QA and Testing Services in a Safety-Critical Environment
ChallengesThe client was working on control software for aircraft engines and needed help with verification and testing of the software. There was a large amount of work that came in waves, which presented a challenge for the client. The in-house employees and resources were not sufficient to handle the large influx of testing work that was to be done.

performance tests. By running tests, the client would be able to obtain valid results
that can be used to improve the performance and reliability of the system.

An engineering company working on software for aircraft engine controls asked Comtrade to provide verification and testing services to ensure product reliability and safety, as well as meet product delivery deadline.
As the product had to be developed in line with the highest security and safety standards, the client needed a partner who is highly experienced in functional safety. Also, as the tasks were embedded in the overall project, meeting all deadlines and quality standards was mandatory.
Solution
Comtrade supported the client by providing a team of experienced engineers and project manager who are well versed in all aspects of quality assurance and testing services, particularly in a safety-critical environment. Comtrade also took care of the operation and maintenance of the customer-owned toolchain, development and execution of the tests and test management. Comtrade’s engineering team performed unit tests and code reviews in different setups. Beyond pure testing, the customer also required development of new software components. Comtrade undertook this project along with all related testing that had to be done.
Over the course of 18 months, the work came in every 4 to 6 weeks in waves lasting approximately 4 months. Because of our flexibility, we were able to quickly ramp up and ramp down resources and support the client in the best way possible. Depending on the client’s need, the support team consisted of 11 people on average, and extended up to 20 during periods of high demand. Additionally, Comtrade was able to provide engineers on the customer’s site on a short notice, something that other outsourcing partners would not be able to do easily.

determine if a new feature was ready for release and
therefore guarantee to their clients that their system
performance would be improved.
Results DeliveredWith Comtrade’s QA and testing expertise and on demand support, the client was able to significantly extend capacity without conceding cutbacks in processes or compromising software quality. Ultimately, the client was able to deliver a high quality product that the customers demand and expect. The client also benefited from Comtrade's ability to develop software that is up to Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2.
Throughout the duration of the project, there were several peaks in workload followed by phases of slow periods. Thanks to Comtrade’s size and flexibility, these oscillations were balanced as needed, which resulted in significant savings for the client.
