Evonik launches ABIL Soft AF 200 and300 for hair conditioning

Evonik offers two new aminopropyldimethicone products for effective hairconditioning. ABIL Soft AF 200 hasbeen optimized for clear shampooformulations, while ABIL Soft AF 300is designed for use in conditioningrinses. The new products are almostcolourless liquids with low odour andlow viscosities, which makes themeasy to handle and process. Theperformance of the new products isdue to an optimal alignment of thefunctional groups along the polymer.The content of cyclic silicones, D4and D5, is very low, and due to theabsence of secondary amines thereis no risk of nitrosamine formation.

AkzoNobel Global Personal Care’sDissolvine GL-47-S chelate has beencertified as a bio-based product asdesignated by the US Dept ofAgriculture’s BioPreferredprogramme. Based on natural andrenewable L-glutamic acid, DissolvineGL-47-S is claimed to be readilybiodegradable and a strongsequestrant [Focus on Surfactants,May 2007]. The product can be usedin cosmetics and personal careproducts including bath and showerproducts, hair care products andwipes.

SCCS to review use of propyl and butylparabens in cosmetics

The European Commission’sScientific Committee on ConsumerSafety (SCCS) has been requested toreview propyl and butyl parabens,which are used as preservatives toextend the shelf life of personal careproducts. Parabens are authorized aspreservatives in entry 12 of Annex VIto the Cosmetics Directive at amaximum concentration of 0.4%when used individually or 0.8% whenused as a mixture of esters, but thereare concerns regarding theirendocrine disrupting potential. In Oct2011, the SCCS (SCCS/1446/11)adopted a clarification to its previousopinion in light of a Danish ban on theuse of propyl- and butylparaben incosmetic products for children up tothree years of age. In Mar 2012, aMember State presented the resultsof a study on the reproductive toxicityof propylparaben to the WorkingGroup on Cosmetic Products. Thestudy showed no effects on thereproductive parameters andtherefore did not confirm theconclusions of the previous studiesthat pointed towards negative effectson reproduction. The SCCS nowneeds to consider if its previousopinions on propyl- andbutylparabens need to be updated.

PZ Cussons undaunted by Nigerianstorms

The soap maker said sales inits key Nigerian market were likely tobe lower than last year because ofsocial unrest in the country andsevere weather conditions. However,better trading conditions in Australiaand the UK mean overall profits arelikely to be about 10% higher when itreports in Jan 2013. Cussons saidcost-saving measures had improvedthe profitability of its Australianbusiness.
