We sadly see about 2-4 cases of

confirmed poisoning every month

in pets, and lots more cases of non-

specific gastroenteritis which could

be caused by mild poisoning. It is mainly dogs that are

affected as they are less fussy in what they scavenge and

eat but we do see cases of cats that are poisoned too.

The most common poisons that affect pets are:

Rodent Poisons (‘Rodenticides’), these contain

anticoagulants, such as warfarin, which prevent blood

clotting. Not all rodenticides are anticoagulants so it is

really important to try and find out which one has been

ingested. Ingesting these poisons can cause life-threatening

bleeding. This bleeding may not appear for several days

and may be internal and not visible so it is vital that you

seek veterinary attention as soon as possible if you think

that your pet may have eaten rat poison.

Chocolate, contains the stimulant theobromine which is

toxic to dogs. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting,

dehydration, hyperactivity, high temperature and blood

pressure, abnormal heart rhythm and tremors.

Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants, are very toxic

for our pets and cooking or baking doesn’t reduce the

risks. Poisoning causes vomiting and diarrhoea but can

lead to kidney failure a few days after the initial effects.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

(NSAID’s), eg. Ibuprofen. It is not uncommon for us to

see dogs that have eaten their owners medication.

Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding internally,

stomach ulceration and kidney failure.

Slug Pellets, these contain metaldehyde which is

extremely poisonous and is usually fatal without urgent

treatment. Dogs that have eaten slug pellets may initially

appear unsteady on their feet and twitchy but may rapidly

deteriorate and suffer convulsions and possibly

respiratory failure.

Antifreeze, this contains ethylene glycol which has a

sweet taste that is particularly appealing to cats. Ingesting

even the smallest amount can cause kidney failure and

death.

If you suspect that your pet may have been poisoned it is

essential to seek urgent veterinary advice as the sooner

these cases are treated the better chances they have of

making a full recovery. If you are at all concerned please

call Bourne Veterinary Practice on 01227 832322

for further information.

If you take part, you will be asked to share your

experience in facing flooding. You would be involved in

one session located centrally in the community, lasting

approximately 90 minutes.

We will give you £30 to cover your time and any

RHODES MINNIS EVENING CIRCLE

On the 18th February Rosemary

Piddock told us about "Soldiers of the

1st World War". Rosemary and her husband had

done a lot of research into the subject, and she gave

us an account of the terrible conditions endured in

the trenches, illustrated by images, photographs and

mementoes. The competition was won by Diana, with

Pat Kent 2nd, Margaret and Pearl 3rd, and Vera

4th. On the 15th April we are having a demonstration

of "Hotter" shoes by Colin Garner, so trot along and

have a look - you will be made very welcome! We

meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 7.30pm, and for

further details please contact Jacqui (862044) or

Marion (862913).

March meeting and we welcomed Sarah

Grazebrook who told us about her life as

a struggling actress who then changed tack

to become a novelist.

Stuck for a good subject, she realised that

real working class women didn’t often get

a mention. After much in depth research, Sarah created a

young girl who became involved with the Pankhursts and

the burgeoning Suffragette movement.

Sarah was able to speak to us in this young protagonist’s

voice, bringing the plot to life.

A few copies of the novel were sold at the meeting and

we thanked Sarah Grazebrook for kindly donating some

of her sales money to our charity.

Next meeting 9 April is the AGM. Don’t be alarmed by

that, there will be a tiny amount of business and then

Gary Harrison and his colleague PJ are coming to tell us

about their work as community wardens in the Elham

Valley.

After some background info, he has suggested a Q and A

session.

Thank you to all who supported the coffee morning in aid

of our charity – it was a great success.

Could you be that Samaritan?

Most people face difficult times in

their lives. Times when they feel very

low or when their troubles seem

overwhelming, times of complete despair. Times when

the future looks hopeless and there seems to be no

one to turn to.

But they can turn to Samaritans, open 24 hours a day,

every single day of the year. If you ring them you will

not be judged, Samaritans is not an advice line. It is

there to help you by being a confidential, listening

voice.

Samaritans is open to all. Anyone can call Samaritans.

Your age, sex, nationality, race, colour, religion, sexual

orientation, political beliefs or anything else do not

concern us. All you need to do is call and a Samaritan

will listen.

Could you be that Samaritan? If you feel you

could, please contact Canterbury & District Samaritans

details. Join us in what might possibly be the most

THANK YOU

Graham and I would very much like to thank Bob Knight for continuing to allow us to exercise Tod on the field that he has recently bought at the back of The Row and Cullen’s Hill.

As many of you will know Bob is working very hard to maintain and conserve the land. We feel that he has been extremely generous in allowing all dog walkers such as ourselves to have the freedom of the entire field (rather than restricting access to the footpath only). We would like to remind fellow pet owners to pick up their dog mess and not to leave sticks in the field as we've heard that these break his expensive mowing machinery and this does seem very unfair.

A very special announcement regarding 13th March 2015 – 45 years ago on that day Elham Primary School pupils and

staff moved into the new school buildings, the same buildings that we are using today. Watch this space for 5 years’

time when we celebrate 50 years!

Wi-Fi and new computers

Over the school break we had a wireless network installed in the school and we have 20 brand new laptops. This

means that we can develop the computing curriculum and also develop cross-curriculum learning in this area.

Parent and Carers Questionnaire

As you are aware we are over half way through the academic year. The staff and governors are working to improve

the school and make the education we provide for your child the best it can possibly be. We work in partnership

with you to achieve this and your opinion matters.

Please take time to complete the online parent questionnaire and give us your opinion about the service we provide

to you and your children. Please follow this link to gain access- https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JR5ZHYZ

(Paper copies are also available on request)

Red Nose Day – Friday 13th March

Thank you to everyone for supporting our fund raising day for RED NOSE 2015. The children had an amazing day and

looked wonderful in their different outfits. We as a school raised a fabulous £104.73 which was banked at the

weekend. Thank you to everyone for supporting this amazing charity.

Holly Club

Parents are no longer able to book places through the school office; they will have to book by using these methods

Holly Club Mobile: 07947 173370 or Kent Play Clubs: 01233 713 813 (office manned between 9-2pm Mon-Fri term

time) or Kent Play Clubs email: [email protected] thank you.

Breakfast Club Manager & Cleaner

We are looking for one or two active people to take on the roles of our Breakfast Club Manager 6.5

hours and a cleaner 7.5 hours per week, term time only. The posts will require the applicant to

undertake an enhanced DBS (CRB) check through the school. If you are interested in applying for

these posts, please contact Mrs A Risby in the School Office either by email

[email protected] or by telephone 01303-840325.

Thank you for your involvement in Operation Christmas Child last year.

Globally Samaritan’s Purse sent out 10,440,333 shoebox gifts to underprivileged children in over 100 countries, many

of whom had never received a gift in their lives before – showing them that God loves them and they have not been

forgotten. 850,638 of these were sent from the UK.

Recycling at Elham School

Sadly we can no longer recycle newspapers here at Elham School. The Company who operated out two newspaper

bins withdrew their services last term and there is no other Company prepared to run the service.

We continue to collect aluminium cans and foil in the two separate wheelie bins. These are sited just in front of our

staff car park gates. You may also recycle your old unwanted mobile phones/stamps/computer ink cartridges, batteries

and low-energy light bulbs via the school office.

*Report of Meeting of Elham Parish Council held at Elham Village Hall on 2nd March 2015

John Buss was warmly thanked for his hard work on behalf of the community, having stepped down after his move from Elham.

Members of the public raised the following issues: Faster Broadband - Mr. Peter Corkhill attended a meeting of nine residents on 24 February, chaired by Canon Ratcliff, when Mr. Sean Doherty of VFast explained how a faster broadband service could be delivered and promised to investigate possible sites for repeaters.

Once further information is available, findings will be presented to the Parish Council Kent CC Community Warden’s Report – the suspected abandoned vehicle had gone. Security cameras recorded an intruder at the Village Hall, entering through a fire exit door. Some rubbish was left, but no damage done.

2 Old Water Farmhouse, Duck Street, Elham – Water Farm residents complained about the state of the garden, which had been untended for some time, with waist-high vegetation. Mr. Harrison promised to investigate. Highways, Footpaths and Flooding

The following would be raised at a site meeting next month with Kent County Council: a request for a footpath opposite Brown's, overnight lorry parking, parking in the Square, 30mph speed limit, damage to the bank outside Caisters, and a general request for more consultation and forewarning from Kent CC on highway issues, including tree-works. Other items can be added by contacting Jenny Martin on 840838.

Jon Worrall and David Whitethread have agreed to become Flood Wardens. A security box and keys for the gate to the water grille at The Orchards are being obtained from the Environment Agency. New Wardens are needed to keep an eye on public footpaths and bridleways in the Parish, including stiles and fingerposts. Kent Wildlife

Trust are also looking for volunteers to keep an eye on the Roadside Nature Reserve on the way to Standardhill Farm. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in wild flora and fauna. For further information about both, please contact Jenny. A grant has been secured from County Cllr. Susan Carey’s Members’ Fund towards the new AONB signs at either end of the village.

We expect these to be installed shortly. Planning Applications received since the last meeting: Y15/0096/SH – Arqiva Services Ltd., Thomas Acre Farm, White Horse Lane, Wingmore, Elham. The development of a shared

electronic communications base station comprising a 30m high lattice mast, six antennas, two 0.6m diameter dishes and six ground based radio equipment cabinets installed within a fenced compound. Y15/0155/SH – Mrs. V. Searle, Mill House, The Row, Elham. Listed Building Consent for installation of 1 no. window to ground floor

on front (south east) elevation. Y15/0154/SH – Mrs. V. Searle, Mill House, The Row, Elham. Listed Building Consent for the erection of a single storey rear extension. Y15/0160/SH – Mrs. V. Searle, Mill House, The Row, Elham. Erection of a single storey rear extension.

Y15/0189/SH – Mr. P. Young, Grimsacre Cottage, Grimsacre Farm, Canterbury Road, North Elham. Erection of a detached three-bay garage with home office. The Parish Council recommended no objection to the first four applications. Whilst it had no objection to a garage at Grimsacre

Cottage, it felt that the proposal presented was inappropriate for the rural AONB setting and out of proportion to the site. Planning Decisions notified since the last meeting: Y14/1331/SH – Mr. and Mrs. S. Dougal, Bereforstal Farm, Canterbury Road. Elham. Erection of a single storey side extension, with a

balcony formed on the roof, together with an extension to the main dwelling roof and increase of habitable space at first floor level. Y14/1303/SH – Mr. H. Francis, Yew Tree House, Beech Villa Lane, Bladbean, Elham. Erection of extensions to existing garage/studio apartment. Y14/1310/SH – Mr. S. Skinner, 1 The Square, Elham. Listed Building Consent for the demolition and rebuilding of chimney to gable end

wall (west elevation). Y14/1311/SH – Mr. S. Skinner, 1 The Square, Elham. Listed Building Consent for the demolition and rebuild of chimney to the rear (east elevation).

Shepway DC approved all the above with conditions. Y15/0004/SH – Mr. T. Millett, Land rear of Droveway Bungalow, Droveway, Elham: Erection of a barn (28 day notification). Application withdrawn.

Burial Ground and Closed Churchyard Cllrs. Johnson and Palmer received log books for the closed Churchyard and open Burial Ground to record regular headstone “touch tests” and potential Health and Safety hazards.

Defibrillator for Elham Further information is being gathered with a view to fund-raising to bring a defibrillator and cabinet to Elham as soon as possible. We would be delighted to hear from local clubs, societies and organisations willing to help us – please contact Jenny for further information.

Parish Council Elections – Jenny now has nominations packs awaiting collection by anyone interested in standing for election on 7 May. For further information contact her on 840838. Nominations begin on 30 March and end at 4pm on 9 April. Most of the Parish Council is standing down this time, so those of you who are interested in local affairs and want to make a difference, please come

forward! Jenny also has a supply of nomination packs for Shepway District Council. Please watch our website http://www.elhampc.kentparishes.gov.uk/ and noticeboard for Election Notices. Our Annual Parish Meeting will be held in the Peggy Pike Room at Elham Village Hall at 7.30pm on Monday 30 March

2015. This is a special annual meeting for local residents, when the Parish Council and any local club, society, organisation, school or Church, showcase their activities and maybe attract new members by presenting a short report, either in person, or by sending it to Jenny. We very much look forward to seeing you there and hearing from local people what the new Parish Council can do for the community.

The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on: Monday 13 April 2015 at 7.30pm in The Peggy Pike Room at Elham Village Hall. All are very welcome to come along for all or part of the meeting and speak during the public session. All agendas and minutes in full can be viewed on our website http://www.elhampc.kentparishes.gov.uk/ and on the noticeboard in the village centre.

A bit out of kilter date-wise again this month, but I can

report on a very successful meeting on 19th February

when Gerry Newman gave us an excellent talk on

Fertilisers. He discussed the whole range of products on

the market - which chemicals they contained, what they

should be used for and where and when they should be

applied. Lots of questions followed which were dealt

with efficiently - altogether an entertaining and very

informative evening.

On Saturday 11th April we have the Spring Show and

Coffee Morning in the Village Hall. Do come along and

enter as many classes as you can and, of course, enjoy a

cup of coffee and a chat with friends. There will be a

Raffle, a Cake Stall and a Plant Stall.

Our speaker on 16th April will be Russell Bowes whose

talk is entitled “Dig for Victory” - don’t miss it.

There are still a very few places left for the trip to

Yorkshire in June. Anyone who wishes to go should

contact Hugh Buckhurst on 840347.

Meetings are held at 7.30pm in the Peggy Pike Room of

the Village Hall - friends and new members are always

welcome.

From your County

Councillor I’ve had requests to write more

about broadband, traffic through the village and the

proposal for a trust to run Kent’s libraries and I will do

so but this month I want to devote my entry to the

Care Act as there are important changes that start from

this April which affect anyone presently in care or who

may need care in future.

It’s often an unpleasant surprise for people to discover

that whilst health care is ‘free’ you are expected to meet

the costs of care you may need in your home or in a

residential or nursing home unless you have very little by

way of assets (less than £23,250 and this includes the

value of your home). Some people need support for

years and care costs can mount rapidly. The Care Act

introduces an upper limit of £72,000 to the amount any

individual has to pay for the care element of their

assessed needs. This change (and most of the other

major changes) starts in April 2016 but if you are already

receiving care or about to do so you can have an

assessment from April 2015 i.e. now. Such an

assessment ensures that from April next year that

person’s care costs will be eligible for the lifetime cap on

care costs. You can find out more on www.kent.gov.uk

(search for ‘Care Act’) or ring 03000 41 61 61.

Before the Care Act local councils set their own

eligibility criteria for when people received help. Kent

County Council is one of the minority of councils which

offer help when needs were assessed as ‘moderate’ but

most councils only do so for ‘critical’ or ‘substantial’.

The Care Act sets one standard for the whole of

England which is broadly in line with the present KCC

standard. Another part of the Care Act allows people

to have their care costs deferred until after death; this

has long been an option in Kent but again the Care Act

makes this a right rather than at the discretion of your

council.

As well as setting national standards, the Care Act

introduces more support for carers and independent

advocacy for the most vulnerable. KCC expects many

more people will be eligible for help with care costs

once the Care Act comes fully into effect. The details of

the changes are still being worked out as it is a very

major change intended to benefit many people. I’ll be

reporting on the changes as they are finalised but the

first change starts now with the right to an assessment.

Mum’s Night Out

The next informal gathering

will be on Wednesday 22nd

April at the Rose & Crown.

Meet at 7.30pm. This is a

relaxed catch up and chance to

meet other like-minded mums who would like to be a

bit more social but don’t often get the chance! Have a

glass of something refreshing and see what’s going on in

the area.

Spring Cleaning for King George V Playing Field

Please join us down at the play area on Sunday May 10th

for a Spring Clean, between 10am and 2pm. Please note

that due to previous lack of support we are anticipating

low numbers of adults, therefore due to the number of

tools and potentially dangerous equipment required, the

PLAY AREA WILL BE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC

DURING THIS TIME. Volunteers can bring their

children along but must be responsible for them at all

times. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring

gloves and any gardening equipment that you can.

Refreshments will be provided.

Fundraising

We hope to run a number of fundraising events this

year and will be looking to the community for support,

so please help us where you can. We need funds to buy

additional litter bins for the play area and whilst we have

paid this year’s insurance costs of over £2,000, we need

to start raising funds for next year. This is a huge

amount of money to raise so please let us know if you

have any ideas that you think could work! We are

planning another Clothes Collection this year so please

hang on to your old togs as we can make money from

them. We also hope to run a couple of Coffee Mornings

and Cake Sales and some activities at the King George V

Playing Field so watch out for announcements and

please support us if you can.

To get involved or offer ideas/help/money (!) please

email [email protected] or call Briony 840083

or Emma 840447.

With summer rapidly approaching (!) thoughts are now

turning to the new season, groundwork has just started

and the ground is looking good. The next few weekends

should see plenty of activity down at Holloway field on

Saturday mornings, with ground preparation.

Grounds assistant

With an expanding playing schedule (in particular junior

cricket), the club is looking for help with the increased

groundkeeping that is required. All at Elham are

volunteers and any extra help would be much

appreciated. This role would perhaps suit a retired

person in the Elham area or someone keen to learn

groundsmanship. If interested please contact Frank as

listed below.

Senior teams

This year the club will again run 2 Saturday sides and

one Sunday side. One Saturday team will play all friendly

games (catering for perhaps the older veterans!) and the

other is in the Kent Regional feeder league – with the

aim to give younger players the experience of league

cricket and a team to graduate to after playing U15

junior cricket. Sunday is a mixture of league (Kent

village league Div 2) and friendly games.

We are always keen to attract local players from Elham

and the surrounds, and can offer a truly beautiful

ground, good cricket (hopefully) and of course good

teas!

Junior coaching and colts teams

This season the club will again be running junior

coaching sessions at the club ground on Saturday

mornings 10-12, throughout the summer,

starting at the end of April and continuing until

the end of August.

We are also hoping to run a full junior team

section, with U11, U13 and U15 colt’s teams who

will play friendly & league matches.

Nets

Nets are currently taking place at the Canterbury

Cricket Ground indoor facility and hopefully continuing

into early April – information is available on the club

website (elhamvalley.play-cricket.com).

Quiz

The next in our regular series of Quiz nights will be held

on Friday 17th April starting at 7.30pm at Elham Village

Hall. Teams to consist of 6 to 8 people and an entrance

fee of £5 per person.

For more information please contact quiz master (well

he does have all the answers!) Frank Hobbs on 01303

862188.
