Objectives:• Theprojectaimsatdevelopinganewplanningmethodologyabletodeliver,withinfortymonths,afirstversionofcoherentModularDevelopmentPlansofthepan-Europeanpowertransmissionsystem,goingfrom2020to2050
• Theresultingpan-Europeangridissupposedtoenableelectricitymarketintegrationandthe2050decarbonizationgoalsoftheelectricitysystem,thereforeintegratinglargequantitiesofrenewablestobetransportedoverlongdistancesfromproductionsitestoloadcenters
WorkflowThenewlydevelopedtop-down, modular, long-term planning approachfollowsfivemainsteps,withinwhichstakeholdersfromalloverEuropeareinvitedtodiscussassumptions,intermediateandfinalresultsduringexternalworkshopsandconsultations:
1. Thedevelopmentanduseofanapproachtogeneratedifferentlong-termenergy scenarios (generation,exchangesandconsumption),setonthebasisofmacro-economicdata,wheretheenergyadequacybetweengeneration,exchangesandconsumptionisensuredattheEuropeanlevelwhatevertheenergyscenariostudied;
2. Thedevelopmentofscenario quantification,usingtheassumptionsaboutthegenerationmix,exchangesandconsumptionbyarea;
3. Theuseofmarket and power flow simulations toidentifyfeasibleandefficientpan-Europeangridarchitecturesundereachoftheabovechosenenergyscenariosby2050;
4.Averificationthattheselectedreinforcement optionsandnovel network architecture optionsalleviatecriticalissuesfocusingonoverloadproblems,andpossiblevoltageand/orstabilityproblemsforagivenlevelofsystemreliability,whichinturnallowssomeofthesuccessfularchitecturestobecomepartofthefinalmodulardevelopmentplanover2020to2050;
5. Thedevelopmentofimplementation routesfromnowto2050ofthepan-Europeantransmissionsystem,coveringeachofthestudiedscenario,andoptimizedbytakingintoaccountsocialwelfare,environmentalconstraints,aswellasgridoperationsandgovernanceissues.
