Volume 1

Happy 2013 QCCKI!
I hope everyone’s having a great year so far and that you’re just as excited as I am for this
upcoming semester and year. For those of you who don’t know, the Circle K year is nearly over
and it is time to begin planning for the 2013-2014 service year. Circle K International revolves our
three tenants- service, leadership and fellowship. At our 51st annual District Convention, we focus
in on the leadership. It is the time when we retire the 2012-2013 District Board and install our
new leaders. I now invite you to consider running for a leadership position as well. This does not
mean I intend on piling on a ton of responsibilities and stress; it means I want to give you the
chance to work with other leaders who share the same visions as you. I want you to put your great
ideas into action and to show the organization what you have to offer.
If you feel you would like to work with leaders from all over NY State, serving as a District
Board member may be for you. If you enjoy taking minutes and doing organizational work, serving
as a secretary may be for you. If you are good with money and numbers, serving as a treasurer may
be for you. If you have a creative side, serving as an editor would be a great outlet for your
thoughts. If you have a passion for planning larger events and standing in front of others, serving
as a vice president or president might be the job for you.
I have been a member of the K-Family for the past 6 years and I been given the chance to
serve various positions. Each position brought its own unique experience and each one brought
me new friends that I have kept over the years. While there are responsibilities that come with
leadership positions, the friends I’ve made and the people I’ve seen grow over the years make it all
worth it. If you have any questions regarding specific leadership positions or want to share stories,
feel free to contact me at [email protected]. See you at DCON!
Yours in Service, Leadership and Fellowship,
Kelly Chan
LEADERSHIP
.
PAST EVENTS: NY SPEAKING
Hello to all you Circle K Members, both old and
new! As you know (I should hope!), Circle K embodies
three tenets- service, leadership, and fellowship. Thus,
many of the interclub events tend to revolve around
one of the specific tenets, one of these events being
New York Speaking. Can you guess which tenet NY
Speaking falls under?
Ok, 5 seconds are up! If you guessed fellowship, you
guessed correctly!
NY Speaking is annual event held in Lake George
where the clubs of New York State get together to
undergo various activities, chatting with old friends and
making some new ones along the way. The theme for
2012 was Dr. Seuss. So why is this theme important?
Well, the event generally begins and ends with a little
friendly competition, which in this case, occurred with
Dr. Seuss in mind.
The weekend started off with an introduction of
all the clubs as well as the district leaders. Given an
opportunity to showcase Circle K’s creativity, each club
recited a cheer when its name was called. As it turns
out, our very own QCCKI won the award for best club
cheer! What is even more awesome is that the cheer
followed the format of a Dr. Seuss rhyme. Ask any of us-
after all the practice we did, I’m sure no one could
possibly forget it. Afterwards was a “Kindergarten”
period, where everyone played games dating back to
our elementary school days, made various creations
with Play-Doh, and experimented with paints- I
discovered that more than a few people possess some
serious artistic talent!

PAST EVENTS: NY SPEAKING
Saturday consisted of a plethora of workshops, a
period of service, and another friendly contest.
Workshops are where fellowship shines; the ones I
attended presented many different ideas, such as how
to hold a flash mob to promote a good cause, how to
develop public skills, how to present science concepts
through projects that kids will find interesting and
entertaining (like how to make a cork “explode” from a
bottle), and more. The service project consisted of
making PBJ sandwiches for those in need. Come
evening, we had to prepare our presidents for the
“Dress your President Contest”; because we had a
change in E-board late in the service year, we thought
it’d be a good idea to have both the former and
current presidents for the event. Though QCCKI didn’t
end up taking the gold, people still agreed that Daniel
and Mariana embodied the Dr. Seuss spirit quite well;
they even danced while in costume!
Overall, the weekend was pretty fruitful. I
managed obtained a lot of contacts and plan on
keeping in touch- since we have an idea of what
others are strong in, we could collaborate on projects;
this recognition can only bolster our productivity at
future interclub events. Remember the word lifeline- it
will help you make friends at future CKI International
events. New York Speaking also gave me a chance to
get to know my own members better, particularly the
newer members such as Yasaman, Katie, and Gunjan.
Circle K prides itself on looking into future happenings.
So who’s up for District Convention in March? :^)

Blast to the Past! If haven’t been around
for a while and your
curious of what QC CKI
has been up to…. Heres
a flashback of some
events we have done!
Light the Night Walk
Breast Cancer Walk
Ronald McDonald House
These pictures of past events speak so
much about who we are and what we do as
a club. As you look at the smiling faces of the
members of QCCKI, you can see how happy
they are as they come together and selflessly
contribute their time and efforts in helping
others. This is what we are about, we do
these events to bring joy to others and make
friendships and lead a way to a great future.
If you see what I mean by this, you will
understand that QCCKI is more than just a
club, its an experience of a lifetime that you
can learn so much from. College should not
be just about studying and learning, its about
going places, doing things you have never
done before and meeting so many different
people yet coming together for a similar
purpose…to help those in need.

Rock to EliMiNaTe
Rock to EliMiNaTe is one of QCCKI’s biggest
event because every year we hold an
awesome battle of the bands type concert in
the student union ballroom and invite tons of
people to rock out and help us raise money
for the EliMiNaTe Project. With hopes of
eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus
from the world by 2015, Kiwanis is working hard
and is getting closer and closer to that goal
with every event! $1.80 saves the life of a
mother and all her unborn children and Rock
to EliMiNaTe was an awesome way to save
lives!
Blast to the Past!
Hurricane Sandy Relief
Empire Winter Social!!
Although the storm has passed and
the months have gone, people still
struggle to rebuild their lives after
losing their homes, personal
belongings, and even family and
friends. Support is always needed as
these people make an effort to
replenish their once lively homes. As
part of a community deeply
affected, we dedicate our time and
efforts into bringing a smile to those
worried faces and warmth to their
hearts. We will continue doing
hurricane relief as long as there is a
need for volunteers! So join us
whether it’s rebuilding a home,
cooking food, or even cleaning up
the aftermath CKI is always having
fun while doing something amazing!
Not only do we do service but we also attend events for
fellowship because bonding is a major part of being in a club
that involves working with so many different people of all
cultures from all over the world! The empire division winter social
is the perfect example of fellowship. Not only were the clubs
from empire division was invited, but clubs from all over the New
York District attended. Together, we took the opportunity to get
to know each other better and spend time with people who
lived so far away. That day was dedicated to ice skating and
even getting dinner together (we fit about 30 people in one
crowded restaurant that night) I met some amazing people that
day!

What is the K Family?
Kiwanis International is one of the largest service organizations
in the world with thousands of clubs in about 80 countries all
around the world. The main purpose of Kiwanis is to address the
needs of young children who face different issues such as
hunger and illness. The Kiwanis club is the adult version of Circle
K since they coordinate their own events and raise money for
similar purposes. Every Circle K has a guardian Kiwanis club
that supports them. Our supporting Kiwanis Club is Glendale
Kiwanis and they help us by attending our events, providing
guidance or financial help whenever needed and they are a
bunch of amazing people who care a lot about the world!
Key Club International is the oldest and largest service program for
high school students! Just like circle K, the clubs are led by student
board members with schools categorized in divisions, districts, and
sub regions. This organization teaches leadership through the
service of others. Clubs often hold divisional meetings and
participate in events that they decide to work on and attend
district and international conventions.
Circle K is the largest collegiate service organization in the world. This
organization is growing as students from colleges and universities
come together to serve those in need as responsible leaders. Circle
K focuses on the three tenets of service, leadership and fellowship.
Each club is led by an executive board and each school is included
as part of a division which is led by a lieutenant governer who
overlooks club activities and recruit new schools. A group of divisions
make up the district which is led by the district board which is very
much similar to the e-board of the club, except their responsibilities
are to overlook all the clubs in the district and provide assistance
and support in leadership and service.
Builders Club is the Kiwanis club for students in middle
school with more than 40,000 members worldwide with a
mission to provide members with opportunities to build
leadership and do service. This is a learning experience
for many teens!

This club is sponsored by Kiwanis. With 33,000 members in 8
nations, this club fosters growth and development in

these adults the opportunity to give back to the
community as well as meet members create lasting
