CONDENsATEExtraction Pumps

Alstom Power’s pumps incorporate cutting edge technology which is tailored to your plant’s individual needs.

Customer benefitsAlstom Power’s Condensate Extraction Pumps are specifically designed for the severe operating conditions of conventional and nuclear power plants.

ApplicationsAlstom Power pumps are specially designed and manufactured to optimise the steam and water loop on the turbine island using the very latest Alstom turbine generator technology.

The pumps are vertical multi-stage bowl diffuser type, arranged inside a suction barrel. The condensate water is drawn from the condenser by the extraction pumps and sent to the low pressure feed heaters.

In the nuclear power plants, three pumps are generally installed - two running and one in stand by. Variable speed drives are possible and the pump is made to operate safely and economically at full speed under partial load conditions.

The pumps many benefits include:

PumPs OFFERINGCONDENSATE

Case studyProject name Taishan, China (2 x 1,755MW)

Customer CGNPC

Fuel Nuclear

Alstom scope Two ARABELLETM steam turbines, turbine generator package (including the Condensate Extraction Pumps), engineering and procurement.

Date of Commercial operation 2013

Condensate Extraction Pumps expertise• The discharge column and pump

head are made of strongly reinforced fabricated steel sheets, to ensure long life, despite difficult running conditions in nuclear power plants

• The pump is fitted with a balancing drum, partly compensating the axial thrust. A strong tilting pad type thrust bearing carries the remaining efforts

• Shaft bearings are journal type, lubricated by the pumped water. Impellers are equipped with renewable casing wear rings

• The electrical motor is located on a separate civil structure, avoiding interactions with the pumps and minimising vibrations

• The motor is equipped with its own thrust-bearing device The excellent hydraulic features include:

• The double suction is located at the very bottom of the pump in order to operate under the best possible NPSH conditions

• The suction impeller has been specially designed and laboratory tested to ensure the lowest required NPSH at all running points, which are always very severe

• The pressure stages are located as close as possible from the pump discharge head

Project highlightsIn recent years, Alstom Power has installed Condensate Extraction Pumps at the major nuclear power plants in France and has been awarded with the Flamanville 3 (France) and Taishan (China) projects. At Taishan, Alstom’s turbine island engineering and procurement (E&P) contract covers the turbine hall, the equipment inside and the pumping station. Alstom is supplying key equipment such as feedwater heaters, deaerator, circulating water pumps and Condensate Extraction Pumps in the turbine hall and the pumping station. The plant includes two units, each with a 1,755MW Alstom ARABELLE™ steam turbine.
