Every single day people are discovering and enjoying new benefits of

using PEMF (Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field) therapy. As many

people already know, the human body comes naturally equipped to

repair itself. It is not the PEMF that heals the body in any way. It is the effect

that the PEMF has on your body that is non-specific, because every cell in your

body is positively affected by the magnetic resonance and is empowered to

perform its many functions with greater speed and efficiency. If provided with

the right intracellular conditions, physical materials, enzymes, and a strong

connection to Earth frequencies, almost any ailment can be easily overcome.

An introduction toPulsed Electro-Magnetic Field

Therapy

Basic facts you’ll want to know:▪ therapy is non-invasive, physical contact with the device is not

even required.

▪ therapy regenerates damaged and diseased tissue, repairs torntendons and fractured bones.

▪ therapy enhances the synthesis of protein within cells, allowing thebody to take advantage of all the protein available.

▪ therapy improves circulation, not by increasing heartbeat or bloodpressure, but by opening and dilating the arteries and capillaries. Thisalso reduces swelling.

▪ therapy increases the cellular level of oxygen absorption. Studieshave shown that oxygen partial pressure can be increased by 200%. Thisreduces pain associated with a lack of sufficient oxygen, in cells, whichoften causes lactic acid buildup under strenuous exercise.

▪ therapy is particularly effective in treating deep muscle sorenessbecause of its penetration.

▪ PEMF has beenregistered by the FDA and widely used in the treatment of human non-healing bone fractures for over three decades, and there is a growingbody of literature concerning the biological and clinical effects of thistechnology. A recent study using pulsed magnetic fields reminds us thatin clinical studies conducted over a 20 year period, millions of patientshave been safely treated with PEMF.

Long popular in Japan, magnet therapyhas more recently entered public awarenessin the United States. Golfers and tennisplayers extolling the virtues of magnets in thetreatment of sports-related injuries havepopularized this application to the point thatsports apparel and accessory companies havecaught on. Now we are quite familiar withconstant energy magnet embedded padswhich fit knees, shoulders, and ankle, as wellas insoles and mattress pads, all of which arenow widely available.

We learn from Chinese medicine, thatmagnet therapy goes as far back as 2000 yearsago in China. In 16th century Europe,Paracelsus used magnets to treat a variety ofailments while two hundred years later,Mesmer also achieved renown for treatingvarious disorders with magnets.

In the middle decades of the 20th century, scientists in various parts of the world beganperforming studies on the therapeutic use ofmagnets, especially in Japan, where from the1940s on, magnets became increasinglypopular. Yoshio Manaka, one of the influentialJapanese acupuncturists of the twentiethcentury, used magnets in conjunction withacupuncture. Magnet therapy also became acommonly used technique of self-administered medicine in Japan. During the1970s, both magnets and electro-magneticmachines were widely used among athletes inmany countries for treating sports-relatedinjuries.

In the United States, it was not until 1997that properly designed clinical trials ofmagnets began to be reported. Results of

several preliminarystudies suggested thatboth static magnetsand electro-magnetictherapy may indeedoffer therapeuticbenefits for severaldisorders. Thesefindings have helpedto intensify researchinterest in magnettherapy.

Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF)Therapy is non-static, unliketherapy with standard magnets, which are constant or static. Tocreate a PEMF, an electricalcurrent is introduced into alooped wire thereby creating amagnetic field. The electricalcurrent is then activated andthen deactivated in cyclesbetween one time per second tothousands of times per second. The cycles and frequencies are dependantupon the unique design of any particularPEMF device.

In the main stream medical fields PulsedElectro-Magnetic Field Therapy is utilized inthe two following ways:

An specially engineered version of PEMFknown as Repetitive Transcranial MagneticStimulation (rTMS).

rTMS is designed specifically to treat thebrain with low-frequency magnetic pulses. This special form of Electro-Magnetictherapy is undergoing additional studies(See page 18 ) and many of these studiessuggest that rTMS might be beneficial fordepression. It is also being studied for thetreatment of Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsivedisorder.

PEMF Therapy has been used to stimulatebone repair in non-union and other fracturessince the 1970’s. This is the specific use thathas been registered by the FDA. Althoughbone has a remarkable capacity to heal frominjury, in some cases the broken ends do notjoin: these are called "non-union" fractures.

Studies using PEMF have shown greatpromise for other conditions such as: healingsoft-tissue wounds by suppressinginflammatory responses at the cell membranelevel, alleviating pain, and increasing range ofmotion. Interestingly, vision has been shownto improve in some instances through PEMF,an area that is still undergoing study.

At this time, PEMF is being investigated forit’s effect on osteoarthritis, stress, incontinence, migraines and a host of other conditions, discussed in this booklet.

Five hundred years ago, Paracelsus, aSwiss physician and alchemist, wonderedif diseases could be treated by magnetism. He used natural lodestones as these werethe best magnets available in those days.Unfortunately, since natural lodestonesare quite weak the results wereinconsequential and no-one paid muchattention to his ideas until the discoveryof carbon steel magnets in the 1700's.

During the 1800's, early pioneers ofour modern technical world such asGauss, Weber, Faraday and Maxwell mademany of the discoveries relating electricityto magnetism, one of the more interestingtheories being that of the "Magnetic FieldDeficiency Syndrome." This idea waspicked up in our century by Dr. KyochiNakagawa of Japan who offers thisphenomenon as an explanation of bio-magnetics.

Over the last hundred years, theearth’s magnetic field has weakened onaverage by about 6 percent and in the lastthousand years it has fallen nearly 30percent. Due to this decline in strength ofour planet’s magnetic field, Dr. Nakagawasuggests that there is a human healthside-effect. He argues that a fallingmagnetic field puts us at risk sincehumans evolved in a magnetic field, thusit is necessary for proper health. andmagnetic therapy can make up the deficit.

The areas of scientific and medicalinquiry into the relationship betweenmagnetism and human health isas complex and ripe for newdiscoveries as the anatomicalfunctions and variety ofcomponents that make up thehuman being. To date, thereappears to be no commonconsensus on the mechanismsby which magnetic fields affecthuman health but there isample scientific evidence thatthe effects are powerful anddiverse.

Some of the world’s most importantand enduring scientific and medicalbreakthroughs took a long time to gainacceptance or be granted certaindevelopmental permissions. Electro-Magnetic medicine is no exception to thisrule.

For two hundred years, Electro-Magnets have been built from loops ofwire powered by electricity; Nikolai Teslabeing the first to introduce the powers ofthis technology. We all know of the “Teslaloop.” Through pulsing Electro-Magneticenergy, it is possible to produce rapidlychanging magnetic fields. This opens awhole new world of medical applicationsfor as has been discovered, by changingmagnetic fields, we can induce tinyelectrical currents in human tissue.

As far back as 1890, the AmericanElectro-Therapeutic Associationconducted annual conferences on thetherapeutic use of electricity and electricaldevices by physicians on ailing patients. All the years of persistence in this field arefinally coming to fruition as PulsingElectro-Magnetic therapy is now FDAapproved for non-healing human bonefractures . Powerful electro-magnets arealso often used in brain and muscleresearch to generate currents which canstimulate nerves to trigger sensations andflex muscles.

The interest in PEMF upon health issteadily building in medical sectors as

attested to by the variety ofresearch studies and clinicaltrials using Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy.Literally thousands of such testshave been conductedinternationally, including over2,000 University level double-blind studies using PEMF for awide array of ailments rangingfrom Arthritis to Vision.

1.

Ifyou’ve ever used an Electro-Stim or

“TENS” device, your first treatment ona high-powered pulsed electro-magnetic field (PEMF) device mayfeel very similar. An electro-stimdevice actually conducts electricalcurrent through the selected area ofthe body. This electrical current iswhat causes your muscles tocontract. However, because anelectrical current seeks the fastestroute to ground itself, this indicatesthat the electrical current may notadequately penetrate the specificarea which requires the mostamount of stimulation. A high-powered PEMF device radiates avery strong pulsed electro-magneticfield through the entire area whichthe magnetic loop is placed over. Thus, the nerves of the all muscletissue lying deep beneath themagnetic loops are stimulated,

2.

Most PEMFdevices are low powered and operateanywhere from 3-40 volts, creating avery low gauss output. A gauss is themeasurement of magnetic strength.Treatments with such devices canspan hundreds of hours. In mostcases the user does not even feel apulse due to a lack of penetrationand gauss output. A high-poweredPEMF device uses between 10,000 to15,000 volts of low current electricityand produces a high gauss output. Ahigher gauss output reducestreatment cycles to a fraction of thetime normally required with a lowpowered PEMF device. Most lowpowered devices remain an effectivetreatment method and should not be

overlooked as an alternative to morecostly, high-powered PEMF devices.

3. It is very important.

Penetration depth is supposed to bea measurement of the distance thatthe magnetic field can effectivelypenetrate. Unfortunately, thisnumber can be very misleadingbecause most companies don't knowwhat is truly "effective". Somecompanies simply make up anumber so that their product looksstronger than their competitors. Thiscan quickly lead to very exaggeratedclaims as companies try to outdoeach other. The best way to findexactly how far a given magnet willpenetrate, some basic principlesneed be kept in mind:ü Magnetic fields decrease rapidly

with distance. The further thedistance the weaker the magneticfield.

ü The earth's magnetic fieldmeasures about ½ gauss (0.50gauss). A basic law of physics andmagnetism states that a strongermagnetic field will overpower andcancel out a weaker magnetic field. What this means is that anymagnetic field that is ½ gauss (0.50gauss) or less will be canceled outby the earth's magnetic field andhave no therapeutic effect.Technically, any magnetic fieldstronger than ½ gauss will have atherapeutic effect.

4.To be effective, a

device must create a PEMF strongenough to completely penetrate theinjured area at a therapeutic level. The problem is that the strength of aPEMF dissipates rapidly withincreased distance from a PEMF loop.

Many times an injured area can beseveral inches below the skin. If aproduct is not properly designed, thePEMF will drop below therapeuticlevels before reaching the site ofinjury, rendering the PEMF deviceless effective.

5.

Every person has adifferent level of sensitivity to apulsing PEMF field. Some peopleare very sensitive on certain parts oftheir body, yet have no injury to thatspecific treated body part. Othershave had severe injuries, yet are veryreceptive to higher intensity settings. Each person’s own sensitivity andlevel of acceptable discomfort is whatis most important when receivinghigh-powered PEMF Therapy.

6. Greaterintensity (increased gauss levels)generally yields greater benefits.Deep blockages, scarring and traumaof connective tissue, ligaments, etc.,may be present in the area beingtreated. The magnetic field radiatesonly so far, as the body’s skin, muscles, sinew, fat, bone and muscletissues hinder the penetration of themagnetic field. When using a high-powered PEMF device, maximumpenetration can be achieved as theintensity setting and resulting gausslevel is increased.

7.Absolutely! If the head

or face are to be treated, a muchlower intensity should be employed.A lower intensity should be usedwhen treating fresh injuries orrecently operated areas to avoid

additional tearing or aggravation ofany already traumatized tissue.

8.

Some devices are designed todeliver pulses in a slightly irregularpattern. This prevents the body’sability to anticipate the next pulse, the resulting muscular contractionsand the body’s resistance to them. This causes the body to stop resistingthese muscular contractions andallows relaxation.

9.

High-powered PEMF therapyaccelerates vaso-dilation. In otherwords, the PEMF causes the body’svenous system to dilate, instantlyexpanding the diameter of veins andcapillaries. This action can cause oneof two physiological events (seethermographs on Pages 8-9)ü More blood can flow to the area

being treated, which is critical toaccelerating the healing process.ü Around inflamed areas, vaso-

dilation will help dissipate excessivebuild up of blood and body fluid, thus reducing swelling andinflammation.

Vaso-dilation quickly enables manyother of the body’s healingmechanisms. Additionally, thescarring and trauma to muscles, connective tissues, sinew andcartilage start to break up. Thisprovides the relief most usersexperience after one or twotreatments on an affected area.

Dr Oz & Dr Roizenon new ways to beat pain.

Physicians have long known that “the bodyelectric” is for real: tiny electrical currents andmagnetic fields are constantly firing off inside you.We just haven’t known how to harness theseforces for healing. But a handful of scientists andmedical innovators have relentlessly pursued this.

They’re succeeding, using something fewdocs know much about. It’s not a new pill oroperation; it’s magnets. Not the kind you stick on

the fridge, but pulsating electromagnets. They produce invisible energy wavesthat increase blood flow and normalise some electrical impulses to and in nerves.

One Food and Drug Administration-approved device (Yep, they’re that far),relieves more than 50% of post-operative pain. Nobody appreciates what agodsend that is like an anesthesiologist (Dr Mike) and a surgeon (Dr Oz). Well, nobody except every surgery patient who’s woken up to a world of hurt. Calledthe Torino, this PEMF post-op pain zapper is so new that even MDs who’vevaguely heard of it probably think it’s a new car.

How do devices that use a pulsed electro-magnetic field (PEMF) relievepost-op pain and intractable back, neck, foot and arthritis pain?

Your nerves, cartilage, spinal fluid, bones, muscles and blood all rely on asymphony of dancing ions. PEMFs activate these electrically charged particles inways that seem to turn off inflammation and turn on cell repair. PEMFs rev upproduction of nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the targeted area. Thecombo stimulates an anti-inflammatory cascade that, in the Torino’s case, notonly halves post-op pain, but also reduces swelling and speeds healing.

PEMF therapy also coaxes badly broken bones to mend that otherwisemight not. When you break something, electrical “injury” currents rush throughyour bone, signaling instructions for knitting it back together. But in nasty breaks, that process short-circuits. To re-create the currents, surgeons implant electrodesinto mangled bones. Not much fun, plus you look like Frankenstein.

Enter PEMF mats, bandages and knee braces, which stimulate healingcurrents. Aim PEMFs at the damaged zone for eight to 30 minutes, two to fourtimes a day, and you’ll heal better, faster.

Side effects? Zero, at least in theshort term. The products are still toonew to know whether there are long-term issues. (Full disclosure! Dr Oz hasno financial interest in any PEMFcompanies. Neither does Dr Mike, buthe’s so excited about its medicalpotential that he may invest in one.)

So why hasn’t your doc evenmentioned PEMF? Three reasons:

1. Docs are repelled by “medicalmagnet” charlatans selling bracelets, migraine goggles and shoe insertswhich are as healing as sugar cubes.

2. Few physicians know a thingabout how cells, nitric oxide andinflammation are affected by PEMF.

3. It takes so much time andmoney to prove medical devices aresafe and effective that only two PEMFgizmos have earned FDA approval sofar. Since neither is owned by a drugcompany with mega advertising bucks, your doc likely hasn’t heard a wordabout them.

What does a Low Powered PEMFtreatment feel like? “ Nothing,” says oneperson who has “tried everything” forback pain.”You don’t feel anything.Except immediately better.”

What if you or someone you lovewants to try PEMF for pain that won’tquit? Consider only devices that usepulsed electromagnetic fields.

For the 20 percent of depressedpatients who don’t respond to drugs suchas Prozac, the traditional last ditchtreatment option has been electroshocktherapy. Recently, researchers worldwidebegan investigating a promising newalternative: transcranial magneticstimulation. In TMS, magneticpulses created by ametal loop attached tothe scalp generate smallelectrical currents in thebrain. These stimulatenerve cells in areasinvolved in depression—without harmingsurrounding gray matter. The treatment gained moremomentum this spring when the Israelifirm Brainsway announced successfultrials of its newest incarnation: deepTMS."The magnetic fields of standardTMS devices extend only about half aninch into the brain’s cortex," says UziSofer, Brainsway’s CEO. "But the coils ofdeep TMS can stimulate neurons fartherinside the brain by projecting magneticfields into the skull from several pointsaround its periphery." This means that, forthe first time, clinicians can target thebrain’s deep seated limbic system, whichplays an important role in moodregulation. So far, the device has lived upto its promise: 40 percent of the 64depressed patients who received deepTMS achieved a clinically significantdegree of recovery. As Brainsway lobbies for FDAapproval of the device, Sofer is alsoevaluating deep TMS’s suitability forParkinson’s and other neurologicalconditions that affect brain areas farbelow the surface.

10.Aside from the physical relief reviewed in FAQ #8 and FAQ #9,

endorphins are released. Endorphins resemble opiates in their ability to produceanalgesia and a sense of well-being.

11. Yes,if you are pregnant, have any implanted electronic devices, such as a pacemaker,or are going into surgery within 36 hours of a PEMF treatment, you should notsubject yourself to PEMF. People receiving PEMF treatment on recent surgeriesshould avoid higher levels of pulse intensity.

12. There is littlescientific research because high-powered PEMF devices are a relatively newcategory of PEMF device. However, there are thousands of university level casestudies for the use of PEMF on hundreds of indications, from arthritis to edemato neuropathy. A search online at www.PubMed.gov for, say, “

” will yield medical abstracts indicating many case studies andtreatments using low powered devices for hundreds of hours (see page 18).

8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 6 weeks. Alternately, high-powered devicesperform the same physiological function, but in a fraction of the time because ofhigher gauss levels and deeper penetration. As more high-powered PEMFdevices are utilized in the medical community, expect more scientific researchto appear.

13. Generally, the first treatment should be limited to no longer than about 6 minutes. Afterthat, the answer is generally “no”. When treating a particular area for more thanabout 10-12 minutes, a high-powered PEMF is no longer delivering any benefits. As the body’s cells become more permeable, as a result of a PEMF treatment, toxins, which are locked away in the fat cells, are released. This is why it is veryimportant to drink plenty of water in the hours which follow a treatment. Waterhelps to flush the system of these toxins. In some cases, a person receiving anextended first-time treatment may become nauseous, dizzy, etc., due to thevolume of toxins being released into their system. Lowered blood pressure, resulting from vaso-dilation, may also cause dizziness.

14. Eachperson’s extent of pain or injury is unique. Therefore, there is no set treatmentprotocol for anyone or any one issue. Long-term chronic pain may require adozen or more treatments, spread out over an extended time period. PEMF willalmost always accelerate healing, however the rate of acceleration is generallyrelated to the severity and extent of the injury. In many cases pain relief and/orincreased range of motion is immediate, however these issues may return in 24hours, in 2 days, or in 2 weeks. Pain relief from tendonitis may occur afterone treatment, but returning to the activity which aggravated the condition inthe first place, then more than likely, the condition or pain will quickly return.

15.Treating such injuries with a

high-powered PEMF device can be very helpful for the reduction of pain, inflammation, swelling and can improve range of motion. However, a PEMFtreatment does not address underlying bio-mechanical malfunctions due tomusculoskeletal disorders. These types of injuries require the attention of anappropriate medical professional.

The effects of Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field therapy are becoming

increasingly apparent, particularly in professional high performance sports.

Because of the exertion of daily endurance training, top-athletes are far more

sensitive. Unlike the average person, however, they are aware of the smallest

changes in their bodies.

Today, many world champions and Olympic medallists from a variety of

sports rely on PEMF Therapy for medical and physiotherapeutic treatments. To

legally optimize endurance, they count predominantly on the natural effects of

PEMF therapy. However, PEMF therapy is not limited to these athletes as leisure

and amateur sports people also benefit from its positive effects. The following

observations and experiences in high performance and leisure sports have been

reported:

· Improves regeneration and relaxation after training sessions orcompetition

· Ideal application for vitalization in the morning or as a passivewarm-up prior to training or competition

· Helps prevent and treat muscle soreness· Reduces lactate levels and increases glycogen levels· Releases cramps and prophylactic bracing of muscles

(adjusting muscular imbalance, for more effective stretching)· Accelerated muscle and bone regeneration· Higher levels of oxygen, nutrient supply and higher levels of

blood circulation· Boosts endurance due to increased oxygen absorption· Strengthens immune system· Encourages melatonin production and stabilizes the sleep

rhythm (counteracts energy deficiency, jet-lag and burn-outsyndrome)

· Supports and accelerates healing of sports injuries (strains, bruises, sprains, muscle and tendon tears, dislocations, nerveinjuries)

Fascia and Repetitive Strain Syndrome

Fascia is a form of connective tissue. Its jobs are to provide a sliding andgliding environment for muscles, suspend organs in their proper places, transmit movement from muscle to thebones they are attached to, and provide asupportive and moveable wrapping fornerves and blood vessels as they passthrough and between muscles. Fascia, inits non-stretchy form, is the substancethat makes up tendons, which attachmuscle to bone, and ligaments, whichattach bone to bone.

Muscles are composed of musclefibers that are each wrapped in a thin, tight sheath of connective tissue knownas fascia. Bundles of muscle fibers arethen over wrapped with a slightly thickerlayer of fascia, then bundles of bundlesare similarly wrapped with fascia andthen the total muscle is wrapped againwith another layer of fascia. As themuscle nears its end at a bone, the sizeand number of muscle fibers significantlydecreases, narrowing the circumferenceof the muscle, but the fascia that hasbeen wrapping those muscle fiberscontinues, becoming the tendon thatattaches the muscle to bone.

The interconnected nature of fasciameans that everything in the body isconnected to everything else. When onepart of fascia is injured or compromisedin any way, it can affect tissues that are farfrom the original site of the injury orimpairment. In the case of repetitivestrain injuries, this means that tissuechanges in the shoulder which are theresult of an old injury can, over time, affect the condition and function of fasciafarther down the arm and into the hand. This often leads to the confusing, seemingly unrelated symptoms that areoften present in any case of RSI.

Symptoms may be felt in one area, butthe source of the strain may be locatedsomewhere else.

When poor posture habits causefascial changes in the neighborhoodaround a nerve, then the normally loose, suspending fascia that protects that nervebecomes tighter. The nerve, inside itscasing of tight fascia, can then becomestuck to nearby muscle, bone, bloodvessels, or even skin. Every time musclesin the area contract, the tight casing offascia around the nerve gets tugged andthe nerve becomes more and moreirritated until an injury is felt, causingtingling, numbness, zinging sensations, and sometimes burning or weakness.

In the case of repetitive straininjuries that have muscle-basedsymptoms (weakness, pain, pressure, drawing sensations, congestion, etc.), thefascia surrounding and permeatingthrough muscle becomes tight andrestricted. This can prevent the musclefrom accomplishing the work it isdesigned to do by inhibiting the fullcontraction and release of the tightmuscle. This forces neighboring musclesto pick up the slack, helping therestricted muscle do its job. The problemis, the helper muscles aren’t designed tocontract and release in exactly the samedirection as the restricted muscle, so the

15

assistance causes more strain in thehelper muscle. Thus, both musclegroups, primary and secondary, becomerestricted and strained and the process ofcreation of adhesion and more restrictioncontinues.

Fascia creates a wrapping around theentire muscle, much like a sausage casing. This part of the fascia can also becomeadhered and will cause one muscle tostick to its neighbor. When one musclecontracts, it must drag along the musclethat is stuck to it, causing strain. Fasciatightens in the area to help protect thestrained muscles, and more adhesionsdevelop as a result.

Now,cross them the other way, with the other arm on top.Notice how funny thisfeels, how you are unusedto crossing your arms inthis way and how unnaturalit feels to do so. This is because you haverepeated your favorite way of crossingyour arms thousands of times throughoutyour life and the fascia in your arms hasbeen molded according to that pattern. The same thing occurs in any area of thebody that is used in a repetitive way.

The moldability of fascia is thereason that ergonomics is so importantwhen recovering from a repetitive straininjury. If a person habitually sits in aslouched posture, then over time thefascia in a person’s body will mold itselfto that posture. Fascia in the chest willpull the ribcage down, fascia in the neckwill pull the head and neck forward, theslouched position of the upper torso willchange how the arm bones fit in theshoulder joints and the fascia in theshoulder area will change as a result. Allof these posture-related tissue changeswill be felt by the body as a source ofstrain. Now, add a repetitive motion usingmuscles in that area and you have theperfect environment for creating arepetitive strain injury.

The plantar fascia is a ligamentband running from your heel to the ballof your foot.

This bandpulls on the heelbone, raising thearch of your footas it pushes off theground. But if yourfoot movesincorrectly, theplantar fascia maybecome strained. The fascia mayswell and its tinyfibers may begin to fray, causing plantarfasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is often causedby poor foot mechanics. If your footflattens too much, the fascia mayoverstretch and swell. If your foot flattenstoo little, the fascia may ache from beingpulled too tight.

With plantar fasciitis, the bottomof your foot may hurt when you stand, especially first step in the morning. painusually occurs on the inside of the foot, near the spot where your heel and archmeet. Pain may lessen after a few steps, but it comes back after rest or withprolonged movement

A heel spur is a bony outgrowthat the base of the heel bone near theplantar fascia.

A spur maycause pain on thebottom of theheel when youstand. As withplantar fasciitis, the pain maydecrease after standing or walkinga short time. The pain you feel is notfrom the spur itself. Your heel hurtsbecause the spur pinches a nerve orpresses against the plantar bursa. With abursitis (inflamed bursa) it may applypressure to the plantar fascia.

Pioneers in the Field of PEMF

In 1895, through thegenius of Nikola Tesla, the Niagara FallsPower Companybegan sendingalternating current(AC) to Buffalo, NY,twenty-five miles away.Cities throughout theworld followed suitand made commercial

AC power available to the general public, even miles from the power generatingstation. As a result, Tesla’s high voltageloop devices, which were powered by AC,started to become widely known andapplied.

In 1898, Tesla published a paper thathe read at the eighth annual meeting ofthe American Electro-TherapeuticAssociation in Buffalo, NY. He states thatone of the early observed and remarkablefeatures of pulsed magnetism was itsapparent harmlessness, which made itpossible to pass relatively great amountsof electrical energy through the body of aperson. loops up to three feet in diameterwere used for magnetically treating thebody without contact, though ten to ahundred thousand volts were present

"between the first and last turn”. Teslaconcludes that bodily "tissues arecondensers" in the 1898 paper, which isthe basic component (dielectric) for anequivalent circuit only recently developedfor the human body. In fact, the relativepermittivity for tissue at any frequencyfrom ELF (10 Hz-100 Hz) through RF (10kHz-100 MHz) exceeds mostcommercially available dielectrics on themarket.

This unique property of the humanbody indicates an inherent adaptation andperhaps innate compatibility toward thepresence of high voltage electric fields, probably due to the high transmembranepotential already present in cellular tissue.Tesla also indicates that the after-effectfrom his loop treatment was certainlybeneficial.

Georges Lakhovsky’sphilosophy was that

"the amplitude of celloscillations must reacha certain value, inorder that theorganism be strongenough to repulse thedestructive vibrationsfrom certain microbes."He goes on to say, "The

remedy in my opinion, is not to kill themicrobes in contact with the healthy cellsbut to reinforce the oscillations of the celleither directly by reinforcing the activity ofthe blood or in producing on the cells adirect action by means of the proper rays."To prove his point, Lakhovsky’s Radio-Cellulo-Oscillator (RCO) produced lowfrequency ELF all the way throughgigahertz radiowaves with lots of

"extremely short harmonics."

His book, “The Secret of Life” was firstpublished in English in 1939. In 1949, areview of Lakhovsky’s work was publishedas “Waves That Heal” by Mark Clement.Lakhovsky’s theory is that each cell in thebody of an organism-be it a plant, ananimal, or a human being-is in itself alittle radio receiver and works on its ownspecial little frequency. Each cell, inaddition to being biological tissue, is alsoelectricity. On that theory, he held thatpathology was a not matter of biologicalconcern or intervention, but one ofelectrical concern and intervention. Therecord of his treatment of degenerativedisease, with what amounts to an early

"energy-medicine" device, was remarkableand helped further the groundwork Teslahad begun 50 years earlier.

leading French scientists demonstratedconclusive, total remissions of terminaltumors and infectious diseases inhundreds of laboratory anima - all fundedby the French Government. Completeremission of the treated diseases wasattained, and the animals’ immunesystems were all restored to normal.

Antoine Priore began working in1944-45 on the development of anelectro-magnetic device which curedcancer. He received backing and helpfrom some very interesting andcourageous individuals including theworld-famous immunologist Dr.Raymond Pautrizel of the University ofBordeaux, who did all the animal work.Dr. Pautrizel took the research in anotherdirection using the machine to treatsleeping sickness in animals, which washis specialty. Sleeping sickness was ofprimary concern to Dr. Pautrizel becauseof its prevelence in tropical countries.

When he injected rabbits with thepathogen trypansome, which causessleeping sickness, the rabbits would alldie within 72 hours. But when exposed tothe Priore device, these same rabbitswould live. Yet their blood was stillteeming with the trypanosomes whichcould be extracted from the radiatedrabbits and injected into other controlrabbits, which would then die. Thisimplies that the machine was doingsomething electro-magnetically to therabbits’ immune systems such that theywere able to fight off a lethal diseasewhich would normally kill them in 72hours!

A pioneeringmedical doctor in the1960’s, Dr. Becker ismost famous for hisbook, The Body Electric,in which he gave anautobiographical

account of his life experiences withbioelectro-magnetics.

Not only did he establish that theChinese meridians of the body are skinpathways of decreased electricalresistance, but he discovered a host ofother bioelectric effects within the bodyas well; for example the electrostimulatingof limb-regeneration in mammals. He alsoworked on electrically stimulating bonegrowth with Dr. Andrew Bassett, whoalong with Dr. Arthur Pilla, developed avery effective PEMF generator to stimulatebone fracture healing, now approved bythe FDA with an 80% success rate. SimilarPEMF signals recently have been usedeffectively to prevent osteoporosis even inpatients with an ovariectomy.

A modern-dayphysicist and inventor,Dr. Abraham Liboff isthe discoverer ofelectric-field andgeomagnetic ioncyclotron resonance. This theory reliablyexplains the resonant

interaction of static magnetic fields withendogenous AC electric fields inbiological systems.

A physicist with Oakland University,he has helped introduce significantphysics principles into the field ofbioelectromagnetics. His "Method andApparatus for the Treatment of Cancer"(US Patent #5,211,622) tunes analternating magnetic field superimposedon a static magnetic field, to maintain acombined effect that has the propercyclotron resonance frequency so that theneoplastic tissue containing a preselectedion can be treated to bring about adecrease in the proliferation rate of thecancer cells. It also can be combined witha chemotherapeutic agent for a synergisticeffect. t is noted in the patent disclosurethat "up to 100 days of treatment willprovide beneficial results”.

T H E P O W E R T O H E A LSHORT HISTORY

PEMF therapy is another method of utilizing a magnetic field, somewhat like static magnets, which have been used forcenturies. The Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Internal Medicinedescribes treating acupuncture points with lodestone, whichemits a naturally occurring magnetic field, to relieve painfulconditions. In the middle ages, magnets were very popular asthey were thought to be a cure for almost any malady. Fastforward to the 20th century, when magnetic bracelets, beds, rings, belts, blankets, etc., have been sold to treat all manner ofproblems, from athlete’s foot to insomnia. Almost everyone hasheard of using magnets therapeutically.

PEMF devices are a bit more complicated to use than justplacing a magnet on the tissue. PEMF systems are composedof loops of copper wire, through which a current of electrical energy is delivered. The current is turned onand off a number of times per second, surging through the loop. The magnetic field expands around theloop, and then collapses, expands and collapses again with the pulse of current. One of the benefits ofPEMF versus static magnets is that the fields are typically much larger, so you do not have to place thePEMF loop precisely on the area needing therapy. Given the correct amount of current and the optimumnumber of loop windings, some loops can emit a measurable magnetic field up to 18 inches from the surfaceof the loop. This makes it easy to use on equine patients, by strategically placing the loops in known problemareas like joints and major muscle groups.

In addition, PEMF patches and beds are now widely used in small animal rehabilitation centers to assistin therapy for degenerative conditions like arthritis and hip dysplasia. For horses, after short treatments overseveral days, owners and trainers can generally see and feel an improvement in the way the horse moves.

SCIENTIFIC STUDIES ON HIGH POWERED PEMFThere is little scientific research because high-powered PEMF devices are a relatively new category of

PEMF device. However, there are thousands of university level case studies for the use of PEMF onhundreds of indications, from arthritis to edema to neuropathy on humans. These devices were developedunder the theory that if a weak PEMF field has benefit, then a very large PEMF field must be much better. These systems make a characteristic noise when the field peaks, sounding like a crack or snap.

EQUINE APPLICATIONOver the last several years, we have seen the introduction of high-powered PEMF systems into race

tracks, stables and barns. These beneficial effects are harnessed to treat equine tendon and ligament injury, sore backs, sore stifles, chronic hock soreness, sore shoulders, non-union fractures, laminitis, stonebruises, and non-healing wounds. Treatments typically last 30 minutes, and are not stressful; rather theyare calming and relaxing.

When placed on a horse, the horse visibly and sensitivelyreacts to the large magnetic field charge. The operator of thesystem holds the loop over the body of the horse, and is subjectedto this large field, too. Can humans be successfully treated withthis same device? Yes, they can.

THE EFFICACY OF A HIGH POWERED PEMF DEVICETo be effective, the device must create a PEMF strong enough

to completely penetrate the injured area at a therapeutic level. Thechallenge is that the strength of a PEMF signal dissipates rapidlywith increased distance from a PEMF loop. Many times an injured

area can be several inches below the skin. If a product is not properly designed, the PEMF will dropbelow therapeutic levels before reaching the site of injury, rendering the PEMF device less effective.Greater intensity (increased gauss levels) generally yields greater benefits. Deep blockages, scarring andtrauma of connective tissue, ligaments, etc., may be present in the area being treated. The magnetic fieldradiates only so far, as the body’s skin, muscles, sinew, fat, bone and muscle tissues hinder the penetrationof the magnetic field. When using a high-powered PEMF device, maximum penetration can be achieved asthe intensity setting and resulting gauss levels are increased.

Considerations when treating animals with High Powered PEMF

Concerned about Non-Veterinary appliedComplimentary or Alternative Therapies?

Go to:www.avma.org/Advocacy/StateAndLocal/Pages/sr-cavm-exemptions.aspx

to find out your State’s Regulations and Exemptions.

Introduction Process:1. Introduce yourself to the animal - let it smell you and become

accustomed to your presence2. Introduce the Loop - turn the device to a low intensity setting and let

the animal smell the Loop.3. Avoid any and all “surprises”.4. For a new animal, maintain contact with one hand as you slowly bring

the Loop toward the animal’s torso. The primary goal is to get theanimal to relax.

5. At a fast pulse rate (low intensity) approach treatment areasslowly/carefully. Watch for signs of discomfort or alarm.

When High Powered PEMF is Working:1. Discomfort eventually subsides.2. Increase the intensity level for deeper penetration/treatment.Contra-Indications:

Avoid using the High Powered PEMF concurrently with fly spray, toxic agents or liniment. PEMF increases cell permeability/absorption,potentially causing an adverse response.

But:1. DMSO is OK because it already penetrates the cells and works well

with High Powered PEMF.2. Antibiotics are OK: PEMF aids antibiotic performance and aids

cellular mobility.3. If you are treating an area with an open wound or suture, consult a

licensed Vet.

Almost all the experimental research on the biologic effects ofelectromagnetic field therapies has been done on animals, especially on ratsand mice. Work has been done on larger animals as well, including on guineapigs, fish, dogs, cats, apes, horses, cattle, and birds. Most of this is basicbiologic or physiologic research. Little has been clinical.

While there is little direct clinical research information, it is clear that allbiology is affected by EMFs. Not all research results in animals may be appliedto humans. Results may be species-specific and depend on the effects beingmeasured. Basic cellular effects are often able to be translated to humanexperience. Many research models for specific diseases have been developedin specific animals because they are strongly related to human function. Theseinclude at a minimum, heart disease and arthritis in dogs, antioxidants inguinea pigs, cancers in mice, and so on. Therefore, not infrequently, treatments that work in humans will also work in animals. Drugs are usuallytested in animals first and if they work there, are then tested and (ifappropriate) used in humans.

Some of the first introductions of static magnets in the United States beganwith their use in horses. Later, pulsed magnetic fields were introduced as wellfor horses. At a conference put on by the North American Academy ofMagnetic Therapy several years ago, a veterinarian presented her experiencein using static magnets in horses. She was able to achieve dramatic results, often saving horses from surgery and/or being euthanized. Increasing numbersof veterinarians are using both static and pulsed magnetic fields in theirpractices. This is evidenced by an increasing supply from vendors of horseblankets, sleep pads for small pets, leg wraps, etc.

It is often the case that house pets, cats and dogs for the majority, tend togravitate towards the magnetic fields used by their human owners. It is notuncommon for us to hear from patients that their dog/cat came to sit with themwhile they were doing a treatment with a PEMF device. We do not discouragethis, and often hear from the patient that they have noticed an improvement intheir pet. It is likely that because of their smaller body mass (as compared tomost humans) that the household animal will require less time and lessintensity than the human.

One of the amazing phenomena for animals is that their metabolic ratesare so much higher than humans, and therefore they responded to PEMFsmuch more dramatically. As in humans, the challenge is when to apply themagnetic fields. Unfortunately, most people wait until it is too late.

California Equine Orthopedics - San Marcos Ca.Our practice focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletalissues in performance horses. Therapy with a Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) has revolutionized our ability tosuccessfully return athletic horses to their full potential; in manycases obviating the need for joint injections or surgery. We havefound the EquiPulse especially effective at treating acute orchronic sacroiliac injuries. We are also using PEMF Therapy forinjuries or strains to the tissues around the joints, specifically atthe insertion of the tendons, ligaments and joint capsule

(entheses). In some of our clients' training barns, the EquiPulse has been effective at helpingthe horses to “warm up” the large muscle groups prior to engaging in any athletic activity.

Diplomate American College of Veterinary Surgeons

Mandy Porter - ACP Enterprises

“ACP Enterprises has used the EquiPulse for three years now andwe couldn't be more enthusiastic about the machine and theresults it produces. As with all athletes, some days require moreeffort in training and competing and with regular use of theEquiPulse, veterinary attention and restorative time have beensignificantly reduced. We're amazed at how we've even been ableto reduce or eliminate joint injections on some of our horses. We've also had great success using the EquiPulse beforeschooling and competitions to help warm-up back muscles. Since

using the EquiPulse, we have seen quieter and more relaxed horses overall.”

Barbara Ellison - Wild Turkey Farm

“We purchased our EquiPulse and have been fans ever since. Weuse it every day on all of our high performance horses before ev-ery workout, and at the shows will often use it twice a day. Thehorses relax totally while they being treated and thoroughly enjoythe treatment. I strongly believe it has made the difference in ourGrand Prix stallion LaMarque. We would never think of going to acompetition without taking the EquiPulse with us. I believe it hasmade a difference in the soundness of our horses especially thosewho have back or shoulder problems.”

Santa Anita, Ca. - Oliver Costello with Well Armed after winningthe $500,000 Goodwood.

"The decision was made to utilize high powered PEMF because of amultitude of problems occurring with horses becoming sore in theirhindquarters. I have also seen great results with other soft tissueinjuries. Not only can the EquiPulse speed up recovery of a torn orinjured tendon or suspensory ligament, EquiPulse therapy can also beused as preventative therapy. I find that treating 2-3 times a week, ona horse, to be the most effective.”
