integrity and heart, knowing that lives and destinies hung in the balance. He was a leader
who believed that big ideas should drive us but that compassion should guide us. And
above all, he was a Lion.
For 40 years, Judge Townsend served. He was an active member of the Dalton Noon
Lions Club in his home of Dalton, Georgia, USA. He believed that acts of kindness, both
big and small, could change lives. And that’s just what he did as a Lion
It is difficult to lose an international leader of such importance. But it is even harder to
lose a man of such character. We will always cherish the time we had with Judge
Townsend, and we will continue to move forward, working to bring his vision for Lions,
and a world of kindness, to life.
Regards,
Dr. Jung-Yul Choi

A member of the Chilliwack Mount Cheam Lions Club since 1988, he first became a
Lion in 1979 as part of the Sandspit Lions Club. He has held a number of offices within

International Director

Dear Lions of MD44:
At the International Board of Directors
meeting in October, the Board voted to
approve an international dues adjustment
resolution that will be voted on at the
International Convention in Singapore in
2020. Lions Clubs International supports clubs
and members around the world so we can
advance our global mission of service
together. Our international support and the
work of Lions Clubs International is fueled by
the international dues of our incredible
members.
In recent years, it has become increasingly
clear that the services Lions Clubs
International has been able to provide to
members with the available budget is no
longer in line with what Lions need and
expect. The Board of Directors undertook an
extensive review of Lions Clubs
International’s financials, including the
implementation of substantial budget
reductions. After much consideration, the
board proposed to adjust dues by US$3
effective July 2021, raising dues to US$46,
then adjusted annually for U.S. inflation
thereafter. We will use a three-year inflation
average not to exceed 3.0% or be lower than
1.5%.
Why an international dues
adjustment is needed
We realize the association has been
reluctant to adjust dues over the years, and
we have not adjusted international dues since
2011. The proposed adjustment will help
cover our costs and allow us to suitably serve
our members’ needs. With that said, the
Board of Directors did not take this issue
lightly, nor are we minimizing the value of
each dollar that our members contribute. As
we consider this dues adjustment, it is
essential that we keep in mind that our global
efforts and initiatives support more than 1.4
million members in 48,000 clubs around the
world. Through the support of staff, we are
able to serve globally on the level that we do,
keeping members and clubs fully supported
with service resources, training events and
software, club operational support,
international meetings, language services,
technology, Foundation support,
leadership support, and everything else we
have come to expect as Lions. A dues
adjustment will allow Lions Clubs
International to provide improved support to
Lions and continue to invest in improving
programs and digital products like our
website and MyLion. It will also allow us to
invest in new programs such as the Learning
Management System (LMS), development of
new curriculum such as digital literacy,
training videos, global advertising, marketing
automation, digital and video storytelling and
others tools and initiatives that will enhance
our impact, our brand and our membership.
Why your help is needed
Essentially, we have to decide whether or
not we want Lions Clubs International to
continue to grow and thrive. Lions is more
than a way of life. It’s also an investment of
money, time, energy and passion. As with any
good investment, the more we put in, the
more returns we see.
Regards,
Dr. Jung-Yul Choi,
International President

Multiple Council Chair Fred Plett Notes
I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas, or a
Hanukkah Sameach (Happy Hanukkah). As we go
into the new year of 2020, let us start the year with
enthusiasm and new efforts to grow our service and
our clubs. We are at the beginning of a calendar year,
but we are in the middle of a Lions year. It is a good
time to pause and review the goals we started with
back in July, to see how we are performing against
those goals.
I don’t want the Roar and Pride to become
recruiting tools for businesses in this time of tight
labor, except recruiting tools for new Lions. I am
going to make an exception to that rule in the case of
the US Census which must be done in 2020, because
it is a civic necessity and people who are hired to
carry it out can feel good about performing a civic
duty, while making a little money to do it. I got a call
from a Darlene Gibbs, Recruiting Manager for the US
Government, who can be reached at 603-369-5607,
[email protected]. Darlene needs to
recruit 14,000 people to cover ME, NH and MA.
The job lasts 6-10- weeks, plus future possible
operations. It pays $17.50 an hour, $19.50 an hour
after 6 PM. As a Sunday per diem, add 25% to that
pay, and after 6 PM, 35%. It also pays 58¢ per mile for
use of personal vehicles in carrying out the
assignment. If you need a little extra cash and want
to feel good about doing a civic duty, please contact
Darlene. I did, and she in turn directed me to
2020census.gov/jobs to complete the profile, the
application, and the 3 assessments that follow.
Lastly, I look forward to seeing you all at the end
of this month, January 24-26, at Midwinter
convention at the Doubletree in Nashua, NH to
welcome our Lions International Director Allan
Hunt from Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.
Let’s have a great time!
LIONS SIGHT & HEARING
FOUNDATION OF NH, INC.
Annual Meeting - Reports and Elections
Where: MD44 Mid -Winter Convention,
Doubletree, Nashua, NH
Date: January 25, 2020
Each year per Article 2E of the Articles of Agreement,
the Foundation seeks dedicated Lions to run for four (4)
Director positions. The S&H Board is looking for Lions of
Excellence, willing to take an active role in the affairs of
Lionism at the Multiple district level. This year we have (4)
positions to fill, thus, to keep a balance, we need one (1)
elected from District 44N and three (3) from District 44H.
We encourage members of every Lions club in the state
to consider this request carefully, and to nominate
and support a member willing to serve for a three-year
term as Director of the Foundation. We urge your club to
nominate a Lion to be placed on the ballot. Please have
your club secretary send notification of your club support
of their nominee to Sight & Hearing Foundation c/o
Lion Langdon Plumer, 81 High Street, Apt 3, Exeter, NH
03833, or send E-Mail to [email protected] before
January 13, 2020. Please consider a position on the BOD.
WE NEED YOUR PARTICIPATION and HELP!!
Things you should know!
The Sight & Hearing BOD will propose adding a
Conflict of Interest Article to the Lions Sight & Hearing
Constitution. (This is the same as 44H, 44N and Multiple
District have adopted) All Lions in good standing may
vote on this proposal at the Mid- Winter Convention.
We will be accepting donations from individual Lions
and clubs at the Mid-Winter Convention.
How about awarding a Granite State Fellow? The
proceeds will go to the S&H Endowment Fund. Lion Alan
Hoye is the current Project Chair. Please have your club
health committee chair carefully review applications to
assure them being complete to help a prompt response
from LSHF. The minimum contribution from a club to
process a Hearing or Cataract application is $150.00.
Exceeding that amount is much appreciated by the BOD.

Each month I will be focusing on one of the five
LCI initiatives. This month’s focus is hunger.
Hunger Facts
• 815 million people were affected by hunger in
2016: 11% of the global population.
• 155 million children under the age of five are
stunted due to chronic malnutrition.
• 1/3 of annual food production is lost or wasted
throughout the supply chain.
• 33% of women of reproductive age suffer from
anemia.
We Have a Plan
Lions, Lioness, and Leos serve to improve
human flourishing, and we see how the global
hunger and nutrition crisis bears upon our local
communities. We believe community
improvement depends on the thriving of its
members.
Our Strategic Objective
To ensure all community members have access
to nutritious foods.

Hello to OUR New Year,
Did everyone have a joyous & wonderful Christmas and
bring in the New Year with many anticipations of changes
to our lives, our clubs, and our fellow mankind? The new
year seems to be a more popular time for resolutions,
perhaps to be a better person, helping more at a food
pantry, donating to reputable charities; for me, most of all,
listening to people’s thought and views for a better world
to live in. Good solutions to problems many of us deal with
in our everyday lives. January is the door to the New Year,
open that door and be prosperous.
Much sympathy to the family of LCI VP Judge Haynes
Townsend in the loss of their husband, father, son, and
friend. A loss to the Lions Club International team, and the
chain of command. May he rest in peace.
I am looking forward to the New England Lions Council
meeting January 3, 2020 in Norwich, Connecticut, maybe
even a stop over at the casino. There will be a Guiding
Lions class offered, Introduction to North American
Membership Initiative session, and a Go To Meeting/Go to
Webinar & Training seminar by Past District Governor
Harry Schuh.
Mid-Winter will be upon us before we know it.,
preparations are underway for a memorable weekend.
Since there is not a candidate for Second Vice District
Governor, there is an organizational team of Zone Mentors
in conjunction with all the Zone Chairs for a wonderful
social gathering over the weekend. Please no crockpots in
the Hospitality Room for lack of outlets, However, you can
prepare a crockpot in your room and bring it to the
Hospitality Room. I will be forwarding a list of the items I
have to donate to the Zone Mentors so they know what else
we need.
“In the New Year may your hand always be stretched
out in friendship, never in want”.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year full of Peace & Joy!

Happy New Year to the Lions of District 44N!
The Holidays and the year 2019 might be behind us
but our Lionistic year is still going strong with six
months left and I think we can all agree we still have a
lot to accomplish.
At this point in our Lionistic year, it is time to
really start thinking about leadership going forward
and to make sure we have the right people in the club
positions to maximize success.
There are many positions a successful club needs to
have in place come July 1st such as President, 1st, 2nd
and 3rd VP’s, Secretary, Treasure, Membership Chair,
OKS Coordinator, service, Club administer and LCIF
Coordinators to name a few.
While reaching out to your members to fill these
positions for next year, look to the members who have
a PASSION for the position.
For those Lions looking to hone their leadership
skills, now is a good time to apply for the Regional
Lions Leadership Institute being held here in NH in
March, get your application to DG Sue soon.
If your club is fortunate enough to be able to fill all
the leadership positions with those that are passionate
about that roll, there is no stopping that club to being
successful with added membership, leadership and
SERVICE!
So, let’s start planning now for a great year ahead!
The LCIF Coordinator position by default goes to
the immediate past president if not filled but can you
imagine how successful our Campaign 100 would be
if we all found that one member in the club who has a
passion to support and grow OUR Foundation!
I look forward to every club in our district having a
great rest of the year serving our communities and
being prepared to moving forward into the next
decade of Lionism with success!
Passionate leadership + good planning = Success!
If I can be of any assistance to your club reaching
your leadership goals, I will be happy to help

I’d like to share with you a story I read in the Concord
Monitor several months ago. It’s about a young man of 29
who became addicted to opioids at an early age, took to
selling fentanyl to fund his addiction, was arrested in the
summer of 2018, and is now recovering at the Homestead
Inn in Boscawen. Fentanyl is the most deadly of the opioid
drugs, being associated with 385 of the 470 overdose deaths
in New Hampshire in 2018.
His story begins when he was 17 years old and in high
school. He tried Oxycontin for the first time at a friend’s
house. “I didn’t think it was bad because it comes from a
pharmacy” Morris said. “I thought: a doctor prescribes
them; it’s not that big a deal. Then the day you don’t have
them you’re like ‘Oh my God, this is terrible’. You’re so sick,
it’s the worst feeling you’ve ever felt. The world is caving in
on you”.
He later turned to heroin when in his 20’s, lost jobs,
strained relationships with his family and led to dropping
out of college where he’d been pursuing an Electrical
Engineering degree. He did have the support of his family,
who tried to help him and forgave him is bad behavior but
could not help him end his drug habit.
It took his arrest in April 2018 as part of a large drug
operation in Lawrence, MA where 45 people were arrested,
to allow him to turn his life around. He was sent to Stafford
County Correctional Facility for 11 months before being
released to Homestead Inn. This was his first time he had
been in jail and having to explain to his two nieces, who are
under 10 years old, shamed him into getting sober.
As he related about his experience in jail, a lot of people
arrested for drug use just continue using while in prison and
begin the cycle again when released back into the
community, and eventually are arrested again. He wanted
to avoid that so he petitioned to be released and was granted
a stay at Homestead Inn while awaiting trial.
Homestead Inn is owned and operated by Kristine
Paquette. She started the recovery home six years ago after a
long career as a nursing supervisor at Hampstead Hospital.
She began the program for men who wanted to get sober
but had nowhere to go after being discharged from the
hospital for overdosing. So she bought an old motel on King
Street in Boscawen, NH, turned it into a home, renovated an
old barn on the property for a community space with long
wooden tables, games and a dart board. The residents all
have jobs in the area, working about 60 hours per week, are
subject to regular drug testing and pay $900.00 a month to
stay there. Most men stay for about one year, about the time
required to get themselves physically and emotionally back
on track.
Paquette tries to help them appreciate life sober with lots
of outdoor activities (e.g., kayaking trips) and community
service (e.g., volunteering for Old Home Day in Boscawen).
The residents have programming they are required to
attend almost every night. For example, on Tuesday night a
group of men who have completed recovery at Homestead
return to lead a discussion. These men are able to share their
recent successes in life with the current residents providing
encouragement and hope.
Sam Morris has learned how to deal with his
vulnerability in a positive way. “A lot of times before, I
would never go talk about things that were bothering me. I
would go get high”, he said. “Usually when addicts or
alcoholics are faced with difficult situations, their go-to
solution is to get messed up so you can escape reality. It’s
different now. It’s like, ‘Well, the only way this feeling is
going to go away is if I process it and figure out how I’m
going to deal with it’. Having those relationships with other
men that are here is vital”.
Morris said that previous attempt at treatment didn’t
work out because he wasn’t doing it for himself. It was
always to appease his parents or to gain a job. Now every
day is a conscious choice to get his life back on track.
Morris organized a community service project to clear
brush along the Northern Rail Trail. He wanted to do this to
make his mother proud and to give back to the Boscawen
community on behalf of Homestead Inn.
He’s looking forward to completing his stay at
Homestead and getting on with his life. Taking it one day at
a time and making sure the he is making the right choice
every day.
“You just have to hope for the best. You can’t control
anything but yourself” he said. “I don’t know what the
prosecutor is going to do or the judge is going to do. I can
only do what I think is right and what I know is right”.

HEY BUDDY can YOU SPARE A DIME? Contest
This contest will be on the Honor Basis. Mason Jars have been distributed to some Zone Chairs/Clubs. Any Club that does not have a mason jar please see me at the Mid-Winter convention to obtain a mason jar. My suggestion to the clubs: Have members collect their spare change in their pockets on a daily basis and put it in a jar. It is each club member’s responsibility to keep track of his donation amount. At the next club meeting bring your jar and empty it into the Mason jar. Give the person collecting these monies a note with your name and amount donated. Person who collects these monies send an e-mail to John Wynne [email protected] Subject Line “HEY BUDDY” Body of E-mail: Club Name then list donors name and amount donated. I will keep track of the total amount each club and individual donates. The Person responsible for the jar totals the amount collected and gives change to the Club Treasurer. Club Treasurer will decide when a check is to be sent to the District Treasurer. All amounts need to be paid to the district after 4/30/20 but before the Spring Convention. Each month I will ask the Roar Editor to list all donations received by the club and individual. If you do not see your name listed, contact me not the Roar Editor. ( [email protected]) Prizes: (only one prize per entry) 1. The individual who is the highest donor in the
district will receive a $100.00 Restaurant Gift Card. 2. The individual who donates the highest amount in their club, will be entered into a pool to be drawn to win the following: a) First (1st) Prize $50.00 restaurant gift card b) Second (2nd) Prize $25.00 restaurant gift card c) Third (3rd) Prize $25.00 restaurant gift card. 3. Everybody who donates no matter the amount will be entered into a pool to be eligible for the following: a) Drawing for five $20.00 gift cards B) Drawing for three $10.00 gift card On December 30, 2019, I counted up my spare change that I have been saving since July 1, 2019, and I have managed to save $90.00 over the course of 182 days which
comes out to an average of .4945 cents per day. $90.00 does not seem like it would have much of an impact on a fundraising goal of $300 Million over 3 years but if other Lions in the district join me in donating their spare change we would make an impact on the fundraising for Campaign Sight 100 especially if we decide to continue this contest through June 30, 2021. If 500 Lions joined me in saving .49 cents a day ($208.25), we would raise $104,125 from 5/1/20 through 6/30/21. If 1,000 Lions joined me saving .49 cents a day ($208.25), we would raise $208,250. I have calculated two scenarios below which I think are doable. See scenarios below: Assumption # 1 - January 01, 2020 to April 30, 2020 (Equals 120 Days) Approximately 1,000 Lions in District 44N If only 1/3 of the District’s Lions participate = 330 Lions Calculations: $6 Individual equals 5 cents a day 330 lions would contribute $16.50 per day @120 days = $ 1,980.00 $12 Individual equals 10 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $33.00 per day @120 days = $ 3,960.00 $36 Individual equals 30 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $99.00 per day @ 120 days = $11,860.0 $42 Individual equals 35 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $115.00 per day @ 120days = $13,860.00 $60 Individual equals 50 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $165.00 per day @ 120 days = $19,800.00
Assumption# 2 - May 01, 2020 to June 30, 2021 (Equals 425 Days) Approximately 1,000 Lions in District 44N If only 1/3 of the District’s Lions participate = 330 Lions Calculations: $21.25 Individual equals 5 cents a day 330 lions would contribute $16.50 per day @425 days = $ 7,012.50 $42.5 Individual equals 10 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $33.00 per day @425 days = $ 14,025.00 $127.50 individual equals 30 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $99.00 per day @425 days = $42,075.0 $148.25 Individual equals 35 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $115.00 per day @425days = $49,087.50 $212.50 Individual equals 50 cents a day 330 Lions would contribute $165.00 per day @425 days = $70,125.00

CHESTERFIELD
Chesterfield has been having a busy month! We served
over 100 children and parents at our Breakfast with Santa.
All had a marvelous time. We have started our pre-sales
of our Super Bowl Sunday Pancake Breakfast each week at
the Transfer Station. We have had one business meeting
and a board meeting. Unfortunately our guest speaker for
our second business meeting had to be rescheduled due to
the meeting being cancelled due to the snow storm. We
look forward to having her speak on January 7th now. We
had to reschedule our Christmas Party also due to the ice
but fortunately, many of our members and their spouses
were able to make the next date and a good time was had
by all!! Coming up this weekend we will be helping the
Legion with their Happiness Baskets a tradition they do
every year and we are so happy to be a part of it!
We wish everyone a wonderful and safe holiday season!
PETERBOROUGH
Our annual Christmas tree sale sold out of trees in
record time. Thanks to Valley Automotive for providing
us space to sell. Once again, the Shattuck in Jaffrey did an
outstanding job for us at our Christmas party, at which we
were joined by Souhegan Lions. We are looking forward
in 2020 to SPOT screenings, our annual Lucky Duck Race,
and exploring more ways to interact with our community.

MILFORD
Once again the Milford Lions
with the help of the local Fire
Department, decorated the “Oval”
and Gazebo in preparation for
Santa’s visit. This year Mrs. Claus
was available to join Santa to greet
all the children.
The month of

cheer will soon be
over as we begin a

refreshed and
optimistic. Hoping
to be part of that
optimism, we look
forward to serving
our community.
To begin the new
year, the Lions
with the help of
the fire
department will be tearing down all the lights and
decorations from the Oval on Sunday, January 5. This
photo depicts just how lovely the Oval appears during the
holiday season. The Milford club provided Christmas
presents for a family with 5 young children.
Unfortunately, the annual club Christmas party was
snowed out, better luck next year! The club is getting
ready for the annual Senior Holiday dinner to be held on
January 11, 2020.

On Saturday, December 7th we helped at the Historical Society Open House by providing refreshments, old
fashioned games and cookie decorating to about 30 children. Most had not decorated cookies before. We were able to
convince some parents to decorate cookies as well. Everyone had a good time. Nine members of our club were in
attendance.
On Saturday, December 14th we held our 11th Annual Holiday Senior Luncheon at the Brookline Fire Station. We
had 38 attendees. Somewhat fewer than past years, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Nine club members
worked at the luncheon.
