QF-4S Bloodhound 107 “Scooby”
Colors and Markings By Craig Kaston
Phantom Bureau Number 153821 was the eighth F-4S to undergo conversion to the QF-4S target drone drone configuration. It was
selected to become the fourth QF-4 to be converted to be a “Generic Electronic Warfare Platform” (GEWP) testbed. Having survived the
drone program, it is seen here at Pt. Mugu on 12 August 2004, less than three weeks after the last Navy QF-4 was shot down.
For the last-ever display of the Phantom at the Point Mugu Airshow in September 2004,
DynCorp maintainers led by Darrell “Dogg” Reed updated 107’s markings and colors to “Hi-Viz” in
two days. Identification markings were resprayed in black, the inlet warning stripe in red, and the
national insignia in red, white and blue.
Names of all of the contractor maintenance team members were painstakingly applied to the left and right inlet ramps.
The VX-30 Bloodhounds’ “Cerberus” insignia was added to the tail. Lastly, the name “Scooby” was added to the base of the rudder. Other
QF-4 dog names included “Spuds”, “Cujo”, “Muttley” and “Droopy”.
NAWC Weapons Division Targets Directorate pilots, engineers, staff, alumni and contractor maintainers commemorated the end of the 32-year Navy QF-
4 program with “Scooby” as their backdrop on 22 September 2004.
OV-10 Bronco Association efforts to preserve “Scooby” for the Memorial Air Park will prevent this from happening.
