A personal note from Steven Howard, Co-Chairman, Put Yourself In My Shoes

It’s a bit like having a baby… you look for a willing partner, find out how much you

have in common, engage in the initial bout of activity, enjoy the thought of it all

happening, and then wait ages for it all to come to fruition. Along the way, there are

numerous ups and downs. Having someone to share all these with is essential.

I met my ‘partner and co-chairman’, Gavin Boyle, when he attended one of my previous events,

‘Lots Of Ink!’. He contacted me the following morning and, a year later, invited me to SHINE’s

first major benefit evening. Following this tremendously successful event, we both felt that if

we combined our contacts and resources, we would be able to host a truly special evening. Put

Yourself In My Shoes was born and Gavin has been a superb partner – living proof that two heads

really are better than one.

I am not a Committee person. Maybe this is because I have some friends who I know will always

support what I am doing. I pester and they respond. If there was a Committee, they would be on it.

So I am, yet again, indebted to Richard Rosenberg, Ronnie Harris, Leon Angel, Malcolm Green and

Colin Lester. All have done more than their fair share to support Norwood in the past. I hope they

will continue to do so in the future. I know that, without their input, my task would be

almost impossible.

This was always an ambitious task. In the past, I had relied on celebrities to donate something of

little value to them but of great value to us. Put Yourself In My Shoes was always going to be a bit

riskier. Now we were asking celebrities to donate their time rather than just an item. Given all their

professional commitments, not to mention their personal lives and even their promises to other

charitable causes, this was always going to be tricky. However, they stepped up to the plate in

magnificent style and I am indebted to each and every one of them.

To access these celebrities, you have to have the support of their ‘gatekeepers’. Being a

‘gatekeeper’ myself, I know it is always much easier to say ‘no’ than ‘yes’ to yet another

commitment, which always brings additional work and the inevitable aggravation. So I am indebted

to them all, particularly Donna and Mark Woodward, Angus Forbes, Charlotte Toosey, Sonny Takhar,

David Glick, Claire Singers, Simon Greenberg, and Stuart Jacobs.

Other supporters who stepped up were Harry Rogers, Anne Jenkin, Stuart Traill, Natalie Wakefield,

Nicola Quale and Lisa Grainger. I am grateful to them for their offers of unconditional help.

At the risk of this being longer than a leading lady’s Oscar acceptance speech, my final thanks go

to two groups of people. They couldn’t be more different, yet they both have something in common

– the well-being of the children and young adults who benefit from the support of both charities.

There is everyone who has made a financial contribution to this evening’s event. I am well aware of

the numerous demands on your time and pocket. We have tried to come up with an enticing event,

but without your generous support, we wouldn’t be able to raise the funds for these two fantastic

charities – which is, after all, the point of the whole evening. For this support, we are full

of gratitude.

The second group of people are all the carers, social workers and the many unpaid volunteers.

They all make a huge difference to all the people’s lives that they come into contact with. Always

in the background, and never getting enough credit or glory, they are the true heroes. They are the

ones who inspire us all.

Thank you for your support.

A note from Gavin Boyle, Co-Chairman, Put Yourself In My Shoes

I have always felt Put Yourself In My Shoes to be a particularly apt title for a fundraising event,

and not just because of the nature of this auction. Any charitable organisation ultimately depends

on supporters who have the willingness and the imagination to put themselves in the shoes of some

of society’s most vulnerable individuals and then use this new perspective to take what steps they

can to improve lives, offer hope and make a difference.

Few people in our society are more vulnerable than the disabled and disadvantaged children whose

lives SHINE and Norwood seek to enhance. At SHINE, we work to achieve this through education

– the best way of breaking cycles of exclusion, poverty and neglect that can span generations.

All of us know from our own experience how education can create confidence, expand horizons

and fuel ambitions, so we want to give every child the chance to identify their own sparks of

potential and use their time at school to develop these more fully.

Potential comes in many forms and so our programmes work with children who differ greatly in their

academic ability. What they share, however, is the need for a little more time, attention and support.

To provide this, we have always relied heavily on our partnerships with parents, teachers and

schools. Their dedication and skill consistently demonstrate how only a few extra hours a week

can make an enormous difference to a child’s self-confidence and academic achievement.

Because we also recognise how much these partnerships help us raise our own game, we take

the same approach to our other activities. This is particularly the case tonight. All of us at SHINE

consider ourselves very lucky to have worked with Steven Howard on this project. His remarkable

energy, enthusiasm and commitment have been instrumental to the success of this event and we

are extremely grateful.

Many thanks are also due to Will Cawley, who brought creativity, coherence and visual elegance

to this project from the very start, and his wife Jennifer, who donated her considerable talent to

take some superb photographs, usually at very short notice. And once more, we owe a great debt

to Christie’s International UK Ltd for their continued support, not least in the form of their Chairman,

Dermot Chichester, who once again brings his unique blend of flair and professionalism to

tonight’s auction.

Our greatest thanks, however, go to everyone here tonight. Your loyalty and generosity has

already helped thousands of children greatly improve their learning, their education and their lives.

With your continued support, we can offer these opportunities to many more children – in some

sense, giving them the chance to choose their own shoes, their own path and maybe even their

own destination.

It’s a simple fact that many members of our community are vulnerable or disadvantaged, or have

learning disabilities. Norwood is one of the UK’s leading children and family services charities,

supporting thousands of children, families and adults with learning disabilities or coping with

social disadvantage. It believes that every individual has the right to determine and achieve their

goals in life.

Approximately 1,000 children in the UK are waiting for adoption by secure, stable and loving

families. Every year, Norwood places over 70 children who would otherwise be in public care with

such families. Its expertise in this field is such that, in 2001, the Government appointed Norwood

to operate the official Adoption Register for England and Wales for a three-year period.

Joshua* has multiple disabilities that require full-time care, but his mother is suffering with

severe mental illness. He is just one of thousands of children in urgent need of loving families.

Joshua requires a foster family that can give him the time and care that he needs while his

mother tries to cope with her illness.

Norwood is a specialist in the field. Before placing children like Joshua into stable, loving

homes, it carefully trains the new foster families so that they can give these children the love

and care that they deserve for as long as they are unable to live at home.

Norwood also operates a number of children and family centres across London. They offer

counselling services, used by approximately 20,000 people each year, and are equipped with toy

libraries, safe play areas, family assessment rooms, therapy rooms and adventure playground

Ravenswood Village

Set in over 120 acres of Berkshire countryside, Ravenswood Village is home to 175 children and

adults with learning disabilities. While residents’ levels of ability vary greatly, all are encouraged

to live life to the full. The village houses an indoor hydrotherapy pool, a coffee shop, dance and

art studios, riding school and a working garden, all of which are developed to meet the needs

of residents.

All residents are offered work-related training programmes in the local community, while local

colleges provide further education opportunities. Each student is given an individual learning

programme and offered the most convenient method to study, either at home, via the onsite

educational facilities or at a college.

Stephen* has autistic spectrum disorder. When he arrived at Ravenswood Village he had

complicated daily routines: he refused to eat any yellow or green food, would only walk in

one direction and screamed whenever his bus turned left. He could not talk, but instead

used noises and behaviour to communicate.

Norwood provided Stephen with a structured day that included some of his routines.

Eventually he relaxed enough for his carers to challenge some of his more dangerous

behaviour. Today Stephen is a different person: he has been on holiday for the first time

and enjoys shopping. He can even turn left.

Norwood’s new Autistic Service will make a huge difference to people like Stephen,

enabling them to support more autistic people with the specialist service they need.

Tackling special educational needs

Almost two million children in Britain have some form of special educational need. Binoh is

a Special Education Outreach Service that supports over 1,000 children a year with special

educational needs, working to enable them to enhance their learning and improve their

self-esteem, while remaining in mainstream education wherever possible.

The Binoh Team assesses each child individually, consulting with parents, family members, carers

and the child’s existing schoolteachers. A planned programme of support is then developed which

can involve educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists,

art therapists and a team of mobile teachers or Learning Support assistants.

Working with disabilities

Across the UK, 40,000 children of school age have severe, profound and multiple learning

difficulties; a further 172,000 have moderate learning difficulties. Norwood runs special education

services for secondary school pupils that cater for these needs. The Annie Lawson School has

25 pupils, each with complex needs that require a detailed, wide-ranging educational plan.

This covers therapeutic treatments such as physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, music

therapy, and a multi sensory treatment. The singular belief at the school is that all children should

have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the severity of their learning disability.

Another facility is the Buckets & Spades Lodge, which offers short term respite care for children

with moderate or severe learning disabilities. The lodge provides them with the chance for an

enjoyable and stimulating break from their family while also giving family members and regular

carers a much-needed break, safe in the knowledge that their child is receiving professional,

round-the-clock attention.

SHINE funds and develops educational programmes for disadvantaged children, to help them

make the most from their time at school. To that end, it funds projects like specialist after school

clubs, SHINE Academies on Saturdays and intensive literacy and numeracy support sessions.

Some projects respond to the challenge of children with special educational needs, who require

specific help to bring them up to their peer level. Others help underachieving children, where a

little more attention will enable them to do much better. And some projects stretch gifted children

who want to see just how good they can really be.

LIFT (Learning for Life with Technology) runs small, after-school workshops to help failing

children to acquire essential ICT and literacy skills, and raise their achievement levels and

confidence at school.

One beneficiary is Nicola*, who had low confidence, poor behaviour and real problems with

reading and computers. In the beginning, Nicola needed constant contact with a specific

support worker and would not let anyone else near her work. By the end of her second term,

however, she was working independently and was contributing in front of the whole group.

The school has also seen a marked improvement in class.

A partnership approach

SHINE works with teachers who want more for their pupils, parents who want the best for their

children, and the children themselves, who want to discover exactly what they can do. With the

right partners, SHINE’s money, management and imagination can leverage existing resources

– such as filling empty classrooms and harnessing new technology – to create projects that

punch far above their weight and often get results that exceed everyone’s expectations.

For example, Serious Fun on Saturdays brings together the state and private sectors, opening

up the first class facilities of some of London’s top independent schools to disadvantaged local

children, extending and enriching their core curriculum in a way that is both focused and fun.

The Education Programme for Gifted Youth (EPGY) offers gifted students in deprived areas the

benefit of individualised, multimedia, distance-learning courses from Stanford University in

California. SHINE Academies provide underachieving children with an extra 20% of tuition every

week, carefully planned to accelerate and complement the core curriculum, while Springboard

gives intensive, one-on-one literacy tuition in twice-weekly sessions for children who are seriously

falling behind at school.

Millfields SHINE Academy on Saturdays uses classrooms that are empty for 195 days every

year to give underachieving children extra tuition that complements the national curriculum.

Before starting at Millfields, Ryan* had been excluded from several other schools because

of his poor behaviour: he often misses school to look after his sick mother, finds it difficult to

concentrate in class and can be aggressive. However, in small groups and in the right situation,

Ryan’s imagination and love of technology becomes

readily apparent.

Since it started, Millfields SHINE Academy has been helping children like Ryan improve their

performance at school: SHINE students outperform Millfields school pupils in maths, science

and English and have now exceeded their SATs targets for the third year running.

Making a difference

These are just some of SHINE’s programmes. Since its inception, however, SHINE has insisted that

all its projects deliver defined, measurable outcomes. This ensures that they are efficient, effective

and wholly positive to the children they help. It also means that SHINE can identify what works,

how and why. For example, 96% of SHINE-funded children who attend Springboard regularly

have improved their reading and/or spelling age by an average of 12 months, progressing much

faster than their teachers predicted. Children attending SHINE Academies regularly outperform

their classmates and, after just one year, 75% of EPGY students had significantly increased their

performance in maths, with many of them covering material far beyond the GCSE syllabus

(even, in some cases, reaching university level!)

Replicating proven success

Demonstrating the success of these and other programmes is important because SHINE

believes the fastest, smartest and most efficient way to help more children is to take proven

success and replicate it elsewhere. SHINE has helped Springboard expand its work from

Southwark into Lambeth, Lewisham, Islington and Manchester; Serious Fun on Saturdays has

expanded from one school two years ago to 29 schools today; EPGY has increased sevenfold in

one year; and we are in the initial stages of planning three more SHINE Academies, bringing the

total number up to eight in just five years.

What this means is that SHINE is now helping over 7,500 children in over 260 schools in London

and Manchester. While we are pleased with this progress, we remain mindful that much remains to

be done. No child deserves to be left behind. Each one has something to offer. Ultimately, we want

every child to be able to get the help that they need in order to recognise and then realise their

full potential.

*All names have been changed to protect the privacy of the children involved.

This is your chance for a truly champion day out,

walking a round with one of the all-time golfing

greats. Colin Montgomerie is one of the most

successful golfers Britain has ever produced.

He has won at least one tournament every

year since 1992 and has consistently ranked

a record-equalling five victories in Europe and

has been awarded seven successive European

Order of Merits (an achievement that many think

is unlikely to ever be equalled). And then, of

REM

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a bit of a David

Bailey, now’s your chance. This July, you’ll be

photographing one of the biggest bands on

earth, live in concert. With albums like Green

and Automatic for the People, REM have

claimed their place as Georgia’s biggest export,

selling tens of millions of records worldwide.

Now you can get up close and very personal at

their sell-out summer concert in London’s Hyde

Park on Saturday 9th July.

Before the event begins, you’ll use the roadies’

special entrance to go backstage, watch the

whole production get underway and enjoy the

pre-event party. When the concert kicks off,

you’ll be taken to the press photographers’

exclusive pitch in front of the entire crowd

– absolutely the best spot to click away with

Fleet Street’s finest during the first few songs.

When you’re out of time, you and a friend will

have a prime position near the front of the

audience to watch the rest of the concert and

dance away with 85,000 other shiny happy

people. Guaranteed a night to remember, even

if it’s the end of the world as you know it,

you’ll feel fine.

ARSENAL

FOOTBALL

This is a great opportunity for the football-

crazy child in your home – plus one of the

kids – to step into Arsene Wenger’s shoes.

After numerous trophies and triumphs – not

to mention that record tally of 49 consecutive

games without a single defeat – Arsenal under

Wenger is widely recognised as one of the

greatest teams in modern football. Here’s your

chance to watch the BBC’s Coach of the Year

2004 put his all-star squad through their paces.

You’ll spend the morning as Arsene’s guests at

their practice grounds at London Colney for a

training session with soccer legends like Thierry

Henry, Ashley Cole, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick

Vieira and Freddie Ljungberg. After the training

session, you’ll join the players for lunch and the

chance to see this awesome team off-duty – just

think of the stories you’ll both be able to tell in

the office (or the playground).

And having met the boys, you and three others

will have tickets to a match, again as the guests

of Arsene Wenger, to watch the team in action,

at home, putting all that training into practice.

If yours is a Gunner household, dare you pass

this up?

STATUS QUO

Status Quo have been rocking all over the world

for almost 40 years. They’ve sold well over 100

million records and – famously – opened Live

Aid almost exactly 20 years ago. The group

has had more hit albums in Britain than any

band except the Rolling Stones and has spent

416 weeks – eight years – in the singles charts.

They’ve performed across the world – in Europe,

Australia, Moscow, Seoul and even on the flight

deck of HMS Ark Royal.

And this is your amazing chance to be a

wanderer alongside Rick Parfitt, Francis Rossi

and the rest of the band. On August 26th, Status

Quo will be live in concert at the Sporting Club

in Monte Carlo. What we’re proposing is that

you and a friend will act as their guitar roadies

for what will certainly be a spectacular concert.

With flights and accommodation taken care of,

you’ll get to meet the guys backstage before the

gig. And as they play their greatest hits, you can

watch it from the wings, doing as much or as

little roadie work as you like – whatever

you want.

THE WORLDRetrace the steps of Christopher Columbus (this time, in utter luxury)Lot 12

Put yourself in Christopher Columbus’ shoes

and this December retrace his steps around the

Caribbean – the difference being that he did it

in the teeny, tiny Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria,

whereas you’ll be doing it in a style that he

could never have dreamt of – a trip for two from

December 12th-19th 2005 on The World,

a superliner that’s simply the last word

in floating luxury.

Instead of Captain Columbus’ cramped cabin

arrangements, you’ll be in a spacious two-

bedroom suite (with living room, kitchen and

balcony) – very much a home from home.

And while you’re on board, you can indulge

yourself at the Clinique La Prairie spa, play some

golf on the 53 course simulator (there’s also

a professional on board to help you with your

swing) and enjoy haute cuisine, Asian

or Mediterranean food in the ship’s

superb restaurants.

And then there are the locations – Key West,

the Dominican Republic, the Cayman Islands

and the British Virgin Islands, to name but a few.

What’s more, to top it all off, you’ll be invited to

a private dinner with the Captain in his quarters,

catered by one of the ship’s gourmet chefs –

a chance to get behind the scenes and

(like Columbus) discover exactly what

The World has to offer.

JAMES

CRACKNELL

Step into some golden shoes by spending

a day with double Olympic Gold Medal rower,

James Cracknell. You’ll go to the Leander club

at Henley on Thames and kick off with a training

session with the man who is one of Britain’s

most successful (and fittest) athletes.

Once you’re finished and all cleaned up, it’s

off to lunch (these rowers need their food).

Here you’ll be able to get the inside story on life

as a world class athlete and what it was really

like to row those two fantastic Olympic finals

– the tense race in Sydney, chased to the line

by the Italians, then the historic, nail biting 0.08

second victory over the Canadians in Athens:

the race that gave James his second Olympic

Gold. If you ever wanted to know what it’s like to

be at the pinnacle of your profession and what is

required to stay there, this is your chance.

(A proportion of the amount raised from the sale

of this item will be donated to Access Sport,

which provides equipment and coaching to

encourage more young people to take

up sports).

CRAIG

DAVIDRecord a duet with one of Britain’s biggest superstars, Craig DavidLot 14

This is a unique chance to step into Sting’s

shoes and record a duet with Craig David.

Still only 23 years old, Craig David has had a

meteoric rise to fame. He was the youngest ever

British male to top the charts with Fill Me In and

has since had another seven top ten hits. Born

To Do It and Slicker Than Your Average have

sold millions around the world. He has been

nominated for a house full of awards,

has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and

has even been the subject of a South Bank

Show documentary.

So that’s your singing partner… The two of

you will record Rise and Fall, a duet that Craig

David originally sang with Sting, which reached

number two in the charts in May 2003 and was

one of the most played records of the year.

While these are pretty big shoes to fill – and

hitting those high notes may be tricky – this is

a fantastic chance to sing with one of music’s

greatest modern song-writers and come away

with a lasting record of the day. Can you rise

to the occasion?

X FACTOR

This is your chance to meet some of the

sharpest tongues and shortest tempers on TV

today, as well as hear some of the best home-

grown singing talent Britain has to offer.

This October, you and a friend will be in London,

looking for the X Factor with Louis Walsh,

Sharon Osbourne and, of course, Simon Cowell.

On the day before one of the live shows, you’ll

go behind the scenes of the closed set and get

to meet all the contestants – one of whom will

ultimately become a showbiz star.

And, of course, you’ll meet the judges and have

the chance to find out exactly what they think

of this year’s line-up (and each other). Because

let’s face it, with this panel, you can be sure

they won’t hold back.

The next day, you’ll be able to meet the judges

again, as well as the X Factor’s presenter, Kate

Thornton, and sit in on the dress rehearsal.

Then take your seats for the live show: which of

these wannabes will see their hopes and dreams

dashed in public and which ones can breathe a

sigh of relief (for another week, at least)? This

will be a fight to the finish because, as we all

know, wherever there’s buried treasure, X marks

the spot.

Il DIVO

Tall, dark, handsome and the perfect present for

the most important woman in every life – your

mother. Il Divo is one of Britain’s hottest new

groups: taking popular favourites, old and new,

their classically trained voices bridge the gap

between pop music and opera with a unique

contemporary style. This – along with their

heartthrob good looks – has earned them a

place in the hearts of women of all ages: their

first album went straight in at number one and

ended up as one of the highest selling albums

of 2004.

If your mother hasn’t heard of them yet, she’ll

love you when she does. But she’ll absolutely

adore you when she gets to meet the four boys

– David, Sebastien, Urs and Carlos – after a

rehearsal session in London, when they’ll make

her day by serenading her with one of their

classic songs, Mama.

On top of all this, you’ll get two VIP tickets

– plus passes for the after-show party – to hear

the boys in their main London concert this

September at the Royal Albert Hall: with such

great songs on this huge stage, it’s the perfect

present for the unsung hero in your life.

FOOTBALL

This is your chance to put Junior into the

football boots of real sporting heroes and make

a dream come true. You and your soccer-crazy

kid will watch the England football squad train

in the week of the England-Austria match at

Old Trafford. There they’ll get to see England

coach Sven-Göran Eriksson put stars like David

Beckham, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and

Rio Ferdinand through their paces.

Of course, your child will get to know the team

even better on Saturday 8th October, when

they’ll be an England mascot for the game itself.

Wearing their own full England kit, he or she will

run out through the tunnel and onto the pitch

with the team and stand next to them while the

captured for posterity. When the match begins,

they can join you in your seats, to watch the

DARCEY

BUSSELLGo behind the scenes at the Royal Ballet with Darcey Bussell Lot 18

This is the perfect present for the little leading

lady in your home: a rare opportunity to go

behind the scenes at the Royal Ballet with three

of her best friends. They’ll start off by watching

the dancers go through their paces during

morning class, before watching one of ballet’s

biggest names in rehearsal. Darcey Bussell OBE

is one of the world’s top dancers – appointed a

principal at the Royal Ballet when only 20 years

old, her classical performances have included

Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty,

The Nutcracker and Giselle, and her picture

hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.

Later on, they’ll have superb seats at the Royal

Opera House for one of the classics: whether

it’s Swan Lake or Sleeping Beauty, they’ll have

an excellent view to see Darcey and the rest of

the company create pure stage magic. After the

show, they can go backstage and visit Darcey

in her dressing room and, when it’s all over, your

spend the day being treated like the kings (or

tsars) of one of Premier League football’s most

successful clubs.

Of course, when you arrive you won’t be using

your friends at your own table. And then, of

course, there’s the main event – the match

Conditions Of Business For Norwood/SHINE “Put Yourself In My Shoes” Auction, To Be Held On 9 June 2005 at Madame Tussauds, London

The items offered in this sale and listed in this catalogue will be sold by Norwood/SHINE, registered

with the Charity Commissioners under numbers 1059050 (“Norwood”) and 1082777 (“SHINE: Support

and Help In Education”). Any questions in relation to the auction should be directed to Norwood/SHINE

and not to Christie’s, which serves merely as auctioneer for Norwood/SHINE in conducting the sale.

The sale of the lots will result in contracts made between Norwood/SHINE and the buyers. The auction

is subject to the following terms and conditions which govern the sale of all the items offered

(as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the auction):

1. (a) Neither Christie’s nor Norwood/SHINE assumes any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity or the

author-ship of any items identified in this catalogue. (b) All items are sold with all faults and imperfections and

errors of description and neither Christie’s nor Norwood/SHINE makes any representations or warranties of any

kind or nature, expressed or implied, with respect to the items and in no event shall any of them be responsible

for the correctness of any descriptions of items, nor be deemed to have made any representations or warranties

of physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness, attribution, authenticity or provenance of

the items. No statement in the auction catalogue or other description made at the sale, in any sale invoice or

elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty. (c) Items may be offered subject to reserves.

2. Any items may be withdrawn by Christie’s or Norwood/SHINE at any time before the actual sale.

3. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in

the catalogue.

4. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding in his absolute discretion. The highest

bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the

auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell

the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the sale records of Norwood/SHINE shall be conclusive in

all respects.

5. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not a reasonable reflection of the value of the item, he may

reject the same and withdraw the item from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that

any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance.

6. The highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth

herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof, (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase

thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price or such part as Norwood/SHINE may require. Norwood/SHINE

will not release a lot to a successful buyer until payment of the total amount due has been made. After payment,

the purchaser shall remove any item from Norwood/SHINE premises. If the item is not so removed, it may be

sent by Norwood/SHINE at its discretion to storage for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such

charges will then be added to the purchase price of the item.

If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies

available to Norwood/SHINE by law including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid

price, Norwood/SHINE at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments

made by the purchaser or (b) resell the item on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk

of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any

shortfall between the original sale price and the price achieved upon resale, all other charges due hereunder

and any incidental damages.

7. Payments for purchases must be made in Sterling and by cheque or bank wire transfer. Norwood/SHINE is

unable to accept payments by credit card at this time. Cheques should be made payable to Put Yourself In My

Shoes. For bank transfer details please contact Rochelle Tessler on 020 8420 6898.

8. In the case of commission bids or bids transmitted by telephone, Christie’s and Norwood/SHINE are not

responsible for errors or omissions in connection with such bidding.

9. In no circumstances will Christie’s or Norwood/SHINE rescind any purchase made or refund the amount paid

in respect of any lot.

10. Neither shipping nor delivery costs are included in the price at which a lot is knocked down by the auctioneer

to the buyer.

11. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the purchaser’s, Norwood/SHINE’s and Christie’s respective rights and

obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of England

and Wales. By bidding at the auction, whether present in person or by agent, commission bid, telephone or

other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of Courts

of England and Wales.

How you can help

Thank you for coming tonight and showing your support for our work. If you would like any more

information about SHINE and the projects it funds and develops, please call Stephen Shields at

SHINE on 020 8393 1880.

If you would like more information about Norwood and its work, please contact Ronit Shebson

at Norwood on 020 8965 4555.

Tax-efficient giving

For SHINE and Norwood, every penny counts. Therefore it makes sense to tell you about the most

tax-efficient ways to support these organisations and so make your gift go even further.

Payment by cheque with an accompanying Gift Aid declaration means that SHINE and/or Norwood can

reclaim an additional 28 per cent on the amount you have donated – for example, if you donate £1,000

to SHINE and/or Norwood, the organisation(s) will get £1,280.

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) cheques work in a similar manner, with the tax reclaimed automatically

on your behalf by CAF. In each instance, higher rate taxpayers must declare the gift on their tax return to

receive the full balance.

Full details and Gift Aid forms are available online at www.norwood.org.uk and www.shinetrust.org.uk.

We regret that CAF cheques cannot be used to pay for auction items.

‘Payroll giving’ is the easiest way to give regularly. Decide how much you wish to give and then tell your

employer the name of the charity (SHINE or Norwood), registered charity number (1082777 or 1059050)

and the size of your monthly donation. This is deducted from your gross monthly salary, so a monthly

donation of £100 will save a basic rate taxpayer £22 in tax per month, lowering the cost to £78.

Higher rate taxpayers save even more.

Donating shares is easily the most tax-efficient way to give. If you’ve already used up your annual

£7,700 Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowance, transferring shares to SHINE and/or Norwood allows you

to save the tax on your capital gain and up to 40% in income tax on the value of the donation.

This means that you could save up to 76% on the value of your donation and £10,000 of shares given

to SHINE and/or Norwood could cost you as little as £2,400. Full details and examples are available

at SHINE’s website.

If you are a US citizen, you can make tax-efficient donations to SHINE and/or Norwood in the

following manner:

To SHINE: by donating to ‘US Friends of Shine’, a US501c3 company which shares SHINE’s

charitable objectives.

To Norwood: by donating to CAF America and suggesting that the donation be used to support

Norwood and its work. CAF America forms are available upon request.

Corporate partnerships

SHINE is working with a number of organisations to fund some projects jointly. If you think that your

company might like to support SHINE’s work, please email [email protected]

or call 020 8393 1880.

Norwood also works in partnership with other organisations to deliver its services. If you think that

your company would be interested in finding out more, please email Judith Katzler, Director of Business

Development at [email protected] or call her on 020 8420 6821.
