WelcomeMs Lodrick! In January, the Kent College community was delighted to welcome Ms Julie Lodrick as our new Headmistress. Ms Lodrick was formerly Principal of The Mount School in York, a day and boarding school for girls, having been in post since 2009. Ms Lodrick has had a wealth of experience in independent schools and her previous roles have included Deputy Head, Housemistress and Head of Music. She has practice of working within the Methodist group of schools through her time at Queenswood in Hertfordshire.

“My vision is that the girls of Kent College finish their education with a ‘critical consciousness’ of the world around them and are encouraged to seek to improve the lives of others.Kent College Pembury, affectionately known as KC, is already a happy, thriving girls’ day and boarding School, where the Methodist ethos is tangible and I will continue to foster this atmosphere. I would like the School to continue to provide a liberating and adventurous education for its pupils. “

“It is important that KC continues to be equipped with modern and up to date facilities to support the girls’ learning and personal development. Academic standards are high and together with the academic staff, I will continue to ensure that Kent College delivers the very highest level of education that is fully rounded, balanced and enables the girls to achieve their potential. It is wonderful that there are outstanding opportunities for enrichment and success in the sports and the arts at KC, which help to prepare the girls for a fulfilling and culturally diverse life. I think it is important that the School continues to offer as broad an experience as possible to enable the girls to aim high and fulfil their dreams and ambitions.”

Boarding

Boarding lies at the heart of Kent College. In the Autumn term we planted a cedar tree as part of the nationwide Boarding Orchard initiative launched by the Boarding Schools Association in 2014. The tree symbolises the ‘tree of knowledge’ and we chose a cedar tree to celebrate the memories of some of our Old Girls who remember when the school grounds were adorned by a glorious cedar, which sadly fell during the Great Storm of 1987.

Dazzling Delight at Boarder’s Charity Ball “The Boarders Ball is about helping others, with proceeds going to charities including Oxfam. It helps us appreciate how fortunate we are to be healthy and able to enjoy each other’s company in a safe and welcoming community.”Pimorn Supavarasuwat, Head of Boarding Prefect.

The Years 7-9 production of this Herman Melville classic was a fantastic achievement for all involved, with stunning costumes, atmospheric set and first class performing arts talent.

Billy Budd KS3 Production

“For me, the dramatic highlight of the year was our Year 6 performance of Monkey Business, written by Mr Snowball. For the first time, the year 6 production was in the Theatre. This presented a real challenge as the girls had to project their voices to fill the large space and impress an audience including Ms Lodrick, some school governors, the Mayor and Mayoress, and most frighteningly our parents! It is true to say that this experience will live with us forever; it is one that I will truly never forget.” – Milly Lipman, Year 6.

Kent College commemorated the Battle of the Somme with a week-long interactive storytelling display in the Library and with a Performing Arts evening on Friday 1st July entitled ‘Home Fires’.

The content for both the storytelling display and evening of Performing Arts was collated by English and Film teacher Keir Hoffmann from memories, artefacts and reflective contributions from members of the KC community and their families including girls, staff, parents, former pupils and Pembury village. The evening was a great success with moving performances from the girls across a variety of mediums including poetry, dance, drama and music.

Tanya Landman may have won the Carnegie Medal but it was the stories of Tilly, her pet pot-bellied pig, that really fascinated Years 7-9. Year 10 benefitted from Tanya’s expertise in creative writing workshops where they produced some blood curdling work in the detective genre. Many girls reserved a book and were able to chat informally to Tanya about her other historical novels at the book signing session.

Boarders’ International Evening

National Boarding Celebrations

Boarding

In April, the boarders enjoyed the annual International Evening, organised by Mrs Kruschandl and the H&H Boarding Team. Each table was decorated to represent a continent and was adorned with decorations and party dress-up goodies.

“This is a very popular event in our calendar, it’s always such a delight to see how proud the girls are of their cultures.” – Mrs Krushandl, H&H Housemistress.

As part of our celebrations for National Boarding Week, we welcomed former boarders for a celebratory tea with the current Junior boarders. The girls were fascinated to hear tales from ladies who were boarders up to sixty years ago. We were also delighted to welcome Old Girl Jane More who gave an assembly to the Prep and Senior schools about her time as a boarder. To finish the week of celebrations, the Junior Boarding House opened its doors and welcomed girls from Year 4 for a boarding taster night. Many left feeling very proud that they had slept away from home for the first time.

“The Year 4 Sleepover was the best sleepover I have ever been on because I was in a dorm with my best friends.” – Harriet Lamont.

This event is held every year for girls in Years 10, 11 and the Sixth Form and offers girls a valuable opportunity to hear from recent leavers about the higher education and career paths they have taken since leaving Kent College. This year our speakers gave girls a detailed insight into careers in Law, Science and Finance.

Celebrations Grandparents’ Day at KC PrepThis summer we celebrated our KC Prep Grandparents and were delighted to welcome so many of them for assembly, tea and lessons. All Grandparents behaved very well for their day at school – gold stars all round!

A Right Royal OccasionKent College Pembury enjoyed a sun-filled afternoon of celebratory activities to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday. Girls enjoyed making royal bunting which decorated the outside space for their tea party, along with portraits of the Queen created by girls in Years 7-9. They also made Royal Family masks for a special family portrait which was followed by a celebratory Tea Party and a royal quiz, before the arrival of a very special guest (many thanks to Mr Kirk-Burgess for his showmanship as the Queen!)

In the Prep school, girls performed plays, songs, raps and poems for the Queen as well as creating beautiful crowns and Lego palaces that the Queen would marvel in. All girls were presented with a medal to celebrate the Queen’s birthday, a kind gift from the Parents’ Association which the girls were very proud to wear.

Young Fashion Designer UKThis year we were thrilled to have a record breaking number of entries for the Young Fashion Designer UK national competition (south centre) which was established by Kent College Pembury in 2010 to recognise talented Textiles students at GCSE, AS & A Level. We were delighted to welcome 18 finalists, shortlisted from the original 175 entries, as well as 10 professional judges from fashion and textiles industries. Judging took place throughout the day alongside student workshops in technical design and shirt manipulation, before the Awards ceremony. Kent College was particularly over the moon as three of our girls scooped all of the Awards in the GCSE category! Huge congratulations to Rosie Nicholson-Grime who achieved 1st place, Beth Peachey who achieved 2nd place and Jessie Brown who achieved 3rd place.

We estimate that completion will be in the October half-term and look forward to playing on the pitch in due course. Once again, a huge thank you to all our donors for making KC’s long-awaited dream a reality.
