Definition

The Pythagorean Theorem is the relationship between the sides of

a right triangle.

Page 3: Pythagorean Theorem

Formula

The formula for the Pythagorean Theorem is:

ASQ + BSQ = CSQ

Page 4: Pythagorean Theorem

Discovery

The first person to recognize the relationship between the two sides of

a right triangle was a Greek mathematician named Pythagoras

Page 5: Pythagorean Theorem

Hypotenuse

The side opposite of the right angle.

Page 6: Pythagorean Theorem

Legs

The two sides that form the right angle. The legs are usually

referred to as A and B.

Page 7: Pythagorean Theorem

Use

You can use the Pythagorean theorem to find any side of a right triangle.

Page 8: Pythagorean Theorem

Example steps 1 and 2

If you leg A is 5in you square it and

it is 25in. Then you take leg B

that is 4in and you

square it and it is 16in. 4in

5in ?

Page 9: Pythagorean Theorem

Example step 3

The last step is to add the 25 and 16

together which is 41. Then you find the square

root and it makes

about 6.4. So that is the answer

5in

4in

?=6.4
