Welcome to the 2011-12 wrap-up edition of the Princeton Varsity Club News! It has been another wonderful year for Princeton Athletics, and we could not be more thankful for the steadfast support of the alumni and donors who help make everything that you will read about in this newsletter possible. This issue is devoted to recognizing and remembering the myriad accomplishments of the Great Class of 2012, and celebrating the 2011-12 academic year.

We begin by expressing gratitude for the continued dedication of the PVC Awards Banquet table sponsors. Their generosity allows the PVC to properly recognize the entire graduating class of senior student-athletes, along with the standout achievements of individual class members on the fields of play, in the classroom, and in the community.

Chad Wiedmaier ’12 (lacrosse) and Lauren Edwards ’12 (basketball) provide fine examples of the multi-faceted achievements of Tiger athletes. Wiedmaier and Edwards each received Princeton Athletics’ awards for high achievement on the fields of play, receiving the William Winston Roper Trophy and the C. Otto von Kienbusch Award, respectively. They were each also recognized for their work in the community, as winners of the Art Lane ’34 Award. Their spectacular efforts, along with those of this year’s other award recipients, are discussed in the following pages.

Interspersed between award presentations at each year’s banquet, one male and one female member of the senior class are asked to give their “final oral exam” in the form of a keynote address. Highlights from this year’s senior keynotes, Devona Allgood ’12 (basketball) and Clay Blackiston ’12 (squash), are included in these pages. A few thoughts are also included from legendary Tiger All-American Redmond “Reddy” C.S. Finney ’51, the 2012 recipient of the prestigious Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Award. Later in the issue, we will reflect on 2011-12 with a pictorial tribute that highlights many of the memorable PVC events held throughout the academic year. This includes PVC on the Road events in Virginia, New York and Philadelphia; Weapons of Mass Construction and the first-ever PVC Service Circle community projects; the Jake McCandless ’51 PVC Speaker Series; as well as a number of other events supported by the PVC to unite the entire Princeton Athletics community.

This edition of the PVC News closes by recognizing those who have supported the PVC during this academic year. As always, we are extremely appreciative of your support of the Princeton Varsity Club and your dedication to providing the best student-athlete experience in the nation. Through your generosity, Princeton University continues to be a truly exceptional place where our student-athletes receive an unmatched “Education Through Athletics.”

We hope you enjoy this special issue of the PVC’s signature publication, and we look forward to seeing you in 2012-13! Go TIGERS!

Senior Keynote Speaker Excerpts2012 PVC Awards Banquet:

Clay Blackiston ’12Squash

Devona Allgood ’12Basketball

Although our collegiate careers can be uniquely called our own, I am sure that there are at least a few things that we can relate to. For instance, we’ve all been given motivational speeches from our coaches, or maybe our teammates. The women’s basketball team certainly has; but there is one speech in particular that will stick with me forever. While I cannot remember the exact game, I distinctly remember the reactions of me and my teammates and what was written on the whiteboard. Cutting our eyes back and forth to one another, we silently laughed as Coach read the words “We Are Who We Are.”

We equated these words to a song that should be pretty familiar to most of the athletes; if your coach didn’t say them, you’ve at least heard these words from Ke-$-ha, otherwise known as Kesha, who is a well-known pop artist. So what would our coach know about Kesha? Typically, Kesha is given a hard time about her music, but I’ve found, as my coach apparently did, that she makes a great point with this song title.

We are who we are. These words stood out to me because they required me to actually think about who we were. What made our team a team? What separated us from the rest of the Ivy League? Though some of the greatest takeaways from being a Princeton athlete include competing against the best competition, going to one of the best academic institutions, and entering into a network of unyieldingly supportive people, I’ve found that one of the most important opportunities we are given is to find out who we are. But not just as a sports team, as individuals of this greater University and this greater world... Four years here can teach any of us that we are more than the athlete who competes on the court, on the field or in the pool.

Alumnus Reddy Finney ’51 is an exact example of an athlete whose influences reach far beyond the boundaries of his sports. The tradition of success set by him and his fellow alums will be continued through every Princeton varsity athlete here. Upon graduation however, our success will no longer be determined by how many games we win, how many years we can add to our championship banners or how many tournament appearances we make. Our success will be determined by who we are.

Being a student-athlete at Princeton has given us a head start on being successful, and though the reputation behind such a status may play a part in how, I am instead referring to the customs that are a standard part of being a student athlete at Princeton. For example, attending classes fatigued from an early morning lift has taught us to be daydreamers; but not the daydreamers we all think of. The daydreamer as defined by writer Thomas Edward Lawrence, who dreams with their eyes open so that they may make their dreams possible. Successfully completing an assignment the night before its due date thanks to our athletic schedules has taught us to be procrastinators; but not the lazy procrastinators we all think of. The procrastinator who understands that success will not happen immediately, yet may only be reached at the very last tolerable minute. Walking through campus in our comfortable Princeton athletic gear has taught us be conformists; but not the mindless conformists we all think of. The conformist who strives to carry on the tradition of pride, success and community that Princeton embodies. We are what we do; we are what we practice; we are who we are.

[When] I arrived on campus as a freshman, I was elated to play on the Princeton squash team. Bob Callahan, who has been coaching for 30 years at Princeton, said our team that year had the best lineup in Princeton squash history. That was the year we were going to win it all and finally beat Trinity, who had extended their winning streak now to 201 matches in a row.

In the finals of the National Championship in Jadwin Gym that year, we faced off against Trinity. After six hours of squash, it all came down to our number-one player. He was up five-zero in the fifth and final game, but once again, somehow, Trinity’s player came back, and won the match. Trinity had beaten us in the finals of nationals for four years in a row.

A week later, I wrote my coach, saying that I felt like someone had died. In a sense, something had died; at least, within me. The Dream had died. I realized that there was no point in caring about squash. We had just had the best team in Princeton history, and we still couldn’t win with it.

I think all of us enter this existential crisis at one point or another. As you go through the daily motions and grinds of your life, you wonder, “What is the point in doing this?” Squash, at the end of the day, is just two opponents smacking a rubber ball against a wall, and we declare winners and losers at the end. But, who cares?

This year, my attitude began to change. From the first day I stepped on campus, I had one prevailing thought: graduation. It dawned on me that this was my last chance to play college squash. I started to regain my heart and believe once again that we could finally beat Trinity.

On a weekend that felt ominously similar to my freshman year, nationals were at home again this year. And in the finals, lo and behold, it was us versus Trinity. After going down four-two in matches, we then tied the score back at four-all. Once again, it all came down to one match. This time, finally, that last match went our way. That day was the happiest day of my life. But much more importantly, what I have just told you is the most incredible story that I have ever been a part of.

I have realized that a total of a few thousand or so people would even find out about our victory. Most people, even those fans who were ecstatically cheering for us in the front row, had moved on with their lives after about a week. So in a sense, we really had been just smacking a rubber ball around a court. So what was the point?

Being a part of a story, and creating our own stories is perhaps the most important thing we can do with our lives. What are our lives, other than stories that we each author? We must create these stories, regardless of whether or not they will become New York Times bestsellers.

In order to do so, we must avoid having the jaded attitude that I had my sophomore and junior year. We must have the naiveté of a freshman to give of ourselves without hesitation to a dream we believe in. And most of all, we must have the desperation of a graduating senior; reminding ourselves that this precious life is our last chance.

THE MARVIN BRESSLER AWARD

CLASS OF 1916 CUP

The Marvin Bressler Award is given annually to that member of the Princeton family, who, through heartfelt support of the University’s student-athletes and coaches, best embodies a belief in the lifelong lessons taught by competition and athletics as a complement to the overall educational mission. It is awarded in the spirit of Marvin Bressler, a professor of sociology at Princeton from 1963-94.

During his current 20-year term as the Director of Dining Services at Princeton, Stu Orefice has ushered Princeton’s culinary outlets through a period of unparalleled growth and expansion while also working closely with the Department of Athletics.

While working as the Director of Dining Services, Orefice has overseen the redesign of nearly every facet of the University’s culinary operations. With the opening of Frist Campus Centerin 2001 and the move to the four-year college system in 2007, he reorganized the entire house and retail dining structure, implementing a more customer-friendly and operationally efficient “marketplace-style” system throughout.

He has been very involved in implementing and promoting green initiatives as well. Cafe Vivian, located in Frist Campus Center, serves only products that are organic, local, humanely raised, and/or socially just. Under Orefice’s guidance, Princeton became the first university to become a full “Seafood Watch Partner” with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, ensuring that only sustainable seafood is served on campus.

Orefice has remained connected with Athletics on a continuous basis since arriving at Princeton. He is member of the Academic-Athletic Fellows program, serves as the in-game clock operator for men’s basketball, and opened the Backcourt Bistro in Jadwin Gym for men’s basketball games in 2004. He was made an honorary member of the Class of 2008 for “progressive leadership and vision with foodservices and for his support of student-athletes in all of their endeavors.”

THE CLASS OF 1967 PVC CITIZEN-ATHLETE AWARD

2012 PVC Awards Banquet:

The Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Award is presented by the Class of 1967 for selfless and noble contributions to sport and society.

While at Princeton, Reddy Finney was a three-sport standout. During his senior year, he was named Grantland Rice All-American Center for football, captain of the wrestling team and All-America in lacrosse. He was also the 1951 winner of the prestigious William Winston Roper Trophy, which is bestowed upon a Princeton man of high scholastic rank, outstanding qualities of sportsmanship and general proficiency in athletics.

Upon graduation from Princeton, Finney joined the U.S. Navy Amphibious Corps, spending two years in Korea. In 1954, he began a 38-year term of service at his preparatory alma mater, the Gilman School.

For 14 years, Finney taught history, math and religion, while also coaching football, wrestling and lacrosse (and earning an M. Ed. from Harvard in 1958). In 1968, he began a 24-year term as Headmaster of the Baltimore preparatory school, where he had excelled as a student-athlete. In 1947, he won five consecutive faceoffs, leading to five consecutive goals, in the waning minutes of competition to lead the Greyhounds to their first-ever Maryland Scholastic Association lacrosse championship. In recognition of his achievements and service to the school, the Gilman athletic complex is named in his honor.

Finney has given back to Princeton in many ways, including serving as an Alumni Trustee, Class President, Class Secretary, Career Service Volunteer, and Maclean Society Member.

Reddy Finney Acceptance Speech Highlights:

“I have thought of school work as always being willing to say something; but I don’t feel like saying anything now. And I’ll tell you why. I’m so extremely impressed, with not only the athetic accomplishments of the wonderful undergraduates here now, and all they’ve done in community service, in some of the most creative, imaginative outlets that I’ve ever heard... I would invite a lot of you to come to [Gilman], and talk to those kids, and really show them what life is all about.”

“I had a wonderful time at Princeton... I’ll be honest with you, when I arrived on the doorstep of Princeton, I had heard a lot about it from my father and grandfather, and I was really scared... but I gained some of the most wonderful friends that I’ve ever known, many of whom are still friends now. I also met some faculty members and coaches, whom I’ll never forget.

Redmond “Reddy” C.S. Finney ’51

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) clearly defines permissible recruiting activities involving enrolled and prospective student-athletes. Under NCAA guidelines, alumni may not provide “extra benefits” to ENROLLED STUDENT-ATHLETES that are not available to all other students at the University. Some examples of “extra benefits” are:

• Arranging, providing or co-signing a loan.• Providing any financial support to cover educational and/or general expenses for Princeton.• Providing any gifts or transportation.• Providing a ticket or a discounted rate to any entertainment event.• Providing parents, family or friends of a student-athlete free admission to a banquet, dinner, or other function.• Providing a meal to a student-athlete (except in your home on an occasional basis).• Providing a meal to the parent(s) of a student-athlete.

As a general rule, the NCAA prohibits involvement by alumni (and other “boosters” or “representatives of an institution’s athletics interests”) in the recruitment of PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES. Because of the Ivy League’s extensive and valued use of alumni in recruiting ALL students, however, the NCAA has granted a limited exception to some of its contact rules. Only members of the local SCHOOLS COMMITTEES are covered under this exception. If you are a member of the local schools committee, please contact the Compliance Office for a complete explanation of the limited exception. If you are not a local Schools Committee member, you are prohibited from any contact with prospective student-athletes, including correspondence and telephone calls.

REMEMBER ... IMPROPER CONTACT OR ACTIVITY BY ALUMNI CAN RENDER A STUDENT, AND IN SOME CASES AN ENTIRE TEAM, INELIGIBLE FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITION.

If you have any questions, contact the Compliance Office at (609) 258-4948 or [email protected].

A Message to Alumni from the Department of Athletics
