Discover Life in
BurlingtonThanksgivingand a Grateful Heart …By Jan Ludtke, Executive Director, Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce
None of us should need an official season or time of year to feel or extend gratitude. Just look around for a moment. Our families, friends, community – we’ve much to be grateful for. A simple acknowledgment of the many blessings we receive, everyday, is important. Sometimes in our busy lives, the habit of expressing our thanks can slip a little in priority – it doesn’t always come naturally.
At the Chamber of Commerce, we are grateful for our members, our board and their support and the generosity of our businesses and corporate sponsors. We are truly thankful for the wonderful people who live and work in our community – many of them of dedicated volunteers.
We invite you to enjoy our community and its hospitality at Light Up the Night on Friday, November 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. Bring along a donation for Operation Burlington Cares as we help kick off the Food Drive benefiting our local food pantry. It’s such an easy thing to do.
Find us on Facebook and www.burlingtonchamber.org.

before. Let’s get started with yours.

A Pause to Give Thanks November holds a special place in the hearts of many, including myself, because
it seems to be a natural time to pause and reflect on the things that we cherish and for which we are grateful. The obvious focal point is the Thanksgiving holiday at the end of the month but this time of year in general affords us a chance for quiet introspection and contemplation about what we have especially before the hectic Christmas season begins.
Traditionally, agrarian societies paused to give thanks for the bounty of the harvest and while most of us are not farmers, we certainly can look at our lives during the past year and find something for which we can give thanks. Weddings, graduations, births, the safe return of military personnel, a new job or promotion; these are just a few of those things. But readers of this column know that I usually have tried to take a broader, community-based perspective in my articles and I think that we can find reasons to be grateful from that point of view as well.
We live in a wonderful community. I am thankful for the natural beauty of Burlington. I am thankful for the resources available from banks to grocery stores to restaurants and a myriad of shops that not only add convenience to our lives but also put the city on firm financial ground. In addition, we have a strong and diverse industrial and commercial base that more times than not has been able to withstand the vagaries of the broader economy. I am also grateful for a responsive and proactive local government and school district. And, invariably, when one finds a quality community it usually is one grounded in a strong faith environment.
More than anything else, though, I am thankful for you, the people of Burlington. In many ways this is a progressive community yet people here are still small town friendly. People know you by your name and genuinely care about your well-being. Perhaps the best and most recent example of that is the way people came together to help after this summer’s flood. It is in a crisis that a community shows its true colors and we can be proud and thankful that we once again showed ours. —Tom Lebak

“The Old Stone Pile” Once a Fixture on Site of New Martin Park
The removal of the abandoned gas station-convenience store building from the corner of State and McHenry streets and the conversion of the property into Martin Park marks the latest chapter in that Hillside parcel's long history. Prior to the gas station's being built there in 1959, the parcel was home to a multi-room hotel building, which is shown in the 1959 photo taken by the late Emmett Raettig.
The following is adapted from an article that former Standard Press reporter Gloria McIntyre Landschoot wrote in March 1959 as the hotel building was about to be razed.
Another of Burlington's landmarks is being razed this week to be replaced by a modern building. The Hillside Hotel, often referred to as "the old stone pile," is being torn down to be replaced by a Texaco service center.
The triangle block at McHenry and Liberty (now W. State) streets was first purchased by Moses Smith in the 1839 government land sale and later sold to Pliny M. Perkins and then to Bernard Bushmann. In its early days, the parcel contained hitching posts to which the members of nearby St. Sebastian's Catholic Church tied their teams, cutters, and surreys during services.
Later a house, livery stable, and saloon were built on the parcel. In 1862 Adolph Rossmiller bought the land and in 1867 sold it to Peter Smith. Around 1870, after a fire destroyed his residence and other buildings on the property, Smith built the hotel but finished only the first two floors and a total of 14 rooms.
The hotel was sold to B. J. "Barney" Wentker in 1897, and Wentker's heirs owned the property until it was sold to the Cer-Tex Co. for the building of the service center. Wentker, who had a saloon next to the hotel, sometimes operated the hotel, which he called the Wentker House, and other times leased it out. Few of those who leased it, however, held it for more than a few years at a time.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lohaus, who operated the hotel for the longest period ‒ 1923 to 1933 ‒ gave it the name "the old stone pile" because of its stone construc-tion. Mrs. Lohaus (nee Rose Kortendick) and her two oldest daughters, Henrietta and Bernice, primarily operated the business. At first they had 14 rooms which later increased to 20 rooms with 25 beds. The building had running water but no bathrooms as we know them today. Each room had a wash bowl and pitcher but none of the rooms were heated as the boiler was inadequate to heat the whole hotel.
The hotel was a second home for men from the telephone crews, railroad crews, and other transient workers in the area. During the summer months, Mrs. Lohaus

Remember When
always had a full house and due to the homey atmosphere everyone called her "Ma." She cooked for her guests on a gas stove and an old type coal and wood cook stove. All meals were served family style and she catered to the likes of each of her guests. There were times when she and her daughters peeled as many as five bushels of potatoes for one day's meals.
All the wash was done by a hand-cranked washing machine and wrung out by hand. She mangled with a set of wooden rollers. This task in itself took from very early in the morning to late afternoon. Mrs. Lohaus said that, without the cooperation of her family and other girls who helped, the task of running the hotel would have been impossible as there were no conveniences in those days.
Mrs. Lohaus, who had been working in hotels since she was 16 years old, was an old hand at the task of setting up schedules and meals for such large groups. Her schedule for the week was as follows: Monday she washed the linens from all the rooms along with her family wash. Tuesday was ironing day and Wednesday and Thursday were spent cleaning the many rooms which, in addition to the 20 sleeping rooms, included a kitchen, pantry, living room, lobby, and two bedrooms for the family downstairs. Each room was thoroughly scrubbed once a week. The rough wood floors were scrubbed with soapy water and then rinsed with scalding water which made them snow white in appearance.
In 1933 the Lohaus's decided not to rent the hotel anymore due to the lack of conveniences in the building. From that time on, "the old stone pile" remained empty for long stretches and oftentimes only a few rooms at a time were used as living quarters for families and some space was rented out for a lunch room and a variety store.
After purchasing the property, the Cer-Tex Co. commissioned Edward Rueter to raze the hotel building and a Texaco service station was built in its place. The new building was of porcelain enamel and had two service stalls. In memory of the Wentker House / Hillside Hotel, a brass key from room 10 was inserted into the walls of the station's sales room as a reminder of the days gone by.
