Blue Ridge Landfill is the only truly “green” landfill in

the Mid-Atlantic region. Our award-winning landfill gas-

to-energy recovery system, developed in partnership

with PPL Renewable Energy (PPLRE) and the Borough

of Chambersburg, captures naturally occurring methane

gas, which otherwise would be burned off, and converts it

to electricity. We have a power plant on site that converts

the captured methane to electricity. The landfill generates

6.4 mega watts of electricity daily which is placed on the

4 mile feeder line to the Borough’s Cree substation.

Launched in 2013, the landfill-gas-to-energy plant

now supplies approximately 15 percent of the

Borough’s electricity needs, powering the equivalent

of 4,000 homes.

Operating 24/7, this project offers the potential to avoid

the production of more than 40,000 tons of carbon

dioxide emissions each year. That produces the same

environmental benefit as taking 7,000 cars off the road,

eliminating the consumption of 4 million gallons of

gasoline, or reducing the importation of 80,000 barrels

of oil annually. In addition, the project generates 50,000

renewable energy credits (RECs) annually toward

meeting the state’s RPS goal.
