  • Slovenska Narodna Citalnica, Inc. 6417 St. Clair Ave. est. 1906 Cleveland, Ohio 44103 February 4, 2009 Dear Fellow Slovenians, They say, “Everything old is new again” or “Look through the eyes of a child”. The committee of the Slovenska Narodna Čitalnica of Cleveland Ohio has been doing exactly that, as we dust off the covers of our books, and page through our history. We are now beginning a new chapter of our legacy as we plan the new “edition”, the children's library. Won't you join us? Come to our Annual Meeting. At the Citalnica founding in 1906 the “Nova domovina” publisher, Rajko Fajgelj, invited the leadership of Slovenian clubs and organizations to combine forces and start a Slovenian library for their community. It may surprise some that, yes, we have been in continuous operation since 1906. There have been those, who through good times and bad, staunchly persevered in keeping the Slovenska Narodna Citalnica, Inc. available to the Slovenian community of Cleveland. We are the oldest cultural organization in continuous operation outside Slovenia, and the oldest private specialized library in Cleveland. If you are not yet a member, please join us. If you are an organization, please remember to appoint your organization's representative to our Advisory Board. Your continued financial support is greatly appreciated. All Slovenians and Slovenian organizations and their members are invited to attend this special meeting designed to answer questions regarding the future of the Slovenska Narodna Citalnica and the children's library. We invite you to be a part of it. It does not matter how much or how little you think you know about Slovenian history, nor how well you speak or understand the language. We are all committed to sharing and preserving our Slovenian American culture and heritage for ourselves and our children. The informative Annual Meeting of the Slovenska Narodna Čitalnica, Inc. is Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 2:00pm on the second floor of the Slovenian National Home, 6417 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland 44103. All Slovenians are welcome. THE SLOVENSKA NARODNA ČITALNICA Nenca Cerer, President Larry Hocevar, Secretary-Treasurer Joe Valencic, Vice-President Marie (Marinka Hočevar) Engstrom, Librarian

On Saturday at Noon, most of the skiers meet at the top lodge for a group picture. The flag doesn't need to be brought up, as it is there permanently. • The Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Cleveland hosted its fourth annual Kulturni Večer/Cultural Evening event last Sunday, February 8, at the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Ave. The event was well attended and featured students from St. Mary's Slovenian School, St. Vitus Slovenian School, St. Vitus Adult Slovenian School and Lakeland Community College. Dr. Zvone Žigon was the evening's master of ceremonies and started the program with a brief description of 'France Prešeren Day' and how it is celebrated in Slovenia. Each student group recited poetry and entertained with instrumentals on piano and trumpet. Also presented by an adult student was a brief history of beekeeping in Slovenia. The evening began and ended with a choral ensemble of teachers from the local Slovenian schools. Both children and adults were engaging in their delivery and the evening was a delight. The cultural evening included a photography exhibit presented by the Slovenian Museum and Archives (SMA). The exhibit titled, “Ljubljana – Washington, DC ... and Cleveland” featured native Slovenian photographers displaying parallel similarities between geographical points of interest in Ljubljana and Washington D.C. Local Slovenian photographers displayed their views of nature, city architecture, and landscapes. Following the event, performers and audience members enjoyed klobase and strudel in the Kenik Room while being entertained by local musicians on accordion.

  • A note from Frank Bucar in Duluth Minnesota I received this inquiry regarding Slovenian linguists and although I did several assignments interpreting for the Slovenian military when I was with the Air National Guard, I would find it difficult to devote the necessary time for such an assignment at this time. You may have gotten this message yourself and, if not, you may have the means to pass this on to someone who may be interested. • History of "The Nash" The corner stone was placed on October 19, 1919 and sponsors at the christening of the building were Jacob Janchar and Mary Kuznik. The big day came on June 13, 1920. A grand opening complete with parade, speakers and festivities kicked off the hall in high style. At the opening, President, John Lekan stepped on the stage and among his first words were "This is our Slovenski Narodni Dom No.2 which we can all be proud." He was followed by other guest speakers and singing groups as Dr. Zvon, Slovenija and others. That night a dance was scheduled and an auction for the first dance was held. The auctioneer was Anton Globokar who opened the bidding at $5.00. Anton Grdini turned out to be the highest bidder at $65.00. His partner for the first dance was Agnes Bobna (Zagar). The festivities ran through the wee hours of the morning and all had a good time. It was truley a big day for the Slovenes in the Newburgh. Lean-years prompted by the depression in 1920 and 1921 - plagued the home as it tried to get up on it's feet. The leaders of the home and many of the shareholders can be credited with making a go of it. Several took liens on their homes just so the financial integrity of The Slovenian Home could be maintained. It was very tough making ends meet. Among the unsung hero's of that era were the custodians. They had the big task of tending bar, managing, maintaining and cleaning the home, plus taking care of any incedentals that came up. The first custodian was Frank Kokotek. The second was Ignac Jeric, who along with some of the directors, donated wine to the home to help meet expenses. Matt Zupancic, another custodian did the same. Among the people who deserve much credit for the success of the home during these trying years were Florian Cesar and Andrew Zagar. Mr Cesar had the thankless job of being financial secretary during the depression suffering

  • much mental anguish not knowing from day to day how the money would come in to meet expenses. He was honored as The Slovenian Man Of The Year through the Newburgh home through the Slovenian Federation of homes in 1964. Mr Zagar was loved by young and old alike, and devoted his life to the welfare of the home until his unexpected death on July 30, 1939. Sad news hit the home in 1924 with the death of it's president, John Lekan. Joseph Lekan was elected to succeed him and he held the post for the next 25 years. Under his leadership, the home grew and flourished. It was under his tenure of office that the mortgage was burned in 1929, a plaque honoring John Lekan was dedicated, the two lower leval rooms were remodeled and a great expansion program was launched in 1949. This expansion added a 12 lane bowling center, a banquet hall was built above the bowling center, which expanded the upper hall to a point where it could seat 700. The bar room facilities were expanded in the lower leval and a meeting room was added. On May 22, 1949, In conjunction with the homes 30th anniversary, the addition was dedicated and officially opened. On January 15th of that year, the bowling alley went into operation. The first alley manager was Joseph Kovach. In 1951, a new constitution and bi-laws were approved. The meticulous job of translating from Slovenian to English was done by Victoria Hocevar. • U.S., Slovene Armies Conduct Largest Joint Training Exercise Embassy Events http://slovenia.usembassy.gov February 6, 2009 U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Bradley Freden and Defense Attache LTC Jeff Vestal joined Minister Jelušič on February 6 in Hohenfels, Germany to observe the training. Upon completion of the training, the Slovene Light Battalion Battle Group (LBBG) will be ready to take part in the KFOR mission in Kosovo as part of a multinational force helping to bring peace, stability and democracy to the Balkans. Demonstrating Slovenia’s dedication and commitment to supporting peacekeeping efforts throughout the world, the Slovene Light Battalion Battle Group (LBBG) is nearing completion of a rigorous course of training and readiness in cooperation with the U.S. Army in Hohenfels at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center. The LBBG, consisting of 1,100 soldiers, represents one-eighth of Slovenia’s standing army and is the largest deployment the Slovenian Armed Forces have conducted outside of their borders. Chargé d’Affaires Bradley Freden commented upon how deeply impressed the Americans were by Slovenian troops. “The Slovenian troops have shown exceptional professionalism and dedication to their craft. This joint exercise illustrates our two countries’ commitment to the common security and shared democratic values of the transatlantic Alliance,” Freden stated. Training together with the U.S. Army, the battle group is undergoing rigorous and realistic training at a state of the art facility, equipped with extensive monitoring and instrumentation that provide valuable

information and feedback to improve and enhance the units’ effectiveness. Since 2007, Slovenian troops have trained with U.S. and multinational troops in Germany to prepare for a variety of missions. Prešeren Award Prizes Recipients in Washington

Ljubljana, February 7 – As a part of the celebration of Slovenian Cultural Day, Prešeren’ Day, the Prešeren Prizes and Prešeren Fund Prizes were given to individuals, who were recognized for their exceptional artistic and cultural contribution for Slovenia.

Prešeren Prizes, granted for life time achievements, were this year given to Actress Stefka Drolc and painter Zmago Jeraj.

The 85-year-old actress was rewarded for her countless roles in the theatre, film, radio and television, as well as for her work with students at the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television.

Her fellow laureate, Jeraj, 71, has established himself in nearly all fields of visual arts: painting, drawing, caricature, graphic arts, photography, theatre set design and film. His creativity has always been open to new ideas and global trends, which he has also helped create.

Prešeren Fund Prizes are distributed for specific accomplishments in the field of artistic endeavors.

This year the prizes went out to screen writer and director Miran Zupanič, novelist Goran Vojnović, actor Marko Mandič, composer Nenad Firšt, and to soprano Sabina Cvilak and sculptor Tobias Putrih.

Sabina Cvilak and Tobias Putrih are Slovenian artist, who have been gaining reputation also in Washington. Cvilak performed for a Washington National Opera twice in last two years, as Mimi in La Bohème (season 2007/2008) and as Michaela in Carmen (the season 2008/2009). Cvilak both times received numerous praises from the public and critics.

    Sabina Cvilak

Tobias Putrih’s work appeared as part of the MoveMoment exhibition in 2007 at the Embassy of Slovenia. Putrih is known as sculptor, but his drawings are not to be overlooked. His free hand drawings are tracing singularly rational and at the same time playful abstract constructions.

Putrih also collaborated with Emil Memon on commissioned work for the Embassy, which will open at an exhibition later this year.

    Interview Series:Mrs. Barbara K. Nelson

    Honorary Consul

Mrs. Barbara Koval Nelson is Slovenian Honorary Consul for the Midwest, living in Kansas City. She grew up in Pennsylvania in a family, where

Slovenian heritage was cherished and Slovenian tradition past onto younger generations. She has been always enthusiastic

about Slovenia and has showed her enthusiasm in recent years through a very successful promotion of Slovenian culture within the US.

    1. How would you describe your connection to Slovenia?

Growing up in Pittsburgh meant that being Slovenian was not that unusual. My mother's parents came from Slovenia in 1912 and all of her five children knew how proud and sentimental she was about her heritage. Eating her delicious walnut laden nut roll and listening to polka

music was just natural to all of us. It wasn't until I went to college at the Pennsylvania State University that I realized that not everyone had a Slavic background. As a journalist for McGraw-Hill's Magazines, including Business Week, I was sent to London and wrote stories from many cities in Europe and even had a by-lined column from the London Metals Exchange. During the summers in collage I was a stewardess on Capital, a non scheduled airline that took me mainly to Europe and Africa. Traveling is in my genes and my first trip to Slovenia left a lasting impression on me. I've never stopped wanting to help publicize the country. As a banker's wife, I have met many leaders of business and government and because we travel widely and have a lifetime of volunteering for causes we admire, I was delighted to become an Honorary Consul.

    2. As a Slovenian Honorary Consul in Kansas, what part of this position do you experience as the most rewarding and challenging?

I especially enjoy introducing Slovenia to those who aren't certain just where it is on the map. When then Ambassador Žbogar came to Kansas City we visited with the Kansas City Star Editorial Board who wrote an article titled "Little Country with a Big Voice". During a visit with Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius, we discussed the possibilities for increased trade and travel. She was interested in the thriving Slovenian community in Kansas who came to work in the slaughterhouses and meat packing plants in the early 1900's.

    3. What are some of your latest engagements to promote Slovenia in Kansas and nationwide?

Many of that loyal group has been supportive of the events such as last summer's showing of the film “Slovenian Women in America” which I have sponsored. We reached many more on an hour long public radio show about Slovenia and the European Union. It's been a pleasure working with the Embassy staff, Slovenians from around the country (such as historian Joe Valencic of Cleveland) and serving with the 28 other Honorary Consuls in our Kansas City Consular Corps. I am currently preparing for this year's participation of Slovenia at the Kansas City Film Jubilee.

    4. Do you travel to Slovenia often and do you plan on going soon?

In 2003, my brother and sisters and I traveled to Slovenia and found our Bitenc cousins in Rafolce and the Cevecs in Laseno. How surprised we were when they produced pictures of our American families from years ago and when they pulled out the button box to play traditional songs my mother would have loved. One cousin Anita Jemec traveling to America on business went to Ellis Island and saw where her relatives had been remember on a plaque. Next summer my son, Chris, is planning a trip to Slovenia, and we are hoping to go again very soon.

    5. Are there any particular connections between Kansas and Slovenia

    www.washington.embassy.si

    http://washington.embassy.si/en/

  • Newsletter February 13, 2009 Page 3

that you want to especially point out?

I am especially proud of the Department of Slavic Languages at the University of Kansas and its department head, Marc Greenberg, which offers the only undergraduate four year degree in Slovenian in a major US University. Helping to fund students from Slovenia and from the USA in that program is high on my wish list as an Honorary Consul.

    Small Nations Poetry Reading

A growing Washington tradition now in its fifth year, the Small Nations Poetry Reading brings together the ambassadors of nine countries - Austria, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, and Slovenia. The ambassadors read poetry from the countries they represent, in English and in their native languages, reflecting a different theme each year.

For this year’s reading, the poems selected will be related to the environment, and the event will be followed by a reception.
