ELECTROMAGNETIC SIMULATION

Electromagnetic Simulation:the first step to optimize power transformer and inductor design

What is possible to doWith a dedicated software tool by using finite element method we are able to:

• view space distribution of electromagneticfields and quantities: flux lines, magnetic field(see fig. 1), induction (see fig. 2), energy...

• know current distribution in every conductor(see fig. 3);

• insert an external circuit beforeand after the transformer/inductor(e.g.: forward, half-bridge, full-bridge topology, pfc…) and to useany input waveform;

• calculate in time domain windinglosses (joule and eddy current losses taking intoaccount skin and proximity effects) and core losses(see fig. 4);

• evaluate maximal internal temperature to help customers inthermal management (see fig. 5).

Why simulation?�� Power transformer losses are very important mainly in high frequency/high

power transformers and inductors where winding current is high.�� Simulation allows the choice from very different models of transformers/ induc-

tors in shape, windings type, materials…�� It is possibile to meet customer’s specifications and to choose the best trans-

former related to the customer’s circuit.�� Optimization of the transformer/inductor means lower power losses and smaller

dimensions.�� Virtual prototyping decreases design time and project costs.
