From the Principal We are full steam ahead into Term 4 with new units of work being started. The junior class are studying poetry in

English and time and measurement in Maths. In history we are looking at historic sites in our local area and will be going for a walk around the main street on Monday 27th in the afternoon to view the cenotaph and old smelters. Full

school uniform, hat, shoes and water bottle will be required. If you do not want your child to be involved please contact the office otherwise all children in my class will be included. We are investigating materials and their properties

in science and are discovering how to mix, make and use various substances. The senior class are working hard on their “Grow and Cook” newsletter and we welcome Mr Simpson back to work on

editing skills. Maths rotations have started this week with Mr Harrison on a Thursday and Friday and in history they are studying immigration. In Science Antarctic food webs are being investigated and the impacts of overfishing on this

food web. Mrs Simpson will be back next week on Mondays and Fridays to focus on literacy. We are very appreciate of the extra

help Mr Harrison and Mrs Simpson provide to our students in the areas of literacy and numeracy. The Teaching and Learning and Discipline Audit went extremely well. We were very happy with the outcome and

appreciated the learning process involved. A copy of the audit is available to view at the school and will be placed on the school website before the end of the year.

Remember attendance is important!! 95 TO STRIVE!!

From the Kitchen

Our final Japanese cooking session on Friday was amazing. Attached are some photos of the day. Thank you to Peter Brown, Mizuka and Miss Julie - Cooktown’s Chappy for joining us.

The seniors began their research into bread on Tuesday. In groups they are focusing on German Pretzels, Greek Flat-bread and Italian Ciabatta. The junior students will also be

learning about different types of breads and also bread baking techniques.

P and C meeting Monday 27th October 5pm. All welcome.

From the Garden

Spring, of the tropical kind, has seen a growth spurt in some plants such as asparagus, daylilies and abika, and seeds are sprouting everywhere. Its time to rejuvenate garden beds and this is what P-4's did on Tuesday. Seed was packaged, worms tended and pumice crushed (explain why next week!), thankyou Margaret and Maria for volunteering. The previous Friday was an opportune time to invite our garden volunteers for morning tea and thank them for their commitment to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Not that we sat around – this energetic bunch pulled down the original garden fence and cleaned up the old pumpkin patch – come and see the result. Thankyou Peter, Margaret and Christiane for your help.

Now is the time to pile on manure too, if you have a bucket or two to spare, it will give new plants a great start.

From the Classrooms

The Prep and Year 1 children have been Scientists, finding and identifying different

leaves. Using magnifying glasses they have discovered veins in the leaves that

feed the leaves and keep them alive. They practised writing the leaf names and

their science workbooks are on display in the science area of the classroom.
