Turn your outdoors intoanother room where you canrelax and entertain. GGabrielleFagan finds out how to createthe perfect space with thelatest fabulous furniture

f ever there was a time tomake the most of youroutdoor space, its thisyear.

Tight budgets and thethreat of viruses, as well as

a growing reluctance to stamp acarbon footprint all over theglobe, will almost certainly resultin more of us enjoying time inour own gardens this summer.

Fortunately, the choice ofgarden furniture and accessorieshas never been better, and theres

no longer any need to settle foruncomfortable, wobbly seats or aconventional dining set.

Liz Murphy, associate editor ofHouse Beautiful, says: Once thedomain only of the keengardener, our gardens havebecome extensions of our homes.

Most of us rush to sit outside atthe first glimpse of springsunshine, and we want our gardensto feel as comfortable as our livingrooms, equipped with everythingfrom sofas to coffee tables.

Open-plan kitchens opening onto decks and patios is anestablished trend, she points out,and this creates the need for theview from the back of the houseto look as good as the front.

Rather than grabbing the firstsunlounger or patio set you see,she advises that when planning aroom outdoors, you start from thesame basic point as you wouldwhen creating an indoors room.

Liz says: Decide what you wantthe room to do, and how muchlight it gets. If you want anoutside dining area and yourgardens in full sun overlunchtime, make sure to includelots of shade.

In the short term, this may bean awning or huge parasol, but alonger term solution could be anarbour which, if you plantclimbing vines to cover it, it willlook gorgeous and give far more

    shadethan anumbrella.

Newmaterials such asweather-resistant rattan havebanished the chore of rushingaround covering up furniture atthe first sign of a shower, or theneed to store it.

If your priority is to lounge, rather than eat, Liz suggestsopting for comfy living room-stylefurniture like large, squashy sunloungers or a corner unit.

Dont neglect all-importantfinishing touches like lighting, she urges, adding: Solar-poweredground and fairy lights willgradually begin to twinkle asdarkness falls, creating a softglow to eat by.

Use lamps, lanterns andcandles to highlight particularfeatures in your garden, such as a

beautiful tree, bush, orpretty seating area.Add scented candles tofill the air withfragrance.

Spruce up yourpatio by choosing from

this selection of someof the best outdoorfurniture and

    accessories.

Whatever you drive normally, when itcomes to your wedding, youll want tobe chauffered around in a smart set ofwheels. Brian Saunders, proprietor ofBrisan Carriages, steers us in the rightdirection for choosing the right car

risan Carriages wasestablished in 1996,and since then thefleet has expanded toalmost 30 vehicles.Based in Cuffley,

EN6, its area of operation coversHertfordshire, Essex, Middlesexand most London postaldistricts.

The range of professionallychauffeured, high qualityvintage, classic and modernRolls Royce and Bentleywedding cars, supported bycolour co-ordinated Daimler andMercedes seven-passengerlimousines, can meeteverybodys taste and budget. The vast majority of the cars aregaraged in Cuffley, in a well-litbuilding, where it is stronglyrecommended that clients viewthem either in the daytime orevening by appointment, beforebooking the cars.

Ive just got engaged and want tobook a car for my wedding howdo I know which one to go forr?Brian says: The wedding cars andtheir chauffeurs play an integraland important role on yourspecial day and should beconsidered as more than justtransport.

There are many chauffeur-driven car hire businessesoperating in the wedding sectorbut it is important to select thosecompanies that have an in-depthknowledge of the requirementsand traditions of the Jewishmarket which vary quiteconsiderably from the manyother types of religious and civilceremonies.

There are many different typesof bridal cars available but themost popular choice for Jewishcouples are Rolls Royce andBentley models from which youcan choose vintage (mainly

  • 1930s), classic (late 1940s to1970s) or modern (1980s tocurrent). You can choose a carwhich caters perfectly to thebride and grooms tastes.

If the wedding is to take placeduring the hot summer monthsand the journey to the place ofceremony is to takeapproximately 45 minutes ormore, then a car with air-conditioning may be high on thebrides list of requirements.

By definition a late classic ormodern car is recommendedwhere air-conditioning systemswere fitted as standard.

Invariably the later cars do nothave the character of the vintageand early classic models and sothe external appearance andcharacter of the car may behigher on the agenda than thecomfort of a modern AC system. It should be borne in mind, however, that most of the vintageand classic cars have an airflowsystem and also, as they travel atmodest speeds, a partial openingof the windows will ensurecomfort without risk to thebrides hairdo.

Interior space is also an issueand although there is adequatespace in all models, a bride whowants maximum room andcomfort should choose a vintage, long wheel base or limousinemodel.

Should I book one car or two what does it depend on?Brian says: Support vehicles tothe main wedding car (mainlyfor the bridesmaids and thegrooms party) are normallyDaimler or Mercedes limousinesthat can carry up to sevenpassengers. It is recommendedthat you choose a company that

can provide support vehicles inthe same livery as the mainwedding car for greater effect onthe day.

The majority of Jewishweddings follow the traditionwhere the bride travels in themain wedding car to theceremony, with both her motherand the mother of the groom, and the brides father travelswith the grooms party. It iscommon, therefore, to use one ofthe support vehicles to carry outthe transfer between both pick-up addresses. This service isnormally provided in thestandard price of the car or for avery small nominal charge whichreflects the time and distanceinvolved.

What is your most popular carrand why do you think this is?Brian says: The most popularmain wedding car is the RollsRoyce Silver Cloud.

I have three white Silver Cloud111s pure white, porcelainwhite and acrylic white (thecreamiest of the whites) and aSilver Cloud 11 in black overivory. This car is a rare long-wheel base model.

These cars date from the earlyto mid 1960s and are, arguably, the most elegant of the classiccars combining space andcomfort as well as charm andcharacter. In the photographsthey look fantastic outside anytype of venue.

The Silver Clouds are alwayssupported by colour matchingDaimler Limousines whichcompliment them perfectly.

Close behind the Silver Cloudsare the 1930s vintage RollsRoyces which are absolutelystunning. Despite their age we

are happy to drive them thesame distances as the other carsincluding into central London.

What is the standard number ofhours a car can be booked forand are there any extrasincluded in the price?Brian says: The tariff is based ona three-hour hire time withadditional time over and abovethree hours chargeable at 50per vehicle per hour; although ifthere are several cars required apackage price is normally given.

The timing of the arrival at thefirst pick-up address and timeallowed for the individualmovements of the cars is key toan efficient operation on the day.As a general rule, the groom andhis party should arrive at thesynagogue 45 minutes before theceremony for photographs, prayers etc and the bride 15minutes before to allow for thebedeken - but depending on thedifferent requirements on theday this may vary.

The time allowed for eachjourney should be generous toallow for possible hold-ups.Travelling into central London ona Sunday is a slow process. It isalways easier to park up and killtime if necessary rather than tryto make it up.

I want a car that will stand outfrom thee crowd what do yousuggest?Brian says: I believe that the carsthat really catch the eye are thecars at the extreme ends of thetime spectrum.

The 1930 vintage cars arespectacular and always receiveadmiration from all who seethem.

However, I now have a new

Rolls Royce Phantom in the rangewhich is equally spectacular fordifferent reasons and has provedto be extremely popular.

I have quite a low budget whatis your recommendation for acredit crunch friendly car?Brian says: The Rolls RoyceSilver Shadow is at the bottomend of the price range. It is,however, a beautiful classicwhite Rolls Royce from the1970s with all the refinementsof a modern car including airconditioning. It is an ideal mainbridal car which can besupported, if necessary, with aseven-passenger classicMercedes or Daimler Limousine.

    DONT FORGET...

    1) To decide what your priorities are(i.e air conditioning), which will alsoinclude the budget allowed normallydetermined by the grooms side.

    2) To arrange who is to travel with thebride to the ceremony, to allow timefor a transfer between the grooms andbrides addresses if necessary.

    3) To plan a detailed timetable so thatthere is a margin for error in the traveltimes. The wedding car operatorshould be involved to help with this.

    4) To book an appropriate number ofcars with the seating capacity requiredto carry out the job efficiently andcomfortably.

    5) It is recommended that you use acompany that can provide matchingcars for greater visual effect.

  • ith so anyrestaurants tochoose fromnowadays, onestarts to wonderwhether weve

really gained anything in culinaryterms? Too many chefs seem to takewonderful fresh ingredients andthen seem to do their utmost todisguise the flavours.

Take steak, for example. So oftenjust mediocre meat served to themasses rather than a charcoal-cooked quality cut that comes froma speciality kitchen.

I was therefore happy to comeacross Goodman a proper

American steakhouse, which wasjust what the doctor (or so I toldmyself) ordered after a long, hardday at the park. Named after Jewishjazz legend Benny Goodman, themoment I stepped into this Mayfairestablishment, I truly felt that Identered a little slice of the States.

The interior as a whole isimpressive brown is thedominant colour, and teamed withclever lighting and wooden floors,Goodman exudes the aura of an eralong gone. Indeed, it felt as if Bennyhimself might burst in at anymoment.

Rest assured, he didnt. What didshow up though was great food. For

starters, I tucked into the organicsalmon carpaccio with tomatoseeds, passion fruit and sea salt, which was light but nonthelesspacked with flavour the passionfruit was a great twist that elevatedthe dish. My dining partner wentfor a more classic choice of slicedtomato, crumbled stilton, redonion and aged balsamic vinegarwhich proved just as good inquality, freshness and taste.

Mains though were the realreason for coming to Goodman, and we were spoilt for choice. Thesteaks are cooked to order in aspecial charcoal oven, and thesweet smell of the choice cutsfilled the restaurant.

We knew we were in for a treat. My Goodman rib eye was sodelicious, I nearly cried. Fourhundred grams of USDA primebeef, 120 days grain fed providingthe perfect flavoursome and juicycut, and complemented to a tee bythe pepper sauce I chose as anaccompaniment.

My partner, meanwhile, optedfor the delicious fillet, whichcomprised 250g from UK grass-fedAngus cattle. Again, a perfect cut, itsimply melted in the mouth. Healso opted for a divine mushroomsauce and hand cut chips crispyyet light, just as the ideal chipshould be.

We were fit to burst so took a

good while before ordering dessertsbut we were not disappointed oncethey arrived: my warm chocolatefondant with vanilla bean ice-cream was scrumptious as I cutthrough the fondant, the chocolatecentre melted out on to the placeand merged with the ice-cream tocreate the most amazing mixtureof taste, texture and temperature. My partner was delighted with his

baked vanilla cheesecake whichcame with a berry compote, whichlooked creamy yet not too heavy.

It is easy to see why Goodman issuch a success: excellent service, great decor, a classic Americantheme, a central location and, letsnot forget, quality ingredientscooked to perfection the ultimaterecipe for restaurant success.
