1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Agricultural testing is the technical procedure of authenticating agricultural samples, process of
manufacturing, and storing agricultural products on farms to protect crops from chemical residue,
pathogens, and toxins. Agricultural tests are performed to supervise the quality and prevent unwanted
incidents of contamination of agriculture inputs, which will harm the total agricultural output of the region.
Agricultural safety regulations have been implemented across the globe due to the increasing growth of the
agriculture sector and to avoid any risk of contamination and spreading of infectious diseases that can
result in a decline of agricultural output.
The segmentation of the agricultural testing market is based on the sample type, application, and region.
The types of sample testing include soil testing, water testing, manure testing, compost testing, bio-solids
testing, seed testing, and others (greenhouse (soil-less) media, green roof media). The market is further
segmented on the basis of application for contaminants (toxin, chemical residue, pathogen, and others)
and quality assurance (chemical and physical). The agricultural testing market, by region, is segmented
into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of the World.
The key players in this market are SGS S.A. (Switzerland), Eurofins Scientific (Luxembourg), RJ Hill
Laboratories Ltd. (New Zealand), Bureau Veritas S.A. (France), and Intertek Group Plc. (U.K.). They use
strategies such as mergers & acquisitions and expansions & investments to strengthen their position in the
market. The key players focus on offering customized services for the detection of different contaminants
in agriculture.
The agricultural testing market was valued at $XX million in 2014 and is projected to reach $XX million by
2020, at a CAGR of XX% from 2015 to 2020. The growth of this market is primarily triggered by the
prevalence of growth of the agriculture sector and the demand for safety practices caused due to
increasing contaminants in agricultural samples. Moreover, the increasing regulations for agricultural
testing by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and
EUROPA are the key drivers of this market. However, lack of awareness among some farmers about these
regulations is restraining the growth of this market.

3 MARKET OVERVIEW
3.1 INTRODUCTION
North America and Europe are the major producers and exporters of agricultural products. Agriculture is
the most important resource that contributes a large share to the countries’ economy and growth.
Sustainable development of the agriculture sector depends on the development and maintenance of
analytical and testing services for various agricultural samples. Analytical services help to resolve major
problems related to soil fertility, available water quality for irrigational facilities, and nutrients essential for
growth and development in fields.
Standard agricultural practices dictate that land should be free of toxic components and rich in required
nutrients. This ultimately helps in getting the best agricultural products, which are safe and healthy. A wide
variety of agricultural samples are tested in the markets of North America and Europe, which are also
characterized by variable compositions. Testing of agricultural samples involves the evaluation of quality,
composition, ingredients, and suitability as per the quality of output to be derived from fields and it helps in
decision-making for the quality of inputs to be used after testing & analysis of samples.
Agricultural testing offers the following benefits:
Optimization of nutrient usage in fields
Formulation of suitable composition of ingredients to be supplemented
Improvement in total productivity
Avoiding contamination issues
3.1.1 QUALITATIVE & QUANTI TATIVE TESTING OF AGRICULTURAL SAMPLES
The testing of agricultural samples includes both qualitative and quantitative tests. Qualitative tests
provide information on the quality of samples based on their physical characteristics, such as color,
texture, odor, and density. These results may vary depending on the tests and individual opinions.
Quantitative tests are conclusive and sensitive. Advanced technologies such as high-performance liquid
chromatography (HPLC), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), liquid chromatography (LC), gas
chromatography (GC), and good laboratory practices (GLP) are used to conduct qualitative tests that
provide accurate quantitative information on the contents and contaminants in samples.

4 AGRICULTURAL TESTING MARKET, BY SAMPLE
4.1 SOIL TESTING
Soil testing is the analysis of a soil sample to determine nutrient and contaminated content, composition,
and other characteristics such as acidity or pH level. Soil testing helps to determine the fertility or the
expected enhancement of the soil, which indicates nutrient deficiencies, potential toxicities from excessive
fertility, and inhibitions due to the presence of non-essential trace minerals. It also helps in detecting
chemical properties that affect plant growth. Soil testing in is mainly done in commercial labs for analyzing
a variety of samples, which helps in judging the quantity of available nutrients in the sample, thereby
helping to determine the amount of fertilizer essential for the growth of plants. In most of the countries,
soil testing service is provided by government institutes at free of cost in order to promote environment-
friendly agricultural practices and production. Soil testing is an agronomic Best Management Practice
(BMP), which is recommended by the fertilizer industry, university agronomists, consultants, and farm
managers for continuous healthy and flourishing agriculture production.

5 AGRICULTURAL TESTING MARKET, BY APPLICATION
5.1 CONTAMINANTS
A wide range of contaminants originating from biological, chemical, and environmental sources are present
in agricultural samples. The risks posed due to contamination are low when it is inadvertent adulteration
from the surroundings or by natural pollutants. This is because the contaminants are likely to be identified
during quality and safety assurance. However, the risk is considerably high when the contamination is
deliberate. Contaminant testing assures safety and quality of agricultural products and can help in
prevention of diseases, or any hazards by chemical, microbiological, or physical adulteration. Due to this,
regulatory bodies such as the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) regularly test samples to
ensure the quality of output is good, hence deeming the agricultural practices efficient. To maintain high
standards of farm output and comply with health, safety, and environmental regulatory grades, it is best to
rely on agricultural testing through independent third parties such as laboratories, and certifications. Key
companies such as Eurofins Scientific (Luxembourg), SGS S.A. (Switzerland), and Intertek Group Plc. (U.K.)
offer testing services and certifications to ensure the quality and safety of products.
