The young audience’s excite- ment was clear to see, as they sat quietly waiting for the presenta- tion to begin at Al-Noor Primary School in Green Lane, Good- mayes. The show, in aid of Islam Awareness Week, began with a song by the school choir which perfectly summed up what the event was hoping to achieve; to promote a sense of community and religious understanding. Working hard Pupils at the school have been working hard to put together an exhibition and related activities focusing on various aspects of local life including health, sport, the environment, arts and crafts and clothing. The exhibition was launched on Monday last week with a reception for local dignitaries, who were invited to visit the unique event. More than 300 primary school pupils followed and took part in the activities on offer which were run by the pupils. Visitors had the opportunity to examine exhibits and displays, explore the themes covered, take part in a quiz, tour the school and have their questions an- swered by pupils and staff. Year 5 student, Sara Jugon said: “I have been helping people try on traditional Muslim dress, which has been my favourite part of the exhibition but it was also nice seeing my art work on the wall. “Pupils that visited really enjoyed playing in the sports section of the exhibition which was the most popular because of the mini-archery games. “I really hope we can do another exhibition soon.” The 19th Islam Awareness Week, marked with events across the country, hopes to raise aware- ness and remove misconceptions surrounding Britain’s second largest faith group. Headteacher, Someera Butt, said: “Al-Noor Primary aims to teach pupils to make positive contributions towards society and join hands with all others working for the common good. Our pupils’ exhibition is an exciting addition to our work to fulfil that. “We wanted to bring the com- munity together by focusing on our pupils. We recognise that we are a faith school and it can be isolating so we wanted to engage our students with other faiths and teach them about ours.” Pupils’ big day promotes religious understanding School event aims to raise Islamic awareness Chadwell Heath pupils take up archery with pupils from Al-Noor school Sumayyah Imrit, nine, with an environmental display as part of the art exhbition Mohammed Aslam and Ayob Salahudin Elnaas, both 10, try their hand at an Olympic themed game Five Pillars of Islam The Five Pillars are the five obligations that every Muslim must satisfy in order to live a good and responsible life according to Islam.
