PUKENUI SCHOOL DESCRIPTION Pukenui School is a full primary school, serving the educational needs of the children of the local community. The school is located on the west side of town and is on the fringe between town and country. The Pukenui School community extends from Pureora to Waitomo.

Te Kuiti is steeped in Māori history. We are a strong Māori community based school with grandparents who are Kaumatua that the school may source for matters of history / protocol, to better equip our students in their progress, engaging their learning and contribution to society. The school Whanau community associates with a number of local marae. A feature of the school is our school wide powhiri and kapa haka group. Māori students comprise 72%, Samoan (7%) and other 21% of the current roll. We are a multicultural learning community. The Board of trustees sees Pukenui School as a modern, well-resourced school with quality, caring, and dedicated staff. Pukenui School provides child centred education tailored to the needs and abilities of the students. A wide range of support programmes for children with special needs are catered for by teachers and three experienced para-professionals. Major developments to the school’s property have occurred over recent years. Physically the school comprises of 8 classrooms, break out spaces , modern administration block, library, numerous office spaces, two courts and Astroturf, swimming pool, two adventure playgrounds, sandpit and large playing fields, all set in landscaped grounds. A large community stadium and theatre next door to the school are available for hire. Parental involvement in school activities is encouraged. The school’s involvement in the community and the family atmosphere are special qualities of the school.

Pukenui School provides a wide range of learning experiences which meet the needs and abilities of the pupils. The school responds to the bicultural / multicultural and diverse needs of all students. The Board will take all reasonable steps to provide instruction in te reo Māori and tikanga Māori for all students whose parents ask for it.

Pukenui School Strategic Plan 2017-2019

1. Curriculum:

1. To provide students with a high quality teaching and learning programmes from the NZ curriculum focused on innovation, curiosity, enquiry, participation, excellence.

2. To provide students with opportunities to achieve success in many areas – Academic, Sporting, , The Arts, Leadership, Cultural – so they are confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners

3. Acceleration of student achievement in Literacy – reading, spelling, Written Language and Math. Professional development 2017 – PB4L Yr 2, Continue Teaching as Inquiry Staff development, ICT / ILE development, Enviro Schools

4. Ongoing: draft / design / development of learning area plans and implementation for NZ / School and Localised curriculum. Development of NZC - key competencies, values, principles

5. That programmes/planning and assessment practices will identify and provide for students not or at risk of not achieving / with special needs / abilities / ESOL students.

2. Documentation and Self Review: 1. The BOT will review the strategic plan so it reflects the direction we plan to take. 2. Student achievement is part of the annual review process – National Standards .reporting –

alignment with Assessment tools, moderation and triangulation of data for OTJ

3. Annual targets will be set for identified groups in Literacy and Maths – Māori / Pasifika 4. Annual reporting of any trends and patterns of student achievement will be made through the

Board.

5. Reporting on the achievement of Māori students, particularly boys will be part of the

curriculum review process 6. Reporting to parents on their individual child/children’s performance will be student based

through student learning portfolios / e-portfolios and Student Learning Conferencing 7. The school will establish a cycle of review related to policies and procedures, curriculum plans

and programmes. 8. Integrate NZC and National Standards, into Pukenui School/ Maniapoto localised curriculum.

4. Finance and Property:

1. Funds from the 2015 -2017 5YA and 10Y property plan and Maintenance Programme will be available for designated projects and ongoing maintenance.

2. Review our school Financial system 3. An annual budget will be set which will reflect the school’s

areas of priority. 4. To monitor and control the school’s expenditure and to ensure

the annual accounts are prepared and audited as legally required.

5. Recommendations from the Audit will be actioned. 6. To ensure the school buildings and facilities provide a safe and

healthy environment. 7. The Parent Support group will be a fund raising body and

organisation building a spirit of teamwork with the school community.

8. Innovative learning environments - Teaching and learning to reflect the needs of the school and the changing needs of education and society.

9. Maintain ICT infrastructure and capability within school to align to the digital needs of students and staff. Development of an ICT plan –link to Waitomo Community Trust, evolving digital needs of students and staff

PUKENUI SCHOOL - WRITING TARGET 2017

STRATEGIC GOAL: 1 1. Develop and implement consistent school wide practices in the teaching and

assessment of Literacy – Writing school-wide, Trial essential lists for spelling, AsTTle assessment and moderation

Our target is to move the majority of students in the Below cohorts in all Year levels to At, while having all students engaged and accelerating in their learning and understanding of writing knowledge for their year level.

BASELINE DATA: National Standard data 2015 Out of our 25 target students Time 1 0% are AT standard, 76% are BELOW standard, 24% are WELL BELOW Time 2 56% are now AT standard, 32% are now BELOW standard, 12% are still WELL BELOW standard Included in these figures were two students who have poor attendance of which are being addressed and another student whom we are trying to have an ORS application accepted.

General Aim: To continue development of local curriculum based on the NZC. Looking at our local area to develop learning areas in authentic contexts, then compare Nationally and Internationally/Globally for concept development. Environmental / Māori ways of caring for the local area.
