Year 7,

We made GLOBAL news!

Here’s an extract from the article posted by Lend Lease, who are the company in charge of the renovation of our school building, on their international website.

“ARK Putney Academy took part in this year’s Health & Safety week by holding their own poster competition.Health & Safety week, which took place in January this year, invited our employee’s children to take part in poster drawing competition under the theme ‘Keeping Incident & Injury Free.’ Our Senior Project Manager John Fifield took this one step further by engaging with the Academy who ran the competition for the year seven pupils. More than 30 year seven students participated, submitting posters inspired by our adjacent construction activities. The winning students were announced at the school year seven assembly, where John presented them with certificates, a voucher and invited them on a site visit with their head of year teacher”John told Pulse: “The calibre of entries was high and we were thoroughly impressed with the insight the children had on the safety issues we combat on site every day. “Having the students visit our site was a great way for us to showcase the project to the next generation and hopefully inspire and encourage them to look at career possibilities in the industry.”Many thanks to those who showed prospective parents and carers around last week; this showed great commitment and community- well done!Aim to get as many House Points next week to be in for the chance for some end of term prizes and treats! I hope you have a lovely weekend,

Ms Harvey

A continued congratulations to those students with 100% attendance: Robyn Smart; Troy Piedade; Lynn-Esther Kacou; Dirie Hirsi; Shakira Brown; Alea Barham and those above 96%: Anna-Ruth Stephens; Jamal Hassan; Eleesher Baker; Shai Allen; Saphyrra Dje; Daniaal Akram; Samantha Rowe; Daisy Fieldhouse-Still; Jimena Arias; Simon Allen; Amber Miller; Isabelle Barton-Young; Lauren Cook; Kenny Tovar Sanchez; Abubaker Tighrini; Eugenia Gomez; Simon Allen; Jordan Ruby; Cameron Robb; Shae Clarke. This is our biggest list since the beginning of term and shows a great commitment from the last four of you to raise your attendance. Well done! It was also great to see Dr Stanley’s tutor group getting 96.5% attendance last week, beating the school target!

Congratulations as well to the student of the week, Lauren Cook, nominated by Miss Hughes as she never shows complaint, behaves excellently and has improved her homework a lot recently. I was also very pleased to see Jordan, Kayla, Bethany, Eleesher and Duejon working so well in Maths this week, and Lynn-Esther, Abigail, Jasmine and Shae Clarke being praised for your commitment in History. Keep it up!

As it is our last week of term next week you all need to make sure you finish on a high, ensuring all uniform and equipment is perfect, and your commitment and effort, in and out of lessons, is exemplary. You were all outstanding on Tuesday when we had visitors on Tuesday and I expect the same every day.

POPE, LeoPIEDADE, TroyPIEDADE, TeonOSMAN, AbdikadirLAGDEN, JosephCongratulations to the following pupils in Dickens House for upholding the 6 pillars this week:

ELGHAILANI, KamalCOYLE, ShaniaAHMED, DanyalABEBERESE, Ashia

Thursday evening was an important and exciting time for Year 9, when they had the opportunity to speak to teachers and to think about the courses that they are thinking of following over the next two years. If I could take this opportunity to remind everyone of the timeline:

KEY DATES1. Thursday 19th March Options Evening for Year 9 Students and Parents.2. Wednesday 25th March-deadline for completed option forms to be given to Ms White3. Tuesday 14th April-Friday 17th April-individual student interviews to discuss choices4. Friday 24th April-all students, parents and carers to be informed of final option choices5. Thursday 30th April-deadline for any request for changes to option choices.

I hope the careers workshop has helped students to consider their strengths and it was informative meeting staff and being able to talk through the options available. It is obviously important to return the Option forms on the Wednesday deadline to try and ensure students get their preferred choices.

Have a good weekend.

D. Glyn-Year 9.

After the assembly, about the Holocaust, delivered by Hareem and Harry, I think that we need to make sure that we do not discriminate and persecute others for their beliefs and values. Hopefully, the following quote will inspire you to stop discrimination:

Congratulations to the following pu-pils in Dickens House for achieving 100% attendance so far this year:

The Holocaust illustrates the consequences of prejudice, racism and stereotyping on a society. It forces us to examine the responsibilities of citizenship and confront the powerful ramifications of indifference and inaction.Tim Holden

Sports AnnouncementsThe Year 7 team lost 10-5 to Graveney on Thursday afternoon. We were 2-0 up early on due to two goals from Joseph ifayomi. Unfortunately Graveney edged their way back into the game and we were 3-2 down at half time. Graveney fielded a whole new line up for the 2nd half and their fresh legs showed as they hit 3 goals in quick succession. Goals from Simeon, Amiya, Louis and a third goal from Joseph got us back in the game, but it was too little too late. Well done to all our players!

Students

Students from Heathmere School have been attending APA to take part in a project called Activate. Thank you to the Science team for running a session afterschool last week and to Miss Sin-gleton for hosting a Drama session on Tuesday. Next week it’s the PE depart-ment’s turn!

Yr 9 Macbeth Theatre Trip

On Tuesday The English Department took Year 9 to see a performance of Macbeth in Richmond in preparation for their GCSE English Literature next year. The students were lucky enough to have front row seats, and were right in the middle of the action. They were all impeccably behaved and really did the academy proud, even when the perfor-mance got very scary!

Jack Petchey Speak Out Awards - Huge Congratulations to Ibrahim and

LeahAs if wiping the board in the chess tournament wasn’t enough for APA this week, Leah and Ibrahim tonight took part in the regional finals of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, competing against other schools in the borough, and were both absolutely incredible.

Leah’s beautifully written speech was delivered flawlessly, and Ibrahim’s was also brilliant. So brilliant in fact, that he came first! Both students were a credit to the school. Thanks to the staff who came along to support, and to those who have helped the students out in school leading up to the competition.Ibrahim won himself £100 and will now go onto the grand final and be in with a chance of winning £1000 for himself, and £1000 for the school.

Berlin 2015 History Trip

Last week Mr Jenkins, Mr Ferguson, Miss Wallis, Miss Rowe and a group of students from years 9-13 embarked on a four day history trip to Berlin. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from all year groups to fully immerse in the city’s rich history and culture. The group visited a number of Berlin’s most famous monuments including Checkpoint Charlie, the East Side gallery which is on an existing part of the Berlin Wall, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and the TV tower.Everyone on the trip, including staff gained historical knowledge from the places visited. There were also many new friendships formed... while we waited for Hayley to get ready in the morning.

The group stood outside the (H)Ostel where we stayed

Peace of mindLots of parents are worried about how and when to introduce their child safely to smartphones and tablets. Social networking and the internet, play a big part inchildren falling victim to cyber bullying, scams and harassment from others. With children as young as 8 regularly being given expensive devices as a fashion accessory, surely there should be something in place to protect and educate them in the dangers of the internet. Ark Putney Academy and the PTA are working closely to introduce new technology that will protect and give peace of mind to those that need it. By installing a simple free app onto the device and creating an online account, you will have instant peace of mind that your child can use their phone the way that it is intended - safely !Get in touch with us or go to www.mobileguardian.com for details. The service is exclusively free for APA with the voucher code ARK30250

Do You Shop Online? If you shop online, you can help raise vital funds for the school by going to www.easyfundraising.org. All you need to do is create an account and use it just like you would use google. Easyfundraising notes where you are shopping andsends a percentage of your total spend back to the nominated organisation such as Ark Putney Academy at no cost to you ! £37.80 has been raised so far by just a few people and we want your help to raise more this year. There are lots of big names associated with the scheme like Amazon, Ebay and M&S. You can even use it to book a holiday. What’s more it doesn’t cost you a penny! All money raised will go back to the school and the PTA pledges to ensure that this money is used to benefit the students directly. Please sign up today and if you need any help or advice, please contact the PTA.

At what cost?A new report by the Children’s Society called at what cost, suggests that lots of parents in the U.K struggle to pay for school uniform. The average annual cost of purchasing official school uniform is reported to be £159 per year including P.E kit. The PTA would like to introduce a recycling scheme where uniform can be made available for purchase at affordable rates, but to do this we need your help!We are now accepting donations of APA uniform via reception. Please ensure that all donations are bagged for the attention of the PTA.

Announcement: The next PTA meeting will take place at 6 p.m on Wednesday 25th March in the

library. We look forward to seeing you there.

Carol, a twelve-year-old Spanish-Amer-ican girl from New York, travels with her mother to Spain in the spring of 1938, at the height of the Civil War. Separated from her beloved father, Carol arrives in her mother’s home village and transforms the secretive family environment. Her innocence and rebellious nature drive her at first to reject a world that is at once new and foreign. But she soon journeys into adulthood through a friendship with Maruja, the village teacher, and a young local boy, Tomiche.
