Q3) What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

By Shaji Chiarelli

Page 2: Q3 Evaluation Question

Audience feedback was important in a lot of the stages of construction and also some

research, in finding out and tailoring everything I done to the correct audience and construct a video and digi-pak to the

standards expected. If it was not a success when I probed with potential audience

members then I adjusted to the feedback given.

WEBSITE

Artist Website (First Draft)My first attempt at the website was very simple, a title “wonderman” for his latest single and the video underneath it Stories with the download on itunes option. The colour scheme was also just red, with the picture of the artist taking up the whole of the background, similar to one of the hip-hop artists I had seen when researching websites.

From two screenshots this is the final artist website, after having taken on board audience feedback from another student of media and therefore knowledgeable on the topic. I added more social media but still kept the simplicity by laying out the pictures neatly and having no real background image.

From audience feedback the individual designs were not al bad, however the combination did not satisfy the audience and some found it quite plain. Therefore after having played around with all the different designs and how they were displayed, this was my final digi-pak design. An example of changing the combination of covers was putting the initial front cover on the back cover, and making a logo front cover from scratch apart from the universal picture. The reason for that was because of previous research and audience feedback pointing towards a preference to album digi-paks with the artist not present on all covers. This disproves Andrew Goodwins Star theory which states that audiences look for the artist and towards the artist specifically, for self identification, because it seemed that the audience preferred not to see much of him on the Digi-Pak, which is why the front cover has a enigma code brought by a lack of image of the artist, especially because he would be a new and upcoming artist.

Sending the link of the first draft to possible audience members

I tended to ask for constructive criticism and what I could do better, because I knew that our group had more time to correct mistakes and further tailor the video to what it’s audience would like. It turned out that narrative was not as clear as it could have been, and we would have had to do more editing and quicker cutting of shots, for example cutting in and out of different angles of performance shots.

After having considered all feedback from the target audience with things such as shot speed and narrative clarity, we decided to upload the final finished video onto youtube. Overall I’m content with the video and firmly believe that it adheres to it’s genre conventions enough so that it is clearly a Hip-Hop music video, yet with differences that allow it to stand out within the genre and give it a uniqueness. The reason for the decision to upload was also that the narrative was now clear for the audience and therefore they could be taken on this journey of entertainment. An example of a slower shot which we decided to keep despite audience feedback was the final shot, which lasts over 5 seconds and rounds off the narrative by the actor running over his glasses, symbolising the end of the old him. This proves that not all shots in Hip-Hop music videos have to be covertly and quickly cut to be successful. All in all the audience are happy with the final video, as are we.
