It is with deep regret that we’ve made the very sad decision to cancel the Clunes

Booktown Festival for May 2020, in light of the developing situation with COVID-19.

Like most events of this nature, we start advertising and marketing the event,

designing and printing collateral, booking acts and accommodation, along with hiring

equipment and venues many months in advance, and each day that passes those

expenses mount up. It would be irresponsible for us to allow that spend to continue

without the firm knowledge that the event would take place.

We are very disappointed to make this announcement but we have a duty of care to

staff, volunteers, traders, authors, artists and of course the general public.

As always we would like to thank the many volunteers who had already signed up to

assist. Such a great community response is always appreciated as the Festival couldn't

function without this help. Many of our local community groups use the Festival as a

fundraising opportunity and the financial loss will be difficult to recover.

All pre-purchased Festival and author talk tickets and site payments from our many

booksellers and food vendors will be refunded.

We will be working in the background to bring you the Clunes Booktown Festival

once everything has settled and it is safe to do so.

Any enquiries to the Festival Office on 03 5345 3947 or [email protected]

Thank you for your understanding.

12th April Market is Cancelled

It is with regret that the CTDA must announce the

Clunes Market over the Easter long weekend has

been cancelled ~

Considering the Government’s recommendations on

COVID-19, together with the uncertainty of these

times, we feel it would be irresponsible to hold our

Market this month. ~

Clunes is fortunate to have access to high-quality

produce through our local shops and businesses;

much of which is made or supplied locally. Many of

our traders are struggling through these difficult times

and are adapting their service to meet rapidly

changing community needs. They need your

continued patronage and support in the coming weeks

to keep Clunes a vibrant place to live in and visit. ~

The CTDA urge all community members and visitors

to continue to shop locally and take advantage of our

unique local stores and suppliers. Arrangements for

future Clunes Markets will be reviewed as more

information comes to light in this rapidly evolving

situation. ~

In the meantime, check out our refreshed website and

updated business listings

The CTDA thanks everyone for supporting Clunes

and our Market stallholders

Clunes Market Report for March

A fine day greeted a large crowd at last month’s

market. Due to illness the Crazy Ants were unable to

perform but a huge thanks to Scott Fraser for filling

in at the last minute and entertaining the crowd.

Thoughts go out to Bill Woda (Fancy Chooks) with

his operation and Eric from Mt Prospect who

suffered concussion in a workplace accident just

before the market.

Hope you both have a quick recovery.

Also two new stall holders attended the March

Market; Michael from Peewick Wines and Natash

from Gypsy Donuts, and the return of Marita from

Pink Muesli. Again a number of Makers Stalls

attended setting up in Collins Place

and Fraser Street.

Wood Raffle was a sell out and lucky winner for

March was Mary Atkinson from St Arnaud with

Ticket No 9 which was drawn by Diane Sargeant.

Thanks again to Craig & Cyn from the Clunes

Newsagency for the donation.

Clunes Tourism (CTDA) Website www.clunes.org

With Clunes getting so much tourism publicity lately, our visitation has increased and many more questions

are being asked; for e.g. “where can we stay”?

On doing some research on the internet, there are more accommodation places than you think; especially on

Air BnB.

We are more than happy to promote your business but we need your help

for this to happen.

Also we note on social media, people enquiring about local trade people, services and retailers.

Through the Clunes Tourism (CTDA) our website www.clunes.org has a Business Directory to ensure

local trader and retailers are promoted. It is easy to find.

Go to www.clunes.org click on “eat stay shop” where there will be a

“drop down”. Click onto one of these headings to make sure you are listed.

If your business is missing, just email us the details and we will be happy to add.

Clunes Former Free Library (aka The Mechanics Institute) By Phil Taig

Fund Raising at the March Clunes Market

On Sunday of the Labour Day weekend, the Committee of Management (COM) had a stall at Clunes Market. On sale were ceramics from local potters, an eclectic range of books, ‘Organic’ magazines, brightly coloured book bags and some bric a brac. All items were donated by local citizens who may now consider themselves ‘Friends of Clunes Free Library’ and the COM wishes to thank them for their generosity because market patrons snapped up much of what was on offer, with many feeling guilty at paying such low prices that they felt obliged to make a monetary donation. Proceeds from the Market stall have gone towards matching dollar for dollar a recent grant which will be used to install a new kitchen in the Clunes Free Library.

Vandal Damage

Photo shows the rear of the Clunes Free Library in Templeton Street. Vandals have sprayed graffiti on three brick walls which will take the COM hours to remove. Vandals entered the building through two smashed windows (shown at rear left covered with corrugated iron) and caused a great deal of damage inside that is being slowly rectified. This iconic heritage listed building has been largely forgotten over the past 67 years since the Library closed in 1953. It has been slowly crumbling through neglect but now is being rescued by the COM and deserves to be restored to once

again take its rightful place as one of the proud historic buildings constructed in Clunes, the first Victorian gold town.

Next Committee Meeting

In the past few years the Committee of Management of Clunes Former Free Library, (COM), has received a great deal of assistance from its ‘Friends of the Free Library’ in the local community for which it is very appreciative. It is now seeking to expand its Committee of five to help with ideas for restoring the building using funds that are expected from benevolent sources this year. There are no prerequisites other than some life experience and common sense, and no obligations other than one hour per month to attend a meeting. Why not come along to our next meeting and meet some new friends on Thursday 23rd April at the Free Library in Templeton Street, starting at 7:30 pm.

The Chairman of the Committee is Graeme Johnstone and he may be contacted on 0427 534 532 or via e-mail at ‘[email protected]

SECOND ANNUAL REUNION A HUGE SUCCESS By Dot Keller

Last year’s inaugural International Harvester Reunion was held in Clunes over the Labour Day long weekend in March. It proved to be a huge success which led to the decision to hold another one this year.

Over 30 ex-employees, dealers, staff and their wives

converged on Clunes. They came from Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and all over Victoria. The School of Mines building was the base for the weekend with people coming and going, some relaxing with a coffee and chatting about how things were over 40 years ago. Many a tall tale resonated throughout the building as well as in the grounds. Appropriately, the Historic Vehicle Show was on and as the majority of vehicles there were International Harvester, it was a huge drawcard.

Saturday night, an extremely enjoyable night was spent at the National Hotel where over dinner and a few drinks, more stories were recounted. Sunday morning everyone assembled at the SMB building where a group photo was taken.

After a day at the Truck Show on Sunday, everyone gathered at the hall and a BBQ was enjoyed by all. Local Clunes photographer Gary Sharp, managed to get another shot of the group, just as the sun slipped below the horizon, as well as candid shots in the hall.

Monday arrived all too soon and after an extremely enjoyable weekend, everyone said their farewells and headed back to their homes with 2021 reunion already in the pipeline.

CLUNES MUSEUM A HOME FOR YOUR HISTORY By James Curzon

BRINGING THE CANNON HOME

The professional conservator has now received the Museum’s “brief”. She has been given a list of possible sites and will make a recommendation taking into account preservation issues and the cannon’s historical significance. One interesting option is the cannon’s original location in Scenic Road in the vicinity of “The Rocks”. It had pride of place there until the 1944 bushfires when the wooden mounting carriage was destroyed. Thereafter, the barrel, all that remained, lay in the Council yard. After a long period of neglect, a new wooden carriage was built by the Bendigo Ordnance factory in 1985 using timber from a Clunes elm along the creek. Perhaps the Clunes cannon, donated to the Borough of Clunes in 1898, really will come home to its original location.

TOWN HALL BREAK IN UPDATE

Following the break in at the Town Hall in February, the Museum met with Stewart Ritchie, the Shire’s Facilities Manager, and a technician from SECTROL, the sub-contractor responsible for fire, smoke and security alarms at the Warehouse and the Town Hall. It’s a work in progress and, hopefully, improved security arrangements are in the pipeline.

BACK TO CLUNES 100th ANNIVERSARY

Over the next 5 years, there will be a raft of significant 100th and 150th anniversaries in Clunes. For example, April 20 is the 100th of the foundation of Country Townspeople’s League in the town hall, Clunes. The CTL were “decentralisationists” who wanted country industries to stem the drift of country populations to the big cities. As well, Nov 13 – 22 is the 100th anniversary of the first of the interwar “Back to Clunes” celebrations and the CTDA, to their credit, have organized discussions with interested retailers and groups like the Museum, to consider a Back To 100th anniversary program later this year. Interestingly, this ties in with a major conservation project at the Museum. We have been getting quotes for work on the magnificent photographic collage “Old Residents of Clunes” (currently on display upstairs in the Holly Barkell Gallery). This was presented to the citizens of Clunes by the Clunes in Melbourne Committee in 1902. This committee was formed in 1901 by Clunes “expats” who’d drifted away to Melbourne as the gold mines closed down in the 1880’s and 1890’s. They were heavily involved in planning many of the “Back Tos” which were held between the wars in 1920, 1925, 1927, 1930, 1933, 1936 and 1939. Unfortunately, professional conservation work on something like the “Old Residents” photo does not come cheaply. We’ve had estimates in the $20-30 thousand range. Maybe the proposed 100th anniversary of the first “Back To” will be an opportunity to fund raise towards this important project.

CLUNES IN PRINT EXHIBITION: CAN YOU HELP?

Despite the cancellation of this year’s Booktown, work continues on this exhibition which was to co-incide with the annual May Festival of the Book. We’ve mined the valley of gold and selected 15 books that reflect the history of Clunes and it’s community starting with Major Mitchell, on the top of Mt. Greenoch, musing how favourable it all was for large “sheep pasturage” in his 1836 “Three Expeditions Into the Interior of Australia”. Another classic we’ve chosen is “The Diary of a Welsh Swagman 1869-1894”, by Joseph Jenkins who worked many times on farms in the Clunes, Mt.Cameron, Glendaruel, Mt.Bolton, Coghill’s Creek, Ascot, Kingston and Smeaton area. It’s a fascinating window into a once numerous and vital occupation, the peripatetic farm labourer. As well as the “classics”, we’ve chosen the less well known. If you have a suggestion for the Clunes in Print booklist, please get in touch. It’s surprising how many well-written, well-researched family histories and memoirs are out there that are not widely known.

By Chris O’Donnell

Have you taken a walk along the creek recently? And did you know that our creek is part of the Murray-Gouburn Basin and therefore the

health and biodeiversity of our creek is extremely important. Clunes has its own Pinetum – look upwards in the park near the Government Bridge to see a variety of trees that make up this collection.

If you take a stroll along the creek walk between the Government Bridge and the Ford you might be lucky enough to see platypus, usually early in the morning or at dusk. Also rakali have been recently spotted. Like the platypus rakali are an amphibious land-based Australian mammal. They have broad, partially-webbed hindfeet, water-repellent fur and many whiskers, living in burrows on the bank and feeding on aquatic insects, fish, crustaceans, mussels, snails, frogs, birds' eggs and water birds.

Frog life is also abundant in the creek. Late in the year the Pobblebonk can be heard making their banjo twang noises and our creek is also home to the Growling Grass Frog whose habitat is being rapidly reduced due to urban sprawl.

The CLWG has also partnered with Hepburn Shire Council to have 3 pieces of static gym equipment installed near the ford later in the year.

Also Queens Park has been listed by the Council as a project for 2020 and we’ll certainly be involved in the community consultations.

The CLWG are often to be seen weeding, planting and mulching along the creek bank. This has been a major task since the 2011 floods but the hard work is starting to pay off with some areas now heavily populated with native grasses and trees having outgrown the reach of hungry wallabies. Of course we’re always looking for an extra pair of hands to help and we can find tasks suitable for anyone of any age.

If you’d like to join us or for more information please contact CLWG on [email protected] or via facebook at Clunes Landcare and Water Ways Group or Instagram @cluneslandcare.

Clunes Football Netball Club By Chris McLennan

Clunes Football Netball Club has experienced a very different pre season with training cancelled, practice matches cancelled and the season placed in recess until at least 31st May 2020. At these times it is important to remember that sport is a past time and we play for recreational purposes. We have constant messages getting placed onto Facebook and from coaches to players and members. Like everyone we are hopeful of re commencing the season at some stage.

We have seen some fantastic training sessions locally with our kids teams showing signs of increased numbers. Thanks to the coaches and parents for getting involved with our club. We had been doing plenty of work in recruiting and hope to see all the new and old faces return to training when we are advised that we can re-commence.

With our health system and economic world in distress it is important to heed advice from the relevant medical authorities. I wish all readers the best in the coming days, weeks and months as we find our way forward from the current situation that we find ourselves in. Look after yourselves and your families.

I look forward to sharing better news in the near future.
