a destination that reinvents itself
Puerto de la Cruz is a destination that reinvents itself to offer visitors a different and original experience when they come on holiday.
The port has had a busy commercial past, with sugar and wine from the island being exported to a flourishing Europe. Scientists and botanists from the continent were captivated by its spectacular landscape, its climate and its extraordinary sky, and it became a special place for health trips. Thanks to its friendly and cosmopolitan residents, it became a city at the forefront of culture on the island.
Puerto de la Cruz grew and was able to transform into a major European tourist destination. It is an enchanting city where visitors can enjoy the many experiences that nature on a volcanic island always has to offer.
What tourists want has changed radically and now they value authenticity and culture: traditional, natural and contemporary culture. They know how to design their own personalised, different and action-packed trips. Puerto de la Cruz is reinventing itself and has been able to become a benchmark for 21st century tourism.

the new marina and maritime park will boost the town's future
The Urban Planning Consortium for the Restoration of Puerto de la Cruz, established in 2010, was set up by the Spanish government's Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce through the Spanish Tourism Institute, the Canary Islands Autonomous Region, the Tenerife Island Council and the Puerto de la Cruz City Council with the aim of carrying out a series of actions for the restoration, modernisation and reinvigoration of tourism in Puerto de la Cruz.
It is the first of this kind in the Canary Islands, and integrates in one single plan the physical renovation of the destination, promotion and management as strategic cores, to become an operational way of actively renovating the destination.
The construction of the town's main project – the marina and the promenade – has been put out to tender in 2013. It will include a shopping area, sailing school, diving school, open-air auditorium, a thalassotherapy centre and car parks. This will undoubtedly boost the future of the city. This project will be added to the recently completed visitor centre at the Botanical Garden and the future extension of Loro Parque.
Since this process started, renovation and improvement works in public spaces have taken place. When the plan is finished there will be a total of 34 streets and 15 squares. The works are being carried out gradually in order not to disrupt people's everyday lives. In 2013 the works on the new bus station will start, as well as the renovation and construction of two of the eight cultural spaces that are included in the plan.
Hotels are also getting actively involved: 30 are being fully refurbished and 2 new hotels will be built in connection with the recovery of the Property of Cultural Interest, one of them 5*.
This ambitious plan stresses environmental quality, both natural and urban (improvement of public areas, the architectural and cultural heritage, pedestrianisation of the town centre and renovation of the historic quarter), and the quality of the services at the destination (with a quality programme that includes 15 sectors, with 150 member companies).

PUERTO DE LA CRUZXPERIENCE
Puerto de la Cruz's culture is bound to the island's volcanic history. It is a destination with an identity of its own in Europe, with a way of life that respects the area and its environment. Its aim is to attract active holidaymakers who are motivated by enjoyment of nature both on the sea and in the mountains, and to provide a wide-ranging offer of leisure options in the city, in an atmosphere that is ideal for anyone in search of a calm and peaceful place where they can stroll through its streets, go shopping and relax 365 days a year. What really makes Puerto de la Cruz
special is the leisure options and experiences it has to offer in incredibly beautiful surroundings, as well as its strategic location in the centre of the north coast of Tenerife, providing the perfect starting point for many trips.
In order to develop this specialised tourist destination, the Puerto de la Cruz Urban Planning Consortium, through Turismo de Tenerife, has created “Puerto de la Cruz Xperience”, a new promotional brand. A product club has been started up under this brand, including more than 90 high
quality tourist activity and accommodation companies. It is clearly geared towards urban tourism, active tourism holidays and small and medium-sized business tourism.

The city is situated in La Orotava Valley, which was formed by a volcanic landslide that took place millions of years ago. It is covered with vineyards, vegetable gardens and banana plantations.
• Although it is the smallest municipality in Tenerife – 8.7 square km –, it holds many attractions such as its protected historic quarter, and a large seafront, perfect for taking long and peaceful walks.
• It is situated in a strategic place in the north of Tenerife, surrounded by the sea and exuberant nature. It is the ideal starting point for many trips and activities on the island.
• There are two beaches in Puerto de la Cruz: Playa Martiánez and Playa Jardín (designed by César Manrique). Both have black sand, which proves their volcanic origin.
• It possesses the highest density of restaurants and shops on the island, offering endless possibilities for food and shopping.
• It has a stable climate: Average annual temperature of 20ºC.
• One of its trademarks is Loro Parque, the best and highest quality zoo in Spain, and a world benchmark.
• Lago Martiánez, also designed by the Canary Island artist César Manrique, is an outstanding area in Puerto de la Cruz, and has become an emblem of the city.
• With its multi coloured skies and the strong scent of the ocean, there are hidden spots bursting with luxuriant vegetation.
• It is close to Tenerife's main tourist attractions, two of which are World Heritage sites: the Teide National Park and the city of La Laguna.

12 Puerto de la Cruz Xperience
AN ENCHANTING CITY A special tourist
destination thanks to the city's landscape and climate
The history of this city is connected to the history of travelling, experience and tourism. The value of the charming corners of Puerto de la Cruz increases when we appreciate what many illustrious travellers experienced when they came here.
Historical and renowned figures have set foot in Puerto de la Cruz: Alexander Von Humboldt, who discovered a vast expanse of vegetation with Mt. Teide in the centre. Or Agatha Christie, who stayed at the Hotel Taoro, attracted by the British glamour of the city, and other writers such as William Wilde and Sir Richard Burton. André Breton was brought by the contemporary art curator Eduardo Westerdahl. The latter donated his collection to the museum named after him, for the first international Surrealism exhibition. Or the Beatles, who took a walk along Playa Martiánez beach and El Lido.
It is a special place to be thanks to the vegetation, landscape and climate. To enjoy a cup of coffee in the Risco Bello or the water lily garden; Sitio Litre, where even today you can have a cup of English tea in a 19th century orchid garden, or the Taoro park, where you can watch the spectacular sunset over the city.
But there is one place that is truly representative of Puerto de la Cruz: Punta del Viento, the top of the Paseo de San Telmo, "Where the wind turns". "A combination of wind and salty air, typical of the open sea, which in an instant becomes water, swell, completely pure waves: the scent of the sea".
The historic quarter of Puerto de la Cruz, which is pedestrianised, includes over 140 protected buildings and large houses. It is all mixed with the hotel architecture of the 1960s. An open shopping area next to the sea, gardens bursting with exuberant subtropical vegetation, and a volcanic seafront that fills the air of the city with a scent of salt and the sound of the fierce Atlantic Ocean, from Martiánez to Punta Brava. A botanical garden. A swimming pool complex – Lago Martiánez – and a beach – Playa Jardín – designed by the brilliant artist César Manrique. And Playa de Martiánez, perfect for surfing and landing of paragliders.
All these assets make for personalised holidays, with multiple combinations, offering travellers a different stay.

place on the island
Nature on the island is spectacular and it can be enjoyed from Puerto de la Cruz. 48% of Tenerife is protected land and it is an oasis of life that provides a home to more than 800 endemic animal and plant species. In fact, the Anaga massif has the largest biodiversity in Europe. And the island is the only place where you can watch wild cetaceans all year round, three miles off the coast.
Tenerife and its natural landscape are also privileged for many other reasons. Mt. Teide is the highest peak in Spain and the Earth's third loftiest volcano. The island is a unique place to observe all the vulcanological processes that take place on Earth. One of them is El Viento Cave, running for 18 kilometres – the longest lava tube in Europe.
Over 1,000 km of trails (some certified and some in the process of being certified), one of the clearest skies on the planet which is perfect for stargazing, and a mild and stable climate all year round, with 3,000 hours of sunlight a year, complete the offer
that make Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz an all-round holiday destination.
Loro Parque is part of Puerto de la Cruz. It is a zoo and a tropical botanical garden at the same time, and “Orca Ocean” is one of its main shows. It possesses the largest collection of parrots in the world, with 300 species. Loro Parque develops conservation and breeding programmes for species in danger of extinction, and it also houses the largest penguin park in the world, the largest dolphinarium in Europe, a sea lion show and an aquarium with a 20-metre underwater tunnel.
The Botanical Garden, created in 1788, has important collections of tropical and subtropical plants, especially the following varieties: palm trees, Bromeliaceae, Araceae and Moraceae. Its new visitor centre will be opening soon.

ACTIVE TOURISM The options for carrying out activities
and sports outdoors in Puerto de la Cruz and the surrounding area are endless. What's more, Puerto de la Cruz is the ideal place to practice and discover sports safely for the first time. These are the main options:
ParaglidingParagliding will show you the city from the sky. You can take off on a two-seater paraglider from the top of the nearby Los Realejos to enjoy the pine-covered mountains that roll down from the Teide towards La Orotava Valley, and land in Plaza de Martiánez beach. Or you can go down from Teide National Park to Puerto de La Cruz in 30 minutes. It is the only paragliding trip in Europe that goes from 2,100 metres to sea level in just 13 km.
HikingThere are many trails but from the city centre there are two that go towards La Orotava coast to the east and to Los Realejos to the west. The trails in this area take you through a wide variety of settings, climates, atmospheres and difficulty levels.
BikingBoth the tracks in Corona Forestal and in La Esperanza hill offer different difficulty levels, and the most demanding tracks are on the different routes in the north. Another great experience for adventurers is to ride all around the Teide National Park (cycling inside it is not permitted, though).
Routes to learn about volcanoesThey take place in the Teide National Park and aim to explain about the volcanic activity and the most important geological formations. They combine scientific and adventure tourism aspects.
StargazingIt is an increasingly popular activity with visitors which can be practised in the Teide National Park, with specialised guides and star charts. CavingEl Viento Cave (Icod de los Vinos) is the longest labyrinthine lava tube in the world (18 km) and enables visitors to understand the role of lava flows in volcanoes. It has three levels of passageways and beautiful geomorphological phenomena.
ClimbingThere are more than 900climbing routes, and different styles are possible: classic and sport climbing, clean climbing and artificial climbing walls. The large areas are well equipped, and this activity continues to grow in small sectors that are gradually being equipped until getting the most out of the rock and the level.
Sports tourismPuerto de la Cruz is also the perfect place to begin or to improve your golfing technique at a Pitch & Putt in the city and on two nearby courses, one designed by designed by Ballesteros. And you can practice tennis and paddle tennis, with programmes that are tailored to your holidays.

Puerto de la Cruz also offers many options to stay active in the water:
Surfing and paddle boardingPlaya de Martiánez, thanks to its layout and medium swell, is an ideal beach for practising surfing and paddle boarding. This beach is perfect for learning and it has sports schools. Playa del Socorro is a excellent beach for more experienced surfers. Punta Brava sees waves of up to ten metres high on a few days each year.
Natural poolsThe shallows of San Telmo are natural pools that the locals have traditionally used to go bathing (although it is not possible when the tide is high).
Volcanic beachesPlaya Jardín and Playa de Martiánez are beaches with character because of the black sand. Playa Jardín and San Telmo also boast the blue flag that the European Foundation for Environmental Education awards for quality.
Underwater divingBoats set off daily from the quay with divers and it is a preferred spot for introductory courses. One of the most spectacular locations in the area is La Rapadura, an underwater lava tube that is only suitable for experienced divers.
KayakingIt is another active tourism option in Puerto de la Cruz, especially at night, when people can enjoy the silhouette of the city from the sea, La Orotava Valley and the shape of Mt. Teide in the background.

CULTURE, TRADITIONS AND FESTIVALS
Puerto de la Cruz is a dynamic city with many cultural events on the calendar.
The International Street Art Festival (MUE-CA) takes place over a long weekend in May. The street becomes a stage, and thea-tre, music, dance, film and other plastic arts fill the city.
The Bavarian Week takes place at the end of August and beginning of September, with German gastronomy, beer and music as the main protagonists. It is a fun and recreational time when tourists and locals get together.
The Agatha Christie Festival is held in Nov-ember and brings together film and litera-ture, making Puerto de la Cruz the setting for the best crime and mystery novels. It recalls the periods that the author spent in this corner of Tenerife. The historic San Felipe Castle, the Institute of Hispanic Studies and other venues hold periodical cultural events. Visitors can also enjoy regular musical events in hotels, such as Buena Música in the Astoria-Bambi
(from October to March-April), concerts in unique settings (Casa Ábaco Museum) and spectacular musicals in Isla del Lago.
The Festival Jazz & Más Heineken is highly recommended. It is one of the most presti-gious cultural events in the Canary Islands.
Popular festivals are celebrated all year round. February is the month of the carni-val. It is very interesting and international, with the entertaining male high heels ma-rathon "Mascarita ponte tacón".
The Exaltación de la Cruz festival takes pla-ce on 3 May. To celebrate the foundation of the city, around 200 crosses in chapels or attached to buildings are adorned with flowers, and people can go and see them round the city.
On the eve of 24 June, the festival of San Juan, bonfires are lit on the beach, public fountains are decorated with plants and fruit, and herds of goats are bathed in the fishing quay, to remember ancient aborigi-nal customs.
On 16 July, the patron saint's day of Virgen del Carmen and Gran Poder de Dios is ce-lebrated. It is the city's main festivity. The programme of traditional events includes the Embarkation of the Virgin at the old quay, and people come from all over the island to see it.
On 29 November, Los Cacharros Festival, the most interesting and unique festivity in honour of San Andrés, commemorates the old celebration of opening the wineries and tasting the new wine for the first time, to the clatter of all kinds of tin cans and pots down the street.

ENJOY CULTURE THAT IS ALIVE
There are many restaurants scattered all over the city: small, varied, where you can feel at home. Enchanting corners and balconies overlooking the sea, offering fresh fish with potatoes and Canary Island "mojo" sauce, and the traditional desserts that islanders love. But there are also restaurants where visitors can taste signature cuisine and discover the island's best wines. This wide range of quality
products and different types of cuisine is typical of Puerto de la Cruz. It is hard to find other places that offer this variety in such a convenient space. This combination enables visitors to rediscover the strong relationship of this city with millions of travellers who have set foot here since it was established as a commercial port.

26 Puerto de la Cruz Xperience
Puerto de la Cruz is the perfect place for conferences, conventions and incentive trips. All kinds of events can be organised here, but especially those involving science – vulcanology, psychology, botany and tourism. Thanks to its climate, varied landscape, easy access to a wide range of natural resources and different types of active tourism companies, it is an excellent place to complement work sessions with many activities in nature.
The city's conference centre, with capacity for up to 1,000 people, is situated in Taoro Park. It is surrounded by vegetation, where
the peace and quiet is only interrupted by peacocks who roam freely in the grounds. Business meetings in Puerto de la Cruz are the real thing: small groups staying in hotels in the city centre, attending meetings in large historic houses with character, and exploring all the city and the island have to offer in their free time.
As well as the conference centre, there are ten specialised hotels, and different emblematic venues for meetings: Lago Martiánez; the Botanical Garden, where many original events have taken place surrounded by unique plant species; San
Felipe Castle, an old fortress turned into a multifunctional venue; and Sitio Litre, a 19th century English garden which used to welcome British travellers and artists.
Also available are large ancient houses such as Ábaco or La Gañanía, which are perfect for business meetings in a setting steeped in history and with the exuberant vegetation of La Orotava Valley overlooking the sea.

RELAX AND ENJOY
The favourite place for Europeans looking to improve their health
29Puerto de la Cruz Xperience
Thanks to the average annual temperature in Puerto de la Cruz and the mild weather in winter and summer, the city became the favourite place for Europeans looking to improve their health.
The main building which is specifically dedicated to this purpose is The Oriental Spa Garden, situated in Hotel Botánico 5*GL. Considered to be one of the best in Europe, it is an excellent option. Another interesting spa is Spa & Wellness Centre, situated on the 14th floor of Hotel Beatriz Atlantis & Spa 4*, under a beautiful transparent dome.
But for many decades, tourists have been enjoying a wide range of places outdoors which enable them to get the most out of this wonderful climate. After the Spanish tourists, the Germans are the main tourists in Puerto de la Cruz, and 78% of them like to go hiking. Thanks to the special climate in Puerto de la Cruz, where the sun is often diffused by clouds, tourists can sunbathe on the beach and next to the swimming pool, and walk for long hours down the country paths without being in great danger of getting sunstroke.
Taoro Park is the small but important sports centre in the city, where children and adults alike come to run and practice sports.
Playa Jardín beach is a place where you can sunbathe, but also practice team sports at sunrise, and at sunset it becomes a bustling city hub. The seafront, from Avenida de Colón to Plaza del Charco, through Paseo de San Telmo, is also perfect for a relaxing daily walk.
