Process Experts Improve Lean Success

Martin Nazareth, President of OpEx Solutions

In our continued quest for a solution to the problem of unsuccessful and unsustainable implementation of Lean and other operational excellence systems, we conducted a panel discussion on leadership traits for successful transformation at the IIE Annual Conference. Panelists and audience from companies like John Deere, DuPont, MD Anderson, Boeing, FedEx, UPS, Edwards Lifesciences, Premier, Office Depot, OpEx Solutions, and others actively participated in the discussion.

Top ten new gaps (not covered in our previous articles) include:

Starting to see resistance to the term “Lean” largely due to failed application of tools

Lean experts have led companies by spending a dollar to save a dime

Eliminating waste comes naturally to Asians and it does not to the Americans

Leadership is not engaged and has not learned the tools — does not lead by example

Need to drive past integration to make continuous improvement part of companies’ DNA — normal way of doing business

Burning platform in healthcare (current/future changes) — too reactive

Growth through acquisitions impedes stability and continuous improvement

Lean is applied to production operations and seldom to product development or service

Only 20% of organizations lead their transformation using degreed industrial engineers (IEs)

Lean tools are basic IE tools — the more we break down IE tools, the less effective they become

The good news is that we see a new trend. Process and technical experts are starting to take the lead with the true intent of making operations successful rather than taking pride in implementing tools. They are bridging the original gap, in the American companies, of not involving the doers. With the economic challenges, the unions are also cooperating better than they ever did before.

The recommendations that came out of the session include:

Proper transformation solves key problems rather than tool implementation

Process and technical experts are best suited to solve the problems

CenTex Consortium: Supply Chain Excellence

Keeping costs down while ensuring excellence in suppliers is of paramount importance in this very competitive market. The June 7th CenTex OpEx Consortium (COC) Leader Strategy Session (LSS) focused on Supply Chain Excellence — giving leaders the opportunity to dissect this vital topic and learn from each other how to deal with these issues effectively.

The session, held in Brenham, TX at the MIC Group, brought together ten leaders from five organizations to compare domestic and international supply chain operations and best practices for coping with the delicate balance of quality, flow, logistics and partnerships with suppliers. One of the salient points to come from the discussion was to treat suppliers as part of your extended enterprise.

Revamping Journey

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

— Winston Churchill

Change is necessary for progress...but nobody said it would be easy. The CenTex OpEx Consortium (COC) is very aware of this and members are always there to share their experiences and expertise with each other as all face revamping at different stages in their growth. A benchmarking session focusing on TASUS’ Revamping Journey was held May 17th at TASUS in Georgetown, Texas.

The thirteen participants from eight

organizations came together to tour the TASUS facilities after TASUS shared a

presentation on their history and growth. TASUS manufacturing includes injection, dual

-blow, and extrusion molding

mostly for the automotive

industry. TASUS is adding new

equipment to keep up with their

growth. In addition, TASUS is

managing their company to

ensure that growth is controlled

by the 14 steps of TPS with

emphasis on Principle 3 — use

pull systems to avoid

overproduction.

Participants gave TASUS the

benefit of their know-how in

dealing with growth and

feedback on the positive things

TASUS is currently doing and

putting into place to cope with their growth.
