NCEANational Certificate of Educational Achievement
• Administered by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
• The most common qualification for secondary students in New Zealand.
• There are three levels of NCEA certificate.
• Student results used by employers and for selection into tertiary institutions.
NCEA Assessment
• In each subject, skills and knowledge are assessed against a number of standards.
• A range of internal and external assessments are used to measure how well students meet these standards.
• A number of credits are awarded for achieving each standard in a course.
• Students must achieve a certain number of credits to gain an NCEA certificate.
NCEA Standards and Grades
Students can achieve two types of standards:
Achievement Standards – New Zealand curriculum based
• Excellence (E) = an outstanding performance
• Merit (M) = a very good performance
• Achieved (A) = a satisfactory performance
• Not Achieved (N) = did not meet the criteria of the standard
Unit Standards – competency based
• Achieved (A) = meets the criteria of the standard
• Not Achieved (N) = did not meet the criteria of the standard
Level 1 NCEA Certificate
• Students require 80 credits from Level 1 or higher.
• These credits must include 10 in literacy and 10 in numeracy.
• Year 11 students study 6 subjects.
• Students may study subjects from multiple levels e.g. Level 1 and 2.

Level 2 NCEA Certificate
• Students require 80 credits.
• 20 of these can come from Level 1.
• 60 credits must be from Level 2 or higher.
• Year 12 students study 6 subjects.
• Students may study subjects from multiple levels e.g. Level 2 and 3.
Level 3 NCEA Certificate
• Students require 80 credits.
• 20 of these can come from Level 2.
• 60 credits must be from Level 3.
• Year 13 students study 5 subjects.

NCEA Endorsements
When students perform consistently above the ‘Achieved’ level their result(s) can be ‘endorsed’ to reflect that high achievement. This can occur at either the Certificate or individual course level.
Endorsements are recorded on a students record of achievement.
Certificate Endorsement
• NCEA endorsed with Merit:• 50 credits achieved at Merit level or higher accumulated across all subjects.
• NCEA endorsed with Excellence:• 50 credits achieved at Excellence level accumulated across all subjects.

Course Endorsements
• Awarded in individual courses (subjects).
• Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:• 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence level; and
• At least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards.
Scholarship
• New Zealand scholarship assessment enables candidates to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able students in each subject.
• Assessment is by either a written/spoken examination or report of work produced throughout the year.
• Approximately 3% of Year 13 students each subject at Level 3 are awarded a Scholarship, if they reach the set standard.

University Entrance
University Entrance (UE) is the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand University. To qualify students require:
• NCEA Level 3
• Three subjects – at Level 3, made up of:• 14 credits each, in three approved subjects.
• Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:• 5 credits in reading; and• 5 credits in writing.
• Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above.
Note: Auckland University entrance requires 17 credits in Level 2 or 3 English.

Student Ranking for controlled-entry courses
• A students rank score is based on their best 80 credits at Level 3 or higher over a maximum of five approved subjects.
• The credits are then weighted by awarding points based on the level of achievement• Excellence (4 credits); Merit (3 points); Achieved (2 points); Unit Standard
(2 points).
• Maximum rank score is 320.

International Baccalaureate (IB)
IB Diploma
• Administered by an IB Board of Governors
• Assessment Centre is based in Cardiff, United Kingdom.
• The IB Diploma is a two year qualification (beginning in Year 12) acknowledged by leading universities around the world.
IB Diploma Programme
• Students study six courses:• 3 at higher level (HL); and
• 3 at standard level (SL).
• Students also study three core subjects:• Extended Essay;
• Theory of Knowledge; and
• Creativity, Action and Service
• All subjects, except Creativity, Action and Service are assessed.
IB Assessment
• Assessment is measured against criteria based on the aims and objectives of each subject curriculum.
• Students results are determined by performance against set standards.
• Both internal and external standards are used.
IB Diploma
• Marks are awarded for each course ranging from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest).
• 3 additional points are awarded for the Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.
• The highest total a student can be awarded is 45.
• The diploma requires a student to achieve 24 points. Students must also complete the requirements for the Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Action and Service.
IB University Entrance
• International Baccalaureate Diploma (a minimum of 24 points).
• Rank scores for controlled entry courses still apply, but are based on IB scores.
• More information is displayed on individual University websites.
Note: Auckland University entrance requires a minimum of 26 points.
