The Nittany Nation arrived in full force in Philadelphia on the weekend of November 9-10 for the showdown with the Temple Owls. By the end of the Saturday afternoon, everyone knew that Lincoln Field was really Beaver Stadium East as the Lions obliterated the Hawks in front of a record Temple crowd of 69,000. To rally the troops Penn Staters gathered at Mad River Bar and Grill for a party of epic proportions. Over 300 fans gathered to enjoy food, drink, music, and revelry with the Nittany Lion, Penn State Cheerleaders and Dancers, and Alumni Association staff. Great prizes were raffled and everyone left excited for the early morning pep rally and game. Never ones to miss a good tailgating opportunity, Penn Staters gathered in the Lincoln Field parking lots at 8a.m. to get in the spirit (and the spirits) before joining fellow alumni and friends in the pre-game pep rally tent hosted by the Penn State Alumni Association. The local Delaware Valley Chapters (four in PA and one in DE and NJ) partnered with the African-American Alumni Organization (AAAO) and the Philadelphia Professional Women’s Network partnered to provide entertainment through beanbag contests for kids. They also gave out most spirited trophies to various alumni throughout the tent. This set the stage for an all time spectacular pep rally led by Penn State President Graham Spanier, the Penn State Blue Band, the Nittany Lion, the Penn State Cheerleaders and our featured twirler. The crowd of over 1,000 fans was more than ready to cheer on the Lions as they took the field and demolished the Owls. Everyone had a great time and we look forward to the team’s next visit to Philadelphia. Special thanks to Kristi Fortney and the Penn State Alumni Association staff for their support in planning the festivities, to Max and the Mad River Bar and Grille for hosting us on Friday night and doing a great job, and to the representatives of the Chapters and Alumni Interest Groups (AIGs) who worked with us to create a successful representation of Penn State in the Philadelphia area. Heartfelt thanks goes to the Philadelphia Chapter Activities Director Jamyra Perry and President Jamie Nelson for their ongoing support and enthusiasm. Finally thank you to all of you who came to any of the activities through the weekend.

On Saturday November 3rd the Chapter and the Adam Taliaferro Foundation held their annual fundraising event at Mad River Bar and Grill. Changing pace from pervious years we held it during the Chapters TailGreat for Penn State’s 26-19 win over Purdue. Founded by Adam Taliaferro, his friends, family and his high school coach Larry Ginsburg, the foundation seeks to provide financial and educational support to student athletes who have experienced catastrophic head or spinal injuries in sanctioned team events in the Greater Delaware Valley and New Jersey; and to provide educational and financial support related to research, prevention and care of such injuries. These goals are accomplished through direct grants for injured athletes and an annual Medical Symposium for Athletic Trainers, EMT’s, ER doctors and nurses, physical therapists and coaches. Awareness of the Foundation’s goals is raised through several events throughout the year, including the Adam Taliaferro All Star Football Classic held every June at Rowan University.

As the year comes to an end there is still time to get involved and show your Penn State Pride. On Saturday December 15th the Chapter is scheduled for our Annual Foodbank Shift. This chapter tradition is a great way to give back for the Holidays. The 8:30 to Noon shift takes place at Philabundance Northern Liberties location. We need volunteers to help sort and package donated food so that it can be distributed to local food banks. Philabundance is the areas only food distributor and with out our help it can’t do its job. Remember no open toed shoes! Contact Mark Bagley at [email protected].

Our recruitment of the Class of 2021, 2022 or beyond has begun!! The Philadelphia Chapter has adopted the third grade students from the First Philadelphia Charter School. Their teacher, Mr. Ira Somers is a Penn State alum who sees the value in teaching his students about college as early as possible. While other classes have learned about Temple, UCLA, and UNC-Chapel Hill, this class chose to learn about Penn State. Their class name, "We Are..."!! First on the Penn State experience list, eating

grilled stickies! Next, visit a Penn State campus. See the article from The Daily News that recounts the students journey into the Abington campus on December 11th. Go to http://www.philly.com/philly/education/20071211___ They_were_in_love_by_the_time_their_feet_hit_the_pavement_.html We are also working on sending the students up to University Park sometime in the spring. If you are interested in joining us as we show our young recruits the Penn State spirit, please contact Darryl Bundrige at [email protected].

You had no idea. You just weren’t prepared to

get that kind of reaction. Here you are, no one in the middle of no where (or that’s

what it seems) trying to land your first job, armed with your resume, your degree, and a heady mix of self-confidence and self-

doubt. Someone sees you’re from Penn State and that’s when it starts. Oh, you need to talk with so-and-so, the human resource rep says. She’s a big Penn

Stater, you’re told. And you do. And she is a tasteful Nittany Lion photo adorns her office wall, a JoePa mug sits jewel-like on her shelf. And, while she doesn’t have a job opening, she knows of one in another department. So your resume

gets passed on with a big stamp of approval from the big Penn State fan. Wow. So that’s how it happens. You had no idea. And that’s when you realize. You really should become a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association.

{Penn State forever. Become a life member in the Penn State Alumni Association}
