You need 8 manila folders. Print out all the station labels and problems. Glue the station label to the outside of the folder. There are two pages

of problems, and each page gets glued to the inside of the manila

folders. To make it look nice, I glue the pages to construction paper and then glue that to the manila folder. Laminating the manila folders will help to keep the stations nice for

years to come. Also, pages 4-5 are the recording sheet for this activity.

Copy front and back for each student.

You need to have 8 groups of

students, and each group of students will be at a station. Student groups will rotate throughout the stations

during the activity.

I group the desks together to make the stations, with a manila folder at

each of the grouping of desks. Students work together to complete the problems, and when it is time to switch, students rotate clockwise to

the next station.

This activity can take up to two days, depending on your class time available and the level of your

students. I use two days, with groups completing four stations each day.

I give the groups about 10-12 minutes

per station. Using a timer on your projector really helps the students

work at a pace to complete the stations within the allotted time.

Two ships leave port at same time. Ship X is

heading due north and Ship Y is heading due east. Twelve hours later

they are 600 miles apart. If the Ship X had traveled 480 miles from the port, how many miles had Ship Y traveled?

A roofer needs to repair some shingles on the roof of a house, and uses a 12-foot ladder to reach the roof. In order to clear the bushes, the roofer puts the ladder 5 feet out from the side of the house. What is the height of the house from the ground to the beginning of the roof? Round your answer to the nearest tenth of a foot.

To get from point A to point B you must avoid walking

through a pond. To avoid the pond, you must walk 34

meters south and 41 meters east. To the nearest meter, how many meters would be saved if it were possible to walk through the pond?
